Why I finally switched from Android to iPhone after 10 years

Sorry for the long post. Can't add TL;DR because I cant summarize it.

First of all, I’m a big Google fan and still am. I have been using Android since the Nexus One days in 2010 and have only been using Nexus/Google play edition/Pixel phones. IMO, Pixel is the only true Android phone, everything else is just junk. So, you can see although Android is diverse, I have only one option. It’s either Pixel or iPhone. Though I’d switch to iOS I’d still use some of Google's services because they are th...

Back in the Box

After many years in the fruit microsystem, I switched to Android about a year ago. My first phone was a Note 10+ and I was amazed at Android's functionality. The quality of the phone only added to it.

Last month, a friend gave me his Pixel 4a 5G. I tried it for a week and decided to put my carrier-financed Note back in its box. Pure android is streamlined, uncluttered, and the size of the 4a 5G is just right. I wish it was water resistant and have wireless charging like the 5, but I love this ...

With Samsung recently trying to solve under-display camera performance using deep learning, at what point of computational photography is it acceptable between a natural shot and an artificially restored version of the scene?

Link to some Samsung work slated to be presented particularly "Under display camera Quad Bayer raw image restoration using deep learning"
(Tweet linking the work to Samsung)

This tech may or may not make it out to consumer phones but I'm interested in seeing what people think about the level of computational photography their phones use t...

Is rooting still worth the effort, in 2021?

I started rooting my phones 7 years ago, installed CyanogenMod, doing all kinds of crazy stuff on Galaxy Note 2, and others. With many features being integrated into stock Android itself, is it still worth it in 2021?...

Snapdragon 888 Failed? Another Exynos? Disappointing Gaming Performance/Power Tests from Xiaomi MI11

So we have our first Snapdragon 888 Preview through the Xiaomi MI11. It's important to keep in mind that these are early benchmarks, and you need to take these with a grain of salt. Maybe other phones have better cooling or a firmware update can help.

The performance is comparable to an Apple A13 in Geekbench, but the power consumption is up over the Snapdragon 865. In some areas, performance per watt has actually regressed.

Keep in mind too that longer periods of high temperatures means g...

Battery Health?

Why isn't there more of a push for an android battery health monitor like iOS has? Is it too hardware specific to execute well? This is most important for phone resale. A third party app lacks the day 1 battery life baseline analysis and prevents a clear community standard for comparison. Seems like an important part of the android OS that is missing to me....

One of of the most most minor and yet handy tips: When you say "Hey Google," you don't actually have to wait for the beep to start your Google Assistant command.

I got that tip from here a long time ago, I think, and just wanted to pass it on. Hat tip to whoever first noticed this!...
