Discussion: the future of the operating system

It is well known that the architecture that GNU/Linux is built on is robust but old and especially POSIX feels outdated. also, some new operating systems (fuchsia, redox, haiku) are slowly emerging. there are few old but interesting OSes as well ( eg: Plan9, hurd ).

Now, what new inventions / breakthroughs / gradual upgrades do you expect in OS space? ( server / desktop / embedded etc.. ).. What features / techniques from existing research is interesting in this regard? I would like to hear a bit more about OS research....

Bios flashback on linux?

I am planning on getting a 3600 in the next few weeks and i have the choice of m450, x470 or x570 mobo. The first two options would need a bios flashback and while i have an old xp system, the usb ports don’t recognise a thing and a lot of time spent on trying to fix this has yielded no results. Is a bios flashback from linux possible?

Distinguish Linux kernel from android

Hello, sorry to ask here but I need more people.

I want to make (100%) sure if it is Linux kernel or android, of an embeded device (If you think that android is linux, please dont join this post).

The kernel version seems to be 3.18.20, boot loader is little kernel , the device is a 4g modem(quectel ec21). The boot partition (MTD8) is unmounted, but I have the file from an update (used android too to extract) and the kernel size is 5M.

I have access to the console.

I analyzed the kernel symbols.

If I did it correctly I can say that of the android only code (from [here](https://elinux.org/Android_Kernel_Features)) :

THERE IS NOT: binder, ashmem, pmem, logger, lowmem, paranoid network, ram console.

THERE IS: wakelocks, timed outputs/gpio, usb gadget(adb).
