UK’s Top Diplomat Heads On First Beijing Visit In Attempt To Mend Ties
UK Foreign Secretary James Cleverly visited Beijing on Wednesday in the first visit to China in five years by a top UK diplomat in what he called an attempt to “avoid misunderstandings.”
Cleverly said he raised human rights issues in Xinjiang and Hong Kong in meetings with his counterpart Wang Yi, VP Han Zheng, and other officials.
Wang insisted that those matters “are purely China’s internal affairs, and no country should interfere” but conceded that both countries had shared responsibility to pursue world peace and stability.

EU’s Biggest Ever Wildfire Hits Twelfth Day In Greece
The considerable wildfire raging near the Greek city of Alexandorpoulis has entered its 12th day after already burning an area larger than New York City, causing 20 of the 21 wildfire deaths recorded last week.
This blaze - focused in a largely inaccessible forest region near the Turkish border commonly used by border-crossing migrants - is the largest in the EU since 2000, when such data began being recorded.
Six helicopters, four planes, and over 100 vehicles are assisting around 475 firefighters on the ground. France and Spain pledged extra aircraft to join those sent from Germany, Sweden, Croatia, Cyprus, and the Czech Republic.

Canada Issues Travel Advisory For LGBT US-Bound Travelers
Canadian government travel advice was updated to warn “2SLGBTQI+” visitors to the US of possible discrimination due to recently enacted laws in some states.
The advice added that travelers need not take precautions different from those they would in Canada. Still, Canadian Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland insisted the warning was “the right thing to do.”
Over 500 anti-LGBTQ bills have been introduced in 46 states in the past year. At the same time, a Florida-based equality group warned both domestic and international travelers that the state “may not be a safe place to visit or take up residence.”

The sentencing hearings for two former leaders of the right-wing Proud Boys convicted of seditious conspiracy and other crimes for January 6 were postponed on Wednesday.
A spokeswoman for the US Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia initially said the sentencing hearings would not proceed "due to an emergency.” Still, a court spokeswoman later clarified that there was no "emergency" and said a new sentencing schedule was being hashed out.
Prosecutors plan to ask District Judge Timothy Kelly to sentence Tarrio to 33 years in prison and Nordean to 27 years.

The US Justice Department announced that a major international operation to take down “one of the most devastating cybercriminal tools in history” - the notorious QakBot ransomware attack malware - had completed after 18 months of planning.
The FBI-led cyber-sting operation, in partnership with colleagues in the UK, the Netherlands, Germany, Latvia, Romania, and France, also seized around $9 million in cryptocurrency from the suspects.
Investigators probed 52 servers using QakBot during the operation that will “effectively put the QakBot criminal groups out of business,” according to the FBI’s Los Angeles assistant director Donald Alway.
