My battery life went from 1 hour on windows to almost 5 on linux

This is basically a comical difference, how is this even possible?

I have a very old battery with 50% of its original capacity, is it possible that windows wasn't letting it fully charge because it is old but linux does?
My pc is not warm at all but I am kind of afraid it will blow up now

Stuck between my privacy or my hobbies

I made the switch over to Linux about a year ago on my laptop to Mint. About 6 months ago, I switched distros on my laptop (arch btw), and then I went from windows to CachyOS on my main PC about a week ago. All I can say is that I love it. I play a bunch of video games, and even though I've had to give a bit of gaming up (Apex, R6, GTAO) the switch is still 100% worth it. Apart from one thing.

I'm a music producer who uses FL Studio. When doing my research for the switch, I found that FL actually wasn't too difficult to get running on Linux, so I decided to make the switch. But installing plugins and vsts is a whole new thing.
I haven't been able to figure out how to get a few vsts working, let alone the 20ish I need to make my music. I just can't see linux working for my music production with how much of a headache it's been and I still haven't been able to get all the plugins I need working.

But I fucking hate microsoft. With a passion. I hate where they're taking windows, I hate the fact that they send all my data to who knows where, I hate that all of their software is closed source, everything about that company reeks.

But I literally don't know what to do now. Music is the one thing that keeps me sane. It's my main hobby in life, all of my goals revolve around it, I can't just give it up.

I've tried using VMs but they're so incredibly slow in my experience. Maybe I need to try something that's kernel level, but it does just seem like alot of work and inconvenience for something that I'm not even sure would work, plus I only have 1 GPU.

The idea of dual booting has floated around in my head, but wouldn't that just give microsoft all of my files and data anyway? What is even the point of being privacy focused on Linux if Microsoft read all of that data? Plus I don't want to have to reboot my PC when I go from general use to production and vice versa. I am quite an impulsive person and I switch between tasks often, restarting everytime I do that just seems annoying.

Maybe I've misunderstood something, maybe there's more to it, maybe the kernel level virtual machine would work well with my 1 GPU, maybe dual booting is worth it, I'm not sure. If anyone wants to give me advice then please feel free. I just really don't want to have my machine's main OS be from Microsoft anymore, I'm so sick of that company.

Friend's daughter needing online resources for learning Linux and coding

I'm giving a friend's daughter a laptop loaded with Linux Mint.
Can anyone recommend a reddit sub (or other online forum) that's friendly, kind, and suitable for a high school girl learning Linux and coding? I'm not familiar with this sub, not sure how supportive and moderated it is (no shade intended, just not every place on reddit might be suitable for a highschooler who might be shy or uncertain)

What is the "culture shock" of switching to Linux?

Been debating switching to Linux as I am really tired of Windows and Microsoft, but I am just so undecided as compatibility of a big operating system is obviously comfortable. While I feel like it's easy to read and learn about the differences between using Windows or Linux, I am wondering what real pains and positives are that you have noticed when fully jumping into using Linux exclusively?

Linux Desktop Endpoint Management ideas?

Started a role for a University where they are increasingly wanting more Linux Desktop PCs & need a way to manage them. Nothing in place so far. Ubuntu thank the lord ❤️

First time I’ve ever administered any endpoints, I’ve only ever done servers via Ansible & BigFix. Short term fix is spinning up Ansible and deploying SSH keys to get things updated remotely and enforce security. Maybe using custom facts to poll service tags somehow. Long term solution is I want to get a PoC going for a good MDM solution. Currently we’re using Jamf for Mac and SCCM/Intune for Windows. I was eyeballing JumpCloud but curious what y’all use for your environments??

Also, what would yall use for deploying OS images to new PCs? I was thinking of creating unattended installer files to put in user-data and meta-data directories as others have done and deploy via PXE booting

Looking for testers: LinuxPlay, a fully tunable ultra-low-latency remote desktop

I’ve been working on LinuxPlay for a while now, an open-source remote desktop and game streaming stack built from scratch for Linux.

Everything is configurable, from codec and encoder to bitrate, QP, GOP, tune, preset, and buffers.

It supports multiple monitors, controller input, clipboard sync, and drag-and-drop file upload.

Video, audio, and input all run over UDP, with TCP used only for the initial handshake.

It automatically adjusts between LAN and Wi-Fi, includes heartbeat recovery, a stats overlay, and an ultra mode (LAN only) that can reach sub-frame latency.

Looking for testers to try it, stress it, and share how it performs on your setup or GPU.

Is it advisable to partition a single flash drive into two parts -> One for an OS install and the other to hold a Timeshift snapshot?

I know that eventually I will break the system and will want to do a clean install. I thought it would be convenient to have a single flash drive which I can do a complete clean install off of AND THEN use Timeshift to restore a snapshot that is stored on another part of the flash drive.

It would be easier to just have two separate flash drives, one for the Debian OS install and the other for the timeshift snapshot but wondering if it's possible to just use one flash drive.

Migrating and partitioning

Windows 10 support is coming to an end and frankly I'm sick of the anti user direction of the OS so I've made the desicion to migrate.

My only concern is that I have some software I have paid for/ used my allowance of keys for, like davinci resolve, I'd rather not them purchase again if I can avoid it. How convenient/simple would it be to partition a hard drive to keep Windows 10 just to use it. Or alternatively, would it be smoother to have a seperate hardrive dedicated to these programs?

This may be a simple question but I haven't done something like this before and some guidance would be appreciated. Thanks.
