Does megapixel really matter?

I noticed that mostly of China made smartphones has this absurd amount of megapixels (42, and up megapixels).

Though afaik mega pixel/resoultion only matters if:

If you crop your images a lot/crop large portions.

Privacy. Android has often told me so and so app recently used my camera. Even when that app isnt currently open and hasnt been open in the background. Sure they could still use the rear camera, but to me that's less of a privacy issue.

Also, the general des...
