How do I find a Linux girlfriend?

Greetings from Belgium! I know this sounds like a troll post but let me approach this topic as seriously as possible. I am a college computer networking student and in my classes I see that it's a very male-dominated field.. sometimes I'll see a Linux user or two, but again, they're all men. I am of the age where I'm at least somewhat interested in looking for someone to love, but I really don't have many other interests besides music, politics, and free software. If there was a girl who loved Linux as much as I did, then I think we'd be on the same page for many things. I'm wondering where I can find said person. Now, I know that many say that you don't find love, love finds you, but can't I just apt install gf? It's getting lonely down here...

Beginner at linux

Hi guys. So I've always been interested in the IT field but have more theoretical knowledge and only fluent when it comes to databases or excel (I just finished high school). But that's pretty much it, I don't have much knowledge when it comes to programming or linux. I'm planning on taking up computer science as a field of study in university, but since i don't have much knowledge when it comes to programming I enrolled for a crash course in programming, linux and ethical hacking. I don't wana be that annoying noob but could someone brief me up on why people use linux, what purpose linux is used for and why is it so popular? And also how does it relate to computer science? I surfed the web but couldn't find a solid answer, so i turned to this forum instead.

Manjaro Linux (KDE) - Kernel 5.1.8-1

Windows 10 (idfk what update)

CPU: Ryzen 7 2700X

Mobo: ASUS PRIME X370-PRO

GPU: Sapphire Vega 56 Pulse

OBS Version: 23.1.0-1 (linux), 23.1.0 (64bit, windows)

Criteria for getting on my test bench:

- 1080p 60hz (duh)

- USB 3.0 minimum or PCIe

- HDMI Passthrough for 0 latency on another monitor

- Under $200

- Has Linux in the search terms and looks like it supports V4L2 at a glance. (Otherwise, UVL is acceptable, but V4L2 wording is preferred.)

This one I just wanted to add for that one person who just wants to see how a $80 "card" functions compared to the rest that have proper Passthrough and other neat features.

I got this card back when I first got my Nintendo Switch in early 2018. And my experience with it was pretty consistent until I switched to Linux.

Things to note in no particular order:

- Crappy sound grounding (very noisy, lots of ticking and sometimes hissing)

- Default software... kinda sucks. But AFAIK, you can't get "Instant Gameview" without it. (I could be wrong, though)

- **NO LINUX SUPPORT WHATSOEVER, EVEN IF YOU TRY TO USE A VM**

- Rather user friendly.

- Good video quality with minimal lag that did me fine for most of BoTW, but started using HDMI Passthrough when I got into Celeste due to the input latency. (HDMI IN - Switch. HDMI OUT - Monitor. Software on for audio, monitor switched to HDMI input for video)

I will be daisychaining the output from the cards to the Elgato to give an exact comparison of how the other card compares in terms of video fidelity.

NOTE: MOST OF THESE TESTS ARE DONE IN WINDOWS DUE TO ME USING THE ELGATO SOFTWARE. HOWEVER, RESULTS APPEARED THE SAME IN LINUX. PLS NO PITCHFORK <3

#Detailed Reviews:

~~Well, this one had a bad start. First, every USB 3.0 port on my motherboard/case did not work! At all!~~

~~It was only until I plugged it into a USB Type A (Yes, A. Not C.) 3.1 port that it started outputting video consistently, and not only after reboots and only for 5 mins. Not sure if that's an issue with the Mobo, but still.~~

Turns out, my [mobo only supports USB 3 *DATA STORAGE* on it's usb 3 ports](https://i.imgur.com/J62zWNA.jpg). I grabbed a new PCIe USB 3.0 card, and it works fine.

After that, I had 0 audio from the card. Nada.

I had to contact the support to get the newest firmware to flash onto the card, which then solved the no-sound issue. You may be wondering "Why, Tony. Why didn't you get photos of how the output was before the update?"

Because screw having no audio! If it can't do audio on its own (even if its crappy), then I see no point in keeping the card around for video (especially since it's not the best quality to begin with).

Additionally, I did the update in Windows 10, as the updater was an EXE and I didn't wanna test my Wine or VM luck, as it had been q

uite low lately.

The audio however, is quite nice! No crackles, no sutters, decent latency.

Video though, is another story. If I had to put it into one word, it would be __JPEG__. It feels like every frame was run through a Windows XP machine (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QEzhxP-pdos)

I think, if I had to guess what the issue is, it's a low bit/color depth. Maybe even a low resolution? Very fine details are smeared, alpha channels don't much exist, etc.

Also, everything is **darker**.

Overall: 6/10. Good audio, shite video if you actually wanna stream or record with it, unstable (freezed up a lot), strips HDCP.

- Plugable Performance NIX

If you wanna waste your money, go here.

Crap video, audio is ok, doesn't strip HDCP, had to plug and unplug several times, etc.

Do not bother.

Overall: 3/10. It works I guess

- Flint 4KP

So what do you get for $140? The best card I tested here, plus some USB C-A dongles.

Video quality is spot on, with no color banding, and decent color representation. Runs at 60fps without noticeably extra crappy compression.

When I got the new PCIe card, the audio did start to get a little crackly, but it's possible that's just an issue with my case/grounding. And when it was plugged into other machines or in the Mobo's USB ports, there was none.

It does strip HDCP, which is +1 point.

Bundled software is *ok,* but does offer a game mode for Windows users.

Using it in OBS is perfectly fine, however.

Overall: 9/10. Great vid, ok audio (could just be me), strips HDCP, USB-C, Line In/Mic In/Line Out 3.5mm jacks. Today's winner.

- Bonus Cheapo

*ditto from NIX, but without passthrough but does strip HDCP*

Overall: 5/10. Cheapest one here, does what it came out to do, supports YUYV.

Is there a sub for discussing Linux/distros/Shell UX

I'm a ux designer turning developer and despite growing up with a dad who used Linux, I only recently starting using it and I love it! But I also would like someplace where people can discuss CLI and Desktop UX paradigms.


Specifically I saw this [article](https://uxdesign.cc/introducing-mercury-os-f4de45a04289) today (not my own blog post, so not trying to do promotion here). In a similar vein I have been personally doing a lot of research on alternative paradigms for CLI and Desktop UX, such as reading some articles about Temple OS and looking into things like Plan9 and xsh {which is a now defunct wiki inspired shell). In addition to customizing and playing with my own Desktop and CLI shells etc.


There are cool subs like unixporn but they're primarily focused on aesthetics, and they're really just taking distros and customizing them. I'm interested in some kind of community more focused on discussing the way that UX is done at the shell level, beyond just aesthetics, whether that's projects that people specifically built or if it's just theoretical stuff.


Maybe call it something like: /r/linuxUX ? Unless something like this already exists?

What's up with SELinux?

SELinux was released almost 20 years ago, and merged into the mainline kernel about 16 years ago. I would have expected that by now, every mainstream Linux distro would come with it working and enabled out of the box. Yet, outside of the RedHat family (RHEL, CentOS, and Fedora) and Android, no distro has it running out of the box, and I don't think that there's much of a roadmap in that direction.

The fact is that most upstream projects don't assume that you're running SELinux, and most distros don't package a decent default, so that the only advice I've seen is "Run it in permissive, when it breaks, fix it, when it stops breaking, change SELinux to enforcing," which is a quite horrible way to set up permissions.

Officially Apart Of The Linux Master Race!

I always used Windows all my life, but Windows 10 is my breaking point. I hated the bloatware and agonizing CPU usage. So I officially switched my PC's operating system to Linux Mint. At first it was hard to get use to, but now I am getting the kick of it and loving the feel of it.

I love the lightweight based UI and the customization. It basically has every program I use on a daily basis. I am currently learning more about the terminal and the file system. I love how it requires less CPU and RAM to run than Windows 10. It has intrigued me to learn more about other Linux distros and Unix operating systems (FreeBSD, OpenBSD, ETC.)

The only pain I have found was installing drivers and connecting to the internet, but other than that experience, It has been a great learning experience. People need to give Linux Mint Cinnamon some more love once in a awhile.
