Meet the gold miners of Paracale - a ‘Goldtown’ in the Philippines.
Every day, these men risk being buried alive as they dive into mud-filled pits without special safety equipment. ‘If a rockfall happens, no one would be able to save us,’ says one of the divers.
Those who work on the surface are putting their health at risk, too. The gold is purified with mercury, which releases toxic fumes. Consequently, workers often suffer from skin and respiratory diseases.
Many see mining in illegal quarries as the only way to make a living. The city can hardly offer other jobs, so employers can always find someone to do this work, despite the deadly danger. Do Filipinos try to change the situation? You’ll find the answers in our film, 'Golden Gamble' (2017).
