Surely Ubuntu is still better than Windows?

I'm a fairly new Linux user (just under a year or so) and I've seen that Ubuntu (my first distro) gets a lot of (undeserved?) flak. I know no distro is perfect (and Ubuntu has it's own baggage) but surely as a community we should still encourage newcomers even if they choose Ubuntu as it still grows the community base and gets them away from Windows? Apologies if I come across as naive, but sometime I think the Linux community is its own worst enemy.

Why is it that USB file transfer speeds just get buffed all the time

So something I have realized is that on linux, all my USB file transfers starts from around 50% done, while on windows they normally start from 0% on the same USB drive and I would like to know if anyone has any idea as to why this is happening (The transfer on linux doesn't take longer to start, I mention this because maybe someone says that the transfer takes longer to start and thats why)

What desktop environment you all use?

I'm curious to know what desktop environment do you guys use and why?
My favorite desktop environment is Cosmic just cuz I like the fact that it feels like you're using hyprland if hyprland had a desktop. I'm a fan of their style of tiling windows:)

Nervous about switching to Linux

Microsoft has officially discontinued updates for Windows 10. Instead of simply upgrading to Windows 11, I am tempted to try switching to a Linux system. I am more than a little nervous. There are so many versions of Linux its hard to tell which one to use.

My long term concern is security, without regular patches from MS I don't know if PC will be safe, and is Linux really any better on that front? In the short term there is also the matter of whether my programs will work on Linux or will I need to reinstall and patch everything.

Any advice for a newbie about to take that first step into the brave new world of Linux OS?

Installer noscript for local static (rootless) versions of popular modern cli tools

I've created a bash noscript to download and install static binaries for a few popular cli tools directly from their respective github releases page to ~/.local/bin .

https://github.com/vvollers/localtoolsinstaller

you just need curl (or wget) essentially to get started.

The goal for me was to be able to quickly install some of these tools for new VMs/servers, where I didn't have root access, but where I wanted to have access to these tools.

I really hope it is useful for someone else as well. Please let me know if you encounter issues.

PS: I'm aware of homebrew, which should be able to do similar things, but the noscript is more lightweight and I can essentially run it as a oneliner anytime I need to install something.

Linux foundation Linux.com email

Hey all,

Been thinking about getting myself a linux.com email from the Linux foundation.

For this, one needs to be an individual supporter ($99) and then buy the linux.com email add-on ($150).

I know that the Linux foundation has some great discounts for their certs on Black Friday, but does anyone know if these discounts also apply to the email add-on?
