This Data file is on the same drive as my Linux. As you can see, right now it is only readable, but sometimes it is readable/writeable. I can access it only on random days. However, I can always read/write it if I am booting from windows. Any ideas? [Linux Mint]

An open letter to GNOME developers
Hi kind developers.
First of all I want to thank you for your work in improving the Free Software ecosystem, I know you could be given your time to something else.
I know that criticism can be tiresome and exhausting, but I would like to tell you how I feel in the most kind way I can.
I honestly feel uneasy or alienated every time I use GNOME.
Don't get me wrong. It is not that GNOME looks bad, in fact it looks really good. And I have it in my mom's computer. But not mine.
The thing is, I feel like I am not supposed to use GNOME. I don't like the (what I feel are) huge noscript bars, I don't like that you can't hide the top menu bar, and that even when I change a theme I am wrong, all because it is not within the "vision" of what GNOME thinks I should do.
Now, I understand I can try some extensions, but my experience has been less than ideal. Extensions are a second class citizen and if something breaks I am on my own. I don't understand why this "vision" implies that I have to use my computer in a way that frustrates me.
Sometimes people say "use what works for you", there is KDE, and yes KDE is magnificent and it works really good for me.
It makes me sad that I feel I am not supposed to use GNOME. Why does that vision has to be "do what I think or go somewhere else" I don't think should be bad to adapt my computer to me.
I use my computer several hours a day every day. It's the thing I've looked the most in my life. And I am not alone. Millions of GNU/Linux users are the same.
GNOME is a great desktop, born in the GNU project, a project meant to empower the users. And I wish I could feel more empowered and less alienated.

Linux Pictures No Longer Available
For the past year or so I've been enjoying the high quality of the pictures featured on https://linux.pictures, and have been using the photos for various backgrounds and the like.
However, earlier in May the site went down (I thought it could be a short outage/forgetting to renew a domain/etc), but now I'm not sure.
Does anyone know what happened to the site and does anyone have backups/copies of the newer photos?

Random system lockups solution
Sorry if this is off-topic, but I decided to share this because I've spent more than half a year looking for a solution, and this one is hard to debug because nothing ever shows up in the logs.
If you are experiencing random hard lockups in any distro (unrecoverable, not even the [Magic SysRq keys](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magic_SysRq_key) work), in kernel versions post 4.16.1, you should try adding `ahci.mobile_lpm_policy=0` to your boot command-line. See [Red Hat Bugzilla – Bug 1571330](https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1571330) for details.
From the [Fedora Project Wiki](https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Common_F28_bugs#Certain_laptops_.28Lenovo.29_hang_randomly):
>Certain laptops completely freeze at random when using Fedora 28. This is caused by SATA LPM (link power management) being enabled in order to save battery, but apparently some vendors' firmware doesn't work well with it.
In Debian/Ubuntu systems (should be similar in other distros:
1. Edit /etc/default/grub as root (eg. `sudoedit /etc/default/grub`).
2. Add `ahci.mobile_lpm_policy=0` in the line `GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT`, between the quotes.
3. Save it and run `sudo update-grub`.
4. Reboot and test it for a few days.

Pro Photo Editing in Linux
I just stumbled upon the following channel which has a tone of info regarding pro photo editing in Linux.
I am a (wanna be) pro amateur photographer and a linux user, and recently (6-9 months) completely ditched adobe's tools and windows in favour of darktable and krita (I'm a KDE fan). In the channel, the presenter uses Gnome and Gimp, which I guess is another valid combination :)
Disclaimer: I'm in no way affiliated with the above channel or any of its the subjects. I'm just sharing it, because I believe it would be useful to many people.

Kernel 5.1.6 Greg Kroah-Hartman seems a bit urgent for us to upgrade?
I was looking around the web for the latest stable kernel 5.1.6 and stumbled upon this [https://lkml.org/lkml/2019/5/31/617](https://lkml.org/lkml/2019/5/31/617)
He seems extremely urgent , but with no explanation? Anyone know why this is ? I mean I love upgrading my kernels anyway don't get me wrong , but why so urgent ? Sounds like a security issue to me. I would like to hear your opinion about this.

lost new Linux user who made a mistake
All right, I'll try to keep this pretty quick. I'm working towards a career in IT(yeehaw a+ cert) and wanted to fully immerse myself in learning the basics of Linux. So I did a clean install of Cinnamon over my W10 install so I'd have no choice but to try and figure out issues I run into.
It's been going swimmingly for the past couple months, I've been really enjoying it aside from some random freeze ups I haven't been able to figure out. But now I want to go back to windows and cinnamon dual boot.
Here's where the problem arises: I can't get my bios to recognize my W10 USB as a bootable device. It recognized a backtrack bootable USB but it isn't getting the windows one. I also cannot use legacy boot. I have an AMD Huawei matebook d and the bios is very restrictive. I can disable safe boot and tpm but that's all that I can change related to booting. I tried adding a bios password because I guess that sometimes unlocks other bios features, but that didn't work either. I've tried disabling the SSD to see if it would default to the w10 stick with no luck.
I've tried to look into using grub to force boot to the w10 stick, but my knowledge is too lacking for that. Tomorrow I might try installing a virtual copy of windows 10 and making bootable media from there to see if that does it for some reason.
Does anyone have any advice? Was I on to something with grub or might it work from a w10 VM?
Sorry if this is incoherent babble and I appreciate any help!!

Should Linux Mint go?
Post your opinions!
By the way, my opinion is that it needs to go.
A distro called "Cubuntu" should replace it. (Ubuntu featuring the cinnamon desktop).
