How is Linux free?

I've been diving into the world of open source, and I'm fascinated by how massive it is. But one thing still feels like a "black box" to me: the economics behind it.

Most distros are free (as in free beer), yet we have giant entities like the Linux Foundation and Red Hat making serious moves. I'm curious about the specific revenue streams that keep this engine running.

Specifically:

- Besides corporate memberships and donations, how does the Linux Foundation justify its massive budget?

- How do individual developers or smaller distros survive without charging for the OS itself? Is it purely "pro-bono," or are there hidden B2B models I'm missing?

- How has the shift to cloud and SaaS changed the way Linux "makes money" compared to the old days of boxed software?

I'd love to hear some nuanced perspectives on how the money flows in a world where the core product is technically $0. Thanks!

Trying to leave Windows on old PC but can't

Hello

My mom had an old Dell Optiplex 755 that is being bogged down by windows 10 and can't even watch YouTube on it.

I tried installing Linux Mint xfce, Zorin OS, Lubuntu but for reason no other OS than windows 10 can find legacy drivers to run the 1366x768 monitor and results in a squished image.

I tried a bunch of commands with custom display resolutions but they don't work and the PC is not usable like that due to distortion.

Are there any specific distros that work with a 2007, old, low end PC with legacy display drivers?

After some mashups on dual boot I am installing windows 10 again but I'm willing to give it another go.

Thanks!

Audio settings

Does any of these apps adjust settings on hardware level: alsamixer, pavucontrol or easy effects? I mean if i change volumes, does it affect dual booted windows volumes? I think that if i leave easy effects enabled and reboot to windows my mic is bugged.

I wrote an ARM64 program that looks like hex gibberish but reveals a Christmas tree in the ASCII column when you memory dump it in LLDB.

Good lightweight distros for an older laptop?

I have an older laptop that I’m mostly going to be using for school/college stuff, but also need to run wine and proton for games and some apps. It has like 8gb ram, a really old intel 4th gen, and no dedicated GPU. I’ve been running debian (gnome) on it for a few years, but I think I want to start over with something more lightweight. These are some that I was looking at:

\- CachyOS: claims to be fast with a custom optimized kernel and good compatibility, might be a good choice

\- Bazzite: More gaming and compatibility focused, seems a bit heavier though.

\- Alpine: I’ve worked with it before and really liked it, though I’m guessing MUSL isn’t going to play well with wine/proton.

\- Void: Apparently minimal like alpine, but uses glibc

\- Arch: I’ve worked with it before, but tbh it isn’t that lightweight and mostly just involves extra steps to get compatibility working.

Also probably need some DE ideas, considering the fact that gnome is very heavy and also was involved in some controversy (though I don’t know much about what happened):

\- KDE Plasma: Don’t know how lightweight it is, but it seems pretty good. Idrc about it looking like windows.

\- Hyprland/other WM: Used to have it with arch, but tbh I didn’t really like them all that much. Also I’m not the only one that uses this laptop (my parents use it from time to time on vacation and such)

\- Xfce: Apparently a good lightweight option.

Can anyone give some suggestions for a good distro/DE combo, or some feedback about the ones I listed here? I’m obviously not running any crazy intensive games, but with Debian + gnome I’m using like 50% of my ram just idling.

Flatpak or not flatpak, thats the question

Guys, Im new at the Pop!_OS and just for curiosity, if I want to download/install a software that contains sensitive data - like: steam, spotify, etc. - its better use the system option (.deb filles) or flatpak option? Wich one is better and safer?

A Linux User’s Approach to Local, Privacy-Respecting Image Editing using Local AI Model

I’ve always wanted a super simple way to remove backgrounds from images, even on my iPhone. But here’s the thing: I’ve never been a fan of random websites or heavy software like Photoshop or GIMP. Not only do I worry about whether the sites are safe, but the process itself just felt like too much work. My usual workflow? Download the image, fire up Gimp on Fedora, resize it, and then painstakingly use the magic tool to remove the background. It’s effective, but let's be real—it's a lot of effort.

Now, don’t get me wrong, I’m all about AI, but I don’t fully trust online tools. I started thinking over the holidays: “There has to be a better way to do this, right? Something effortless?” After some digging, I found rembg—it’s exactly what I was looking for. It uses local AI to remove backgrounds, which is perfect, but there’s one catch: it’s command-line only. That means every time I wanted to use it, I’d have to open up the terminal—and, honestly, I wanted something way more user-friendly. Plus, there’s no website to just access it from my phone.

It sounds a little strange, but around Christmas, I had this idea: What if I could host this myself? Like, why not create a simple, self-hosted web app that I could run on an old linux laptop and access from my phone whenever I wanted to remove a background? So, I decided to build it.

I fired up my Linux setup, grabbed the rembg library, and started coding a Next.js web UI. And guess what? It worked! I now have an easy, privacy-focused way to remove backgrounds locally on my own device—no online tools, no sketchy sites, and no handing over my data. The dream came true.

But I didn’t stop there—I wanted it to be as simple as possible for anyone to use. So, I’m working on making the web interface smoother and adding an export feature to make everything even easier.

Here's where I’d love your thoughts:

I’ve created a tool that solves a problem I’ve been dealing with for ages, and I’m curious if it’s something you’d find useful. Do you also struggle with removing backgrounds from images? Ever wish you could just use AI for it, but locally, without uploading your stuff to random websites?

This project is built for privacy-conscious people like me—and hopefully like you—who care about keeping our data secure. I developed it using a devcontainer and python in Fedora, and I’m seeing more people in the Linux community starting to create privacy-first tools. Anyone else noticing this shift towards more control over our own software?

If you’re interested, you can check out the open-source project: imgcompress on GitHub. From version 0.3.0, it now supports background removal, and best of all—it’s 100% free and privacy-focused using GNU License as many other Linux tools.

So, what do you think? Does the idea of a local, privacy-first background remover sound like something you’d use? Or do you trust online tools more? I’d love to hear your thoughts. Privacy is a huge concern for me, and I built this tool because I don’t want my images floating around on some server. Anyone else feel the same?

PostmarketOS Phones with HDMI Display

I can't find it in their official website but is there a list of the phones where I can display from the type-c of the phone to HDMI then monitor? I want the PostmarketOS to display a screen like in Dex mode. Is this possible in a supported device by PostmarketOS? I can see the laptops and 2-in-1 are supported HDMI out but how about the supported phones?

I built BrewHouse: A native GTK4 GUI for managing Homebrew on Linux

Hey Linux

First thing, I am not a developer. I managed development teams in the past for a large communications firm. This was written by claude, and tested by me.

I've been using Homebrew on my KDE Neon setup and got tired of managing packages via CLI, so I built BrewHouse \- a native GTK4 application for browsing, installing, and managing Homebrew packages. I saw Windows and macOS had GUI's and thought it would be better for managing brew in Linux. Basically, scratched my itch.

I think the searching function is my favorite, as I was always guessing what was available prior to this.

It is simple but effective for me. Written in Rust. Free, MIT license.

https://github.com/threeforksp/brewhouse

I've not addressed any security issues, welcome for input.

Open to suggestions, bug reports, and contributions!
