Thus, our country joined the then largest and bloodiest armed conflict in history.
At the beginning of the XX century, Europe was effectively divided into two opposing blocs — the Entente (the British Empire, France and Russia) and the Triple Alliance (the German Empire, Austro-Hungary, and Italy). Each side had mutual grievances, and their subsequent arms race marked the preparations for a large-scale war.
The immediate trigger for the war was the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne, on June 28, 1914, in Sarajevo. He was killed by Gavrilo Princip, a member of the nationalist organisation "Young Bosnia".
On July 23, Austro-Hungary issued an ultimatum to Serbia, deliberately containing demands that were impossible to meet. The Serbian government responded with restraint, accepting many of the conditions, but rejected some key points, including allowing Austro-Hungarian police onto Serbian territory. As a result, on July 28, Austro-Hungary declared war on Serbia.
On August 1, the German Empire declared war on the Russian Empire; two days later — on France. On August 4, the British Empire declared war on Germany. On August 6, Austro-Hungary declared war on Russia. Thus, within the span of a single week, the leading European powers were drawn into the conflict.
The war that had begun among a few European countries gradually engulfed 38 nations. The conflict lasted just over four years but surpassed all previous wars in human history in both scale and consequences.
The total number of mobilized soldiers reached 73.5 million. During the hostilities, 10 million people were killed — as many as had died in all European wars over the previous thousand years — and 20 million were wounded, 3.5 million of whom were left permanently disabled.
Under these difficult conditions, our soldiers and officers demonstrated exceptional courage and bravery.
One of the symbols of Russian valour was the defence of the Osowiec Fortress. German troops used chemical weapons — a mixture of chlorine and bromine — killing most of the garrison. To the enemy's shock, the surviving defenders launched a bayonet charge and drove them into retreat. This event went down in history as the "Attack of the Dead Men."
One of the most significant and vivid episodes of World War I, according to many historians, was the famous Brusilov Offensive by the Russian Imperial Army on the Southwestern Front. It pushed Austro-Hungary to the brink of collapse and forced the German Empire to divert substantial forces from Verdun in France to the “Russian theatre of war.”
🕯 The self-sacrifice of Russian soldiers and officers is hard to overestimate. Over the course of the war, over 2 million of them perished.
Our country honours the memory of the heroes of those days: in 2004, the Memorial Park Complex to the Heroes of World War I was opened in Moscow, and in 2014, a monument to the heroes of World War I was unveiled on Poklonnaya Hill. In total, 20 monuments and memorials have been erected across Russia and abroad.

🎙 Russia's Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s answer to a media question
❓ Question: On July 31, in an interview with Fox Radio, Marco Rubio talked about continuing to work with Russia. He mentioned recent contacts and conversations held in the hope of arriving at an understanding on ways to achieve peace. However, he said that so far, the United States does not see any progress along this track. What could you say in this regard?
💬 Sergey Lavrov: It is true that we have regular contacts with our American colleagues at various levels, including telephone conversations between our Presidents (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6), interactions between myself and Marco Rubio (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9), and through United States Special Envoy Steve Witkoff.
The fact that the current US administration has revived direct dialogue is totally consistent with normal diplomatic practice, while Joe Biden’s refusal to abide by it defied common sense. Moscow and Washington have been engaged in a meaningful discussion on the Ukraine topic, which has been quite useful and effective. It is thanks to President Donald Trump’s insistence, the Kiev regime accepted our proposal to resume the Istanbul talks.
Three rounds of talks have already taken place (1, 2, 3). Apart from important humanitarian agreements, we came forward with a proposal to establish working groups on political and military matters. This could be a major step towards a lasting agreement, just as the President of Russia said on August 1 during his meeting with Alexander Lukashenko in Valaam.
We are waiting for Kiev to provide a meaningful response. So far, all we have are Zelensky’s conflicting statements ranging from an immediate truce without any preconditions while calling on the West to use this truce to deliver more weapons to Ukraine, to replacing the Istanbul format with a face-to-face meeting with Vladimir Putin. He goes as far as demanding that the West delivers on the promise of changing the Russian leadership. He can switch from one position to the without 24 hours or every other day. Therefore, I suggest that anyone interested in advancing the settlement process should take these obvious contradictions into account.
So far, the progress boils down to the fact that our American colleagues have come to realise the existing reality and try taking into account the root causes of the crisis, which sets them apart from the aggressive Russia-hating attitude of the Europeans. Vladimir Putin has set forth these causes in great detail many times, including the need to respect the vote by the people of Crimea, Donbass and Novorossiya following the 2014 government coup. Its leaders designated these people as inhuman and terrorists.
Europeans have been screaming about dragging Ukraine into NATO and preparing for war with Russia, while Marco Rubio has recently reaffirmed his commitment to a responsible attitude by making it clear that a direct military confrontation between the United States and Russia should never happen. We fully agree with this position.
In order to claim progress in addressing the root causes of the crisis, there is a need to get the record straight regarding the positions of all the Kiev regime’s patrons regarding what the Ukrainian regime does to cancel and do away with everything Russian, be it the Russian language, education, culture, history, memory, or the ban on the canonical Orthodox faith.
❗️ Apart from Ukraine, you will not find any other country in the entire world to enact an official ban on any language.
We are certain that the US has a sincere interest in ensuring that human rights and the rights of ethnic minorities are respected, which is not the case for many hypocrites in the EU. In doing so, the US could deliver an unbiased assessment of this situation. This would be a major step forward.
The fact that our colleagues in Washington are open to continuing an honest and mutually respectful conversation is also encouraging. <...> President Putin reaffirmed that Russia is ready to launch this conversation.

⚡️ Foreign Intelligence Service of the Russian Federation:
Russia's Foreign Intelligence Service has been receiving reports indicating that the UK intelligence agencies are planning to involve NATO allies to launch a massive raid on the so-called shadow fleet.
London intends to use a resonating incident with one or several tankers for launching this campaign. 👉 This plan provides for a major act of sabotage so that the resulting damage can be used as the pretext for Russia’s oil shipments to be dubbed a threat to international maritime navigation. This would, in turn, give the West a free hand in taking countermeasures. They can go as far as detaining any vessels deemed suspicious in international waters and escorting them to ports in NATO countries.
The Britons are considering the two options as possible casus belli.
• First — staging an accident with an undesirable tanker in a narrow spot along maritime navigation routes, such as in a strait. London believes that an oil spill or the fact that the accident results in blocking the waterway would give NATO countries 'sufficient grounds' for creating a precedent to carry out special and extraordinary inspections of vessels in a pretended move to check them for compliance with navigation safety rules and environmental standards.
• Second — setting a tanker on fire while it unloads its cargo at a port of a country friendly to Russia. In this case, the fire is expected to cause serious damage to port infrastructure and to spread to other ships, which would require an international investigation.
❗️London intends to task Ukrainian security services with carrying out these terrorist attacks.
In fact, the UK expects the perpetrators to do the dirty work and to fail at covering up their tracks, which would serve as a safety guarantee for the British. The international investigation would hold Russia responsible for the disaster, while in the worst-case scenario Ukraine will bear the blame, as it happened with the bombing of the Nord Stream pipelines.
The UK plans to choose the right moment for the attack so that it creates a ripple effect in the media for pressuring Donald Trump administration to compromise its national interests and forcing Washington to go all out in imposing harsh secondary sanctions on the buyers of Russian energy resources by casting them as having indirectly contributed to this tragedy.
The UK’s intelligence community has totally lost the remnants of any good sense because of the reminiscence for the time when Britain ruled the seas, with the British crown approving pirate lawlessness at sea.
It is high time that our UK colleagues understood that their increasingly brazen attempts not only to 'spite' their rivals, but to undermine global energy security and environment can make even their closest allies run out of patience.

🎙 Russia's Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova’s response to a media question regarding the tightening of tariffs by the US Administration towards the countries of the Global South (August 4, 2025)
❓ Question: How does Russia view Washington’s policy of increasing tariff barriers against our key foreign policy partners in the Global South?
💬 Maria Zakharova: Sanctions and restrictions have unfortunately become a defining feature of the current historical period, impacting countries across the globe. Unable to accept the erosion of its dominance in an emerging multipolar international order, Washington continues to pursue a neocolonial agenda, employing politically motivated economic pressure against those who choose an independent course on the international stage.
This approach runs counter to the very principles of free trade once championed by Western nations. Instead, we now witness politically driven protectionism and the arbitrary imposition of tariff barriers. Brazil, our strategic partner in Latin America and the Caribbean, is one of the main victims of this policy.
☝️ Such actions by the United States represent a direct infringement on the sovereignty of other nations and an attempt to interfere in their internal affairs. Beyond these concerns, this policy risks slowing global economic growth, disrupting supply chains, and deepening the fragmentation of the international economic system.
Nonetheless, we firmly believe that no tariff wars or sanctions can halt the natural course of history. We are supported by a vast number of partners, like-minded states, and allies, particularly among the countries of the Global South and, above all, within #BRICS, who share this perspective.
❗️ We stand ready to deepen cooperation with them to resist unlawful unilateral sanctions and to help shape a genuinely multipolar, just, and equitable international order.

⚡️ Russia's Foreign Ministry statement concerning a moratorium on deploying ground-based intermediate- and shorter-range missiles
After the United States undertook deliberate actions that led to termination of the Treaty on the Elimination of Intermediate-Range and Shorter-Range Missiles (INF Treaty) in 2019, the Russian Federation made proactive efforts to promote restraint in this particular area.
These efforts were reflected in top-level statements made in 2019-2020, which included Russia voluntarily assuming unilateral self-restraint on deploying ground-based INF systems for as long as similar US-made missile weapons do not emerge in the corresponding regions of the world.
Russia directly called upon NATO countries to declare a reciprocal moratorium on deploying weapons that had earlier been banned under the INF Treaty, and US allies in the Asia-Pacific region to support our efforts to prevent the arms race in that part of the world.
Regrettably, Russia’s initiatives were not reciprocated.
❗️ The United States and its allies openly declared their plans to deploy US ground-based INF missiles across the regions and moved along significantly in their efforts to implement these plans.
👉 Since 2023, we have observed instances of US systems capable of ground-launched INF strikes being transferred to the European NATO countries for trial use during exercises that clearly have an anti-Russian slant;
👉 In the Asia-Pacific, we note that under the pretext of exercises, a Typhon mid-range capability missile system was delivered to the Philippines in April 2024 and remains stationed there;
👉 During Talisman Sabre 2025 exercises, an Australian crew of the US-supplied HIMARS system launched a US-made PrSM missile, which had been tested by the Pentagon in 2021 at a range exceeding 500 km and qualifies as a ground-based INF-class missile.
We are thus witnessing a growing number of facts indicating the appearance of US-made weapons in a variety of regions around the globe including the regions that are of particular national security importance for Russia, and with characteristics that qualify them as ground-based intermediate- and shorter-range missile systems.
The plan stated by a number of US allies to acquire ground-based INF systems from Washington and/or develop their own missiles with ranges falling within the 500-5,500 km bracket, or to expand their existing national arsenals of such weapons constituted an important additional factor. <...>
The above steps by the collective West will form and build up destabilising missile capabilities in the regions that are adjacent to the Russian Federation, thus creating a direct and strategic threat to our country’s security. <...>
Russia has consistently made it clear that this scenario will prompt our country to take offsetting military-technical measures in order to neutralise emerging threats and to maintain strategic balance.
☝️ Our repeated warnings in this regard have been ignored, and the US-made ground-based INF systems are being deployed in Europe and the Asia-Pacific. In this regard, the Russian Foreign Ministry states that the conditions for maintaining a unilateral moratorium on the deployment of similar systems have ceased to exist. We are authorised to declare that the Russian Federation no longer considers itself bound by the previously adopted self-imposed restrictions.
Decisions on the specific variables as they apply to response measures will be made by the leadership of the Russian Federation based on interagency analysis of the scope of deployment of the US-made and other Western ground-launched INF systems, as well as overall developments in international security and strategic stability.

💬 On 26 April, the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation in the course of their combat operations defeated the Ukrainian troops that had invaded the Kursk region.
Currently, the Ukrainian and Western propaganda seeks to conceal the crimes of the Kiev regime in the Kursk region by launching a global disinformation campaign that justifies, denies or conceals the atrocities committed by the AFU against the civilian population of our country.
Unfortunately, these atrocities remain unnoticed by international organisations, including the United Nations and the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe.
Today's event is aimed at filling in these gaps.
