Best way to organize configuration files

I generally like to run Linux on many machines, and often need to create VMs as well. I have a lot of conf files (e.g. .vimrc, .bash_aliases) that I've spent years tweaking. Right now I have them all on a Dropbox folder and just source them from the local config files. I feel like there has to be a more efficient way to do this. I've seen some people actually set up a git repo for these files. Any other suggestions?

Failing flash drives

Has anyone else had a large amount of flash drives fail? I have used dd, rufus, [etcher.io](https://etcher.io) and many more but still find that after flashing a few different distros (\~5) the flash drive won't work properly anymore and becomes read only. Is this just the reality of flash storage? If so, what's a good alternative that is portable but can handle being formatted often?

How did you get "good" at linux?

How did you get into linux and when did you become good at understanding it?

I've been learning to use various types of ubuntu-related OS for a few years now, but never really learned any behind the scenes stuff.

The great compatibility switcheroo!

My Windows 10 desktop crashed with an ntfs.sys blue screen.

Before I went rooting through the cables, I tried some software solutions. A Windows Recovery USB would not boot, same crash. A Windows Install USB would not boot, same crash. Hell, even a Hiren's Boot CD would not boot, stuck on a blinking cursor.

However, Ubuntu Live booted. Worked. Read the drives.

After unplugging drives, I found that the culprit was a dead SSD, used for a Temp/Volatile drive. But somehow, it prevented even a Windows Live image from booting.

Ubuntu spat out a couple of lines of errors, then booted as expected.

Not so many years ago, Linux was the OS most susceptible to HW errors. Now it just powers through!

Go Ubuntu!

It's not illegal to post license plate photos is it? Cause it took me 4 days to get this shot from a bus after I noticed it.

So I posted a while ago that I want to make a Ubuntu based distro called “MultiOS” and I didn’t get the best of feedback. If you don’t know what I mean check my post history anyways here is an idea.

Ok so now since I’m using a gnome based system I wanna use gnome directly instead of using a already existing gnome based system like Ubuntu or Debian. So I just wanna use gnome just gnome.
Kinda like how you would with mate.
And I also wanna try adding parts of xcfe to it for extra features.
Along with having wine/winetricks preinstalled so that I can run windows programs natively.
Sounds dumb but I think I could do something with this idea.

Midnight commander unexpectedly deletes files.

It has been known for over 6 years that the Midnight Commander deletes files when moving, even if an error occurs. How can such a package be part of a stable distribution? I've just sent half of my pictures from the last 15 years to Nirvana. I hope the backup is complete ...

Is it worth to contribute to the library (KDE) if I have an interest in fixing a single bug?

Hi all,

1. My OS is Ubuntu 19.04, I found a ridiculous bug in ksane library of KDE: it scans a wrong local area if the (0;0) of preview window is moved from the (0;0) of the image.
2. I have clonned kdebuild-src (HEAD), and suddenly found that it is far not ready to be compiled: its CMAKE files require an old version of Qt5 that does not support features required by the code. And the biggest problem: its kdewebkit library (a dependency of ksane) still uses WebKitWidgets that does not exists in Qt5.
3. I tried to update KDE for the latest Qt5, but it seems faaaar much harder than fixing the initial problem (ksane).

So, now I am about to fix the bug for the exact version of ksane installed in my system, but:

1. Is it worth to make a pull request (KDE team receives only 'diffs' anyway)? I am not sure if they will include it into any release of KDE (HEAD, patches for versions, etc). And I am aware that any update of my sysetm will bring me KDE libraries with the same problem again.
2. Is it common that sources downloaded from repos cannot be really compiled? I found such problems in HEAD of KDE (its CMAKE files requires Qt5 of wrong version). I wonder if I will get the same problems with a branch required for fixing my local KDE.

Sorry for a long and dizzy text, I could not make it better because of my brain that is almost exploded (I am newby to Git/Linux/CMAKE/KDE/Qt5).

Thanks!
