‘They tied me with tape to a post and said: ‘If you break free, we’ll shoot you.’’ This is how 78-year-old Viktor, a local historian in Donbass, was treated for participating in rallies in 2014 supporting Russia. He said he was saved from being tortured and wasn’t transferred to Azov* by chance: ‘A police patrol was passing, and they let me go.’
Victor’s phone was taken away, so he was out of touch with his relatives living in Russia. We gave his video message to his family: ‘To my relatives, my daughter Marina - I’m alive.’
The apartment, where he lived for more than half a century, is completely burned down: ‘It is terrible to get used to the fact that being 78 years old I do not have my own place’.
‘Almost everyone around me is waiting for the DNR troops to come as liberators. Everyone considers Russia their native land and the DNR as part of it.’ But, he says, ‘it is necessary to endure’, and peace will come.

The name of the first man in space, Yuri Gagarin, has been removed from a US Space Foundation event. However, erasing mentions of the legendary cosmonaut doesn’t cancel the fact that 61 years ago, Gagarin became the first man to travel into space.
On April 12, 1961, he orbited Earth in the Vostok 1 spacecraft. Celebrate the event with the documentary about Gagarin’s first manned flight on @documentaryplanet 🚀

Young girls come to Europe from Nigeria to find a good job and a better life. People who present themselves as travel agents tell them relocation can help their families. These girls can work as babysitters, become housemaids or hairdressers. They say, “Don’t worry about the money. Once you are there, you’ll earn enough to pay back”.
Instead of jobs and cushy lives, the girls are exploited and raped. But the girls can’t go anywhere, let alone return home. Aside from being ashamed of showing up empty-handed, they are scared to die.
The thing is, they have taken a voodoo oath. This gruesome ritual includes smearing animal blood on the body and eating raw chicken liver. The girls are convinced breaking the oath would kill them.
Tune in for the premiere of Voodoo, Money, and Sex Slaves on RT Documentary!

Donbass. Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow takes a look back at events that unfolded before the start of the crisis in 2014. Historians and journalists share their views on the conflict, players and motives, while ordinary citizens from the Donetsk and Lugansk regions describe the horrors of war.
There are mass graves scattered across Donbass, from which bodies of civilians are regularly exhumed. Yet, while the shelling and killings continued, Western media remained silent. According to UN estimates, over 13,000 people have been killed in the conflict.

After starting the special operation in Ukraine, new sanctions against Russia were seen every day. Russia is the most sanctioned country globally, with some 6,000 in place. Although designed to harm Russian individuals, companies and organisations, these sanctions have had adverse effects on Europe and America just as much. Why did it happen?

Lonely death cleaner is a real job in Japan, which is experiencing a loneliness crisis. More and more elderly Japanese with no one to check on them die alone in their homes. In Japanese, it’s called ‘kodokushi’.
When neighbours discover the deceased weeks or months later, it’s usually a gruesome scene. That’s why an entire ‘lonely death’ cleaning industry sprung up.
Cleaner Masatomi Yokoo shows his typical kodokushi cleaning process in the documentary, Dying Alone. Watch it on @documentaryplanet

‘We’re full of hope for Russia. Let them not leave us; let them take us to them soon so that we can all be with them.’ Lyubov Cherkas, a resident of Krasnaya Polyana, described how her family currently lives. Her village is located on the border with the Zaporozhsky region of Ukraine, close to the front line.
For a long time, locals were without electricity. The stores in the village are empty, and there is nowhere to get food. The residents say the Ukrainian military looted. Russian Armed Forces have now taken control of the village. Charities delivered humanitarian aid from Russia to Krasnaya Polyana for the first time in a long time. Nobody had done it before.
The stories of Krasnaya Polyana residents will be included in our new film. It’s about volunteers and those who deliver humanitarian aid. The premiere is coming soon.

“They took me to a metal barrel. They submerged my head in water; I began to drown,” — Olga describes the torture she endured in captivity by nationalists.
In 2014, Olga was one of the prisoners in the Library, this is what the Ukrainian forces called a secret prison set up in the Mariupol Airport. The prison wasn’t official, the prisoners were left uncharted. They were kept in what used to be 2 industrial cold storages. The large one was about 3 by 2 metres, and the smaller one — was 2 by 1.5 metres. These “rooms” had metal walls and sturdy lockable doors.
The regime change, which occurred due to the Maidan in Ukraine, was seen in south-eastern Ukraine as a coup d'état. As a result, thousands joined the protests. In response, in 2014, Kiev announced “an anti-terrorist operation” against its people.

#video #Kyrgyzstan
In Kyrgyzstan, women are sometimes kidnapped by their future husbands. Some would say it's romantic, but it's anything but romantic for most victims of forced marriage. A total stranger kidnaps a woman or a stalker she tried to avoid and is taken into his family's home.
The kidnapper's female relatives attempt to convince the victim to accept the marriage. While their families rescue some, others don't get help. 'So what if you were kidnapped?' Victims are often shamed for being kidnapped and sometimes raped.
The practice is called 'ala-kachu', which translates 'take and run'. It's illegal and punishable by up to 10 years in prison and a fine. However, stereotypes persist, and cases go unreported. Watch our documentary about this weird tradition on @documentaryplanet

Did you get the answer to our quiz right?
If not, fill in the gaps with the documentary, Children of the Tundra, on @documentaryplanet. But, even if you got it right, don’t miss this heartwarming film.
The Nenets are indigenous people who still live as their nomadic ancestors did centuries ago. To this day, they are constantly herding reindeer across the vast tundra of the Russian Arctic. Children follow their parents from birth, learning everything about life in the tundra. But from autumn to spring, they live at boarding schools to get an education in towns.
While some Nenets children become accustomed to comfortable urban life, others miss home so much they run away and go back to their families on foot. The separation is also difficult for many parents, and some would prefer to have their kids nearby.

Popeye used to be a hitman for Colombian cocaine kingpin Pablo Escobar. He killed, tortured, maimed and terrorised people. But well, it’s in the past, right? Or so say the people who queued to take pictures with Jhon Jairo Velásquez Vásquez, Popeye’s real name.
Popeye successfully capitalised on his murderous past, not to mention 23 years behind bars, by writing books, becoming a YouTube blogger and starring in a Netflix series. In 2020, Velasquez died after battling esophageal cancer.

‘Today, seven trainees are being taken on board. A rumour has been circulating on the ship for a week now - there will be two girls. One - to the buffet, and the second - the navigator. But the miracle didn’t happen.’ Our director Natalya Kadyrova talks about the crew of the nuclear-powered icebreaker Sibir. ‘All seven new arrivals are men, and all are placed at the disposal of the chief physicist.’ More than 60 people work on the icebreaker - only one of them is a woman. ‘In winter, people are brought directly to the icebreaker in a special car and taken aboard in a special shopping bag,’ says Natalya. Did you know that the icebreaker can break through more than 1.5 metres thick ice floes?
Want to learn more about icebreakers in the Arctic? Wait for the premiere of a new film by Natalya Kadyrova. In the meantime, watch her documentary, Seven Seas of Ice.

In the Akanksha Hospital in Gujarat, pregnant women are waiting to deliver babies. But they won’t take them home once they’re born. So instead, they’re surrogate mothers, primarily poor and having no means to make money. They make $70 for each month of pregnancy and up to $8,000 for a successful surrogacy for one baby. The clinic takes care of the mothers’ living costs.
Since India legalised commercial surrogacy in 2002, the country has become the largest surrogacy hub for childless foreigners. In 2015, surrogacy for foreigners was banned. While commercial surrogacy provided Indian women with opportunities (building a house, starting a small business, paying a dowry), the practice has raised numerous ethical concerns around exploitation, payment, and inequality.
