How do I make a bootable USB drive with Ubuntu with persistent data?

I have an 8GB USB drive and I want a Linux Distro on it. I picked Ubuntu as I feel it is the best one for keeping track of networks and hosting websites. Any tutorials or documentation would be appreciated.

Speech to text

I enjoy writing fiction and my creative process is paper and pen.

I would love to dictate my prose /writing into the computer and have it made into text I can edit.

Anyone have software suggestions?

Linux alternative to Microsofts "Your Phone" app?

Microsofts "Your Phone" app lets you receive and answer messages from an android phone, and receive notifications. The app is planned to let you mirror your android phone to your pc, so that you can act on other notifications than just messages. Is there any linux alternative (preferably foss) with about the same functionality?

How to secure Ubuntu in network?

I know that I can encypt disk and turn off USB ports to make it safer, what about network? I heard about ufw but do I really need that? Iptables won't be enough?

Distros with a nice app store

Ok...here's the background: I run Windows 10 on my desktop. I got an Amazon Echo dot and wanted to run it through my computer speakers in the next room over until I could find some nice speakers with a sub I wanted for it. Windows doesn't let you change the bluetooth ID, but linux does....so I could have my computer advertise itself as computer speakers....then the echo dot would connect to it and send audio to it.

So, I installed virtualbox and it worked fabulously until I found my speakers I wanted. But, rather than delete virtualbox, I decided I wanted to install some linux distros and play with them. I run Mint on my laptop so I didn't want to play with it. I tried Manjaro and they don't really have an app store-like app. I can use synaptic and such, but I prefer something where I get nice denoscriptions, maybe screenshots and reviews...so I can sit and browse.

After Manjaro, I tried Elementary. I couldn't see settings to keep it from looking like OS X (which I don't like). I also tried to install the virtualbox guest additions and it told me make, gcc, etc. weren't installed. Searching for them in the app store didn't find them.

So, other than Mint, Ubuntu and Elementary, what distros come with a nice interface for browsing and installing software packages?

Life outside Adobe

What are the options to run Adobe stuff and/or its alternatives under Linux as of 2019?

I've been using Linux *regularly* since 2017. As for my professional needs: Blender is on its track to become the 3D tool to use. There's a small jungle of very usable office suites and WPS seems fine. Unity 3D supports Linux fine.

The last thing that prevents me from dumping Windows for good is Adobe stuff. Namely Illustrator and Photoshop, as I haven't really tried *kdenlive* yet. Inkscape is still far from it, and GIMP is even farther, seemingly nowhere close to usable for the next two years.

I tried to install Illustrator under Wine, and it's a no go. I downloaded the trials of the Affinity stuff and will still try it on Wine, but truth is what I've been reading around seems less than promising.

Looking to backup my system by imaging it live?

I am running a RPi 3b+ that boots from an SSD in an external enclosure.

I'd like to be able to take a weekly snapshot of this, and save it to an image file that I could burn to another SSD if ever this one failed.

Is this something that can be done?

My first impressions of the Magewell USB Capture 4K Plus

Since Wayland's support for video screen capture is horrible (in my experience anyway) I've been hunting for a better solution. I recently decided that perhaps an external HDMI capture device would do what I was looking for.

After I read "[I tested 4 "Linux-compatible" USB 3.0 HDMI capture cards](https://www.reddit.com/r/linux/comments/c5s5ml/i_tested_4_linuxcompatible_usb_30_hdmi_capture/)", I decided I would try the ClonerAlliance Flint 4KP. Unfortunately, that device completely failed to work in all respects. It would pass through 4K. And it wouldn't capture at all with V4L.

Someone in that post mentioned Magewell, so I looked over their product selection. The [Magewell USB Capture 4K Plus](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0754C5XLW) looked like it would fit the bill. I realized that for USB C 3.1 Gen 1 (aka 5gps), 4P + 60 fps + full color would be a stretch as far as bandwidth was concerned, so I was only looking to get full color with 1080p at 30fps, which was pretty conservative. But, 4K pass-through was an absolute must.

And this little unassuming device delivered. It works flawlessly, though there is a slight delay (about 200-500ms) between the image on my screen and the image captured through the USB port. I didn't get a chance to test it's audio capabilities, but the devices I needed if I wanted to use it show up in PulseAudio and obs, so I have no doubt they'll work.

It also looks like I have enough bandwidth with my setup to capture at 4K with 30fps or reduced color, or maybe both. I may try that out if I use it for making coding tutorial videos. But, all the options show up in V4L and I have no doubt they'll work flawlessly if my motherboard has the necessary USB bandwidth.

The device is advertised as being a 24/7 device. And it doesn't get especially hot when in use, nor does it have any fans. So that seems like it would be the case. It definitely does have air vents though, so I wouldn't put it in a confined space with no airflow.

All in all, this device isn't flashy or fancy. It just works, and does what I don't think any other device on the market does. Few devices vendors put in the attention to detail necessary to make drivers for standard hardware work out of the box with no tweaks. Magewell does, and makes it well worth the price tag.
