When the ship landed near an Indonesian village, many of its occupants couldn’t even walk to the shelter due to exhaustion. Indonesia’s migration service is now looking into where they came from. The most likely place is a huge refugee camp in Bangladesh where tens of thousands of Rohingya Muslims live. Most of them arrived there in 2017 after fleeing from Myanmar, where Rohingya were raped and burned alive in an act of genocide.
Why won’t the refugees return to their homeland? Find out in our film Rohingya: Unpeopled (2018).

🤿 Some merry divers donned fairy-tale costumes and secured an artificial Christmas tree to the bottom of Lake Baikal. Then they danced around it at a depth of 8 metres.
Some of the divers even took off their oxygen tubes to have a sip of non-alcoholic champagne.
Freedivers don’t need snorkels to dive deep. They just hold their breath and dive dozens of metres down. Sometimes they even dive beneath the ice. Why do they do it? Watch Freeze Divers (2019) to find out.

‘It seemed an attempt to make some Muslims think that they were special and should live here without Serbs’. Elena Guskova, director of the Centre for the Study of the Contemporary Balkan Crisis at the Institute of Slavic Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences, explains how, just half a century after World War II, people were again killed due to their nationality in the centre of Europe.

🪵Wood vouchers to appear in France
Many in this country cannot afford wood to heat their homes. Ouest-France, a French newspaper, reports that 2.6 million families may need help. The vouchers will be issued in denominations of 50 to 200 euro.
The anti-Russian sanctions have made it expensive to heat homes with gas not only in France but also in other countries of the Old World. Residents warm themselves the old-fashioned way, with firewood. Watch the film Ice Station Europe (2022) to learn more about it.

‘We don’t hate Wham!, but we hate this song. It is because it is being played 5,000 times per day.’
Tomas and Hannah Mazetti from Sweden dislike ‘Last Christmas’ so much they’ve even launched a fundraiser to buy the song rights so they can take it off the air forever, Daily Mail reports.
Hannah said she started to hate the song when she was 20. Back then, the girl worked in a café and during Christmas weekend, her boss played the song too often. According to the woman, in one day it was played 111 times in a row.
The family has already raised more than $62,000 with the help of more than 320 people who donated money. Still, the Mazettis need much more as the rights are valued at between $15m and $25m. The couple said that in the event they succeed, they will dump the master recording in a Finnish nuclear waste site ‘where it’ll rest for at least two million years.’

🐆Terrifying footage shows an angry leopard attacking a car. It happened in the Indian city of Jorhat. Before rushing at the car, the wild animal managed to injure 15 people, including children. Now all the victims are out of danger, said a divisional forest officer.
Presumably, the leopard escaped from the sanctuary in search of food, according to local authorities. In their opinion, the predator could have been provoked by someone or something. This is not the first case of such a rampage. In November, another leopard attacked a motorcyclist.
Experts believe that the attacks are due to the fact that the locals are building houses right in the woods. For the same reason, elephants attack people. According to the Union Environment Minister, in the battle for resources over the past three years, 1,578 people have died as a result of animal attacks.
In Africa, people have also invaded the animal world. In that continent, poachers kill up to 100 of elephants every day for the tusks and meat. How can the situation change? Watch our film When an Elephant Smiles (2019).

🧊These picturesque photos feature the frozen waters of Niagara Falls at the border of New York state and Ontario, Canada. The water turned into mountains of ice during powerful Storm Elliott.
3,160 tons of water flows over it at a speed of 32 feet per second, Niagara Falls New York State Park reports. While ice forms in and around the Falls every year, it froze completely just once in history. In 1848 the river ceased to flow for 30 hours.
Though Storm Elliot provided stunning views, it also produced frigid temperatures and a deadly blizzard in New York. It has already taken the lives of more than 60 people across eight states, left thousands without power for days and provoked mass looting. Still, the storm keeps going.

🎁 A holiday for every slum. Members of Mexico’s biggest drug cartel handed out gifts to the poor.
The video shows hundreds of residents receiving smartphones, appliances, trainers and other items. The gifts were delivered in pick-up trucks decorated with inflatable Santa Clauses, snowmen and reindeer.
Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador urges against taking such presents. He believes that through such methods the gangsters gain the trust of ordinary people. But how do citizens really feel about the drug dealers? Watch Narco-Song of Sinaloa (2017) to find out.

There are only 16 residents left in Pena Zafra de Abajo, Spain. For decades they struggled with a constant exodus of people seeking jobs and opportunities outside the village, but nothing worked. So, to draw attention to the problem, they came up with an unusual solution - they made a nude calendar. Even the oldest resident, Pedro Sanchez, aged 100, stripped off. How do you find the photos?
Villagers have sold almost 400 calendar copies, and have already begun planning 2024’s version.
Rural depopulation threatens more than half of Spain’s territory. Young people prefer to move to the cities. Over the past 50 years the state’s countryside has lost 28% of its population, VOA News reports.
Do you think Pena Zafra de Abajo villagers will manage to change the situation?
