Aggravated by website that blocks Linux users

This is a rant, so mods delete if it's in the wrong subreddit. I rent a storage space and pay my bill online monthly. Well this month I went to the website and got a 403 page. Huh, misconfigured NGINX server or the bookmarked URL changed.

I went to the front page, nope, go away it said, in black and white. Two days later, same thing. I pulled up the site on my Android phone and, what? The website is displaying fine so I paid my bill. Back to my Ubuntu laptop and 403, with Chrome and Firefox! Ok, sanity check. I change my user agent string on Firefox and the site shows fine!

They are actively blacklisting Linux? Two detailed emails to customer service, no response. Two messages on Facebook and they get my account number and a promise to punt to their IT dept. No response, crickets.

Sorry, I just can't think of a scenario where a commercial website would block a customer who uses Linux! I'm going to write a letter to their HQ. I'm sure their execs wouldn't want to pay for hosting and IT not displaying their site.

Deadline(MQ) scheduler sucks, and I don't understand the hype behind it

My intro to Linux and the kernel was Android 1.0 on the T-mobile G1. I didn't start rooting and ROMing until my next phone a year or two later. I read nonstop about how great deadline is, and have tried it a million times on multiple phones over almost the past 10 years. Every single one, the system is a day and night difference in responsiveness between CFQ and Deadline when under a heavy load. I mean CFQ stomps Deadline during these loads, and when the system is idle, I cannot tell any difference in speed or responsiveness in the system.

Messing with Linux on my laptops since about 2013, I've noticed the exact same thing. I even repeatedly tested large file transfers both writing and reading from the SSD while changing schedulers and tweaking parameters. On Deadline and Deadline MQ, I could only make the system slower no matter what scheduler settings I changed. With CFQ and BFQ (based on CFQ), messing with things like slice idle actually did improve performance while making these large transfers.

TL:DR, Even with an SSD, making large read/write operations, the system crawls to a halt or severe lag when trying to do anything else. When using the system at idle, performance difference is unnoticeable. Every guide about Linux/Android tuning I've found says Deadline is king of performance, but in every comparison I do for user responsiveness, CFQ/BFQ absolutely destroys Deadline. I mean it's a really big difference and I don't understand why so many tuning guides recommend Deadline.

Deadline MQ is so bad that I get Youtube video skipping when doing heavy disk operations. Not only do I not gets those with CFQ/BFQ, but I'm compiling the kernel in a virtual machine and still am not having any slowdowns.

Hi! A friend and I are creating a custom Arch Linux based distribution focused on being primarily cloud-based, having the ability to be run on ARM with minimal changes, and link to our online account service, Auraia Accounts, which we are currently developing. It will run an Openbox-based desktop environment (after A LOT of switching between Budgie and Openbox) with customisations to make it more user-friendly and appealing, and will also have links to the Accounts service. The development may take quite a long to complete but will be a rolling, open beta.

Whilst this may not be of an interest to many people on this community considering the multitude of Linux distributions, we still wanted to get the word out. **If anyone would like to help with the development this would be greatly appreciated.** Thanks!

Meta: petition to ban hypothetical scenarios posts

Hello everyone, I've noticed that sometimes people asks questions here like "with IBM buying Rad Hat what is going to happen to systemd" or "what will happen to Linux with the Huawei ban".

This question are just asking for hypothetical answers, with the usual top answer being a nice elaborated: "nothing".

The reality is probably nothing happen, and if it did, is not like there is much point in discussing some hypothetical scenario that might or might not happen some day in the future. At least, I think, for the purposes of this subreddit. Nobody learns much and it is just a meaningless discussion.

So I would like to ask for such questions to be banned from being posted.

Anyway, usually this questions get lots of answers, so it seems like people like them anyway. What do you think?

MTR Reading ? ELI5

Not sure if this is the right sub for this type of request. Im trying to understand if my server hosting provider with ubuntu has a proper network for me.

Before any one asks , my main concern is upload speed, not download speed.

So i do always love to do a speedtest-cli test. My provider told me that speedtest-cli is only good for "consumer isp" not "business isp".

For some reason every time i do a speedtest-cli on my provider dedicated server this is the result. No matter what i always get a constant 4.18 mbit/s on upload

Access grub from windows 10 without shutting down windows process.

Is there any way to access grub from windows 10? From linux mint there is a keyboard shortcut to access grub without shutting down linux processes and switch to windows "Alt+PrtScr+R+E+S+U+B". I was looking for a similar method to switch to linux from windows without shutting down windows processes? right now the only way to access grub from a windows session is to restart my pc.
