There are a number of causes for the so-called "black screen of death" which run the gambit from a bad digitizer to a faulty auto screen brightness sensor. Android auto dark theme option shouldn't require location services enabled

Let's take Nova launcher as an example of how to automatically manage dark theme. Nova launcher allows you to switch to a dark theme based on sunrise and sunset without needing location permission. It just uses your phone's timezone.
