Plans for this summer in Barcelona 🇪🇸

Summer is in town, which means warm weather, al fresco dinners, the beach and walks. Where to go and what to do? There are a few ideas.

🏖 Lying on the beach
The most popular is Barceloneta beach. It is known for its lively atmosphere, lots of bars, restaurants and street performers.

A little further north is Bogatell Beach. It's quieter and has all the amenities. When you get bored with swimming and sunbathing, you can play table tennis or volleyball.

Nova Icaria Beach. Another popular beach near the Olympic Village. The beach is 415 meters long, there is a place to eat and have fun.

🎸Go to a music festival
We have a #events tag for them.
This summer is rich in music and events. There will be Primavera, Sonar, Mad Cool.

😐 It's always a good idea to go out to dinner.
At Can Majó, located just off Barcelona. Paella, seafood and beautiful sea views.
At La Flauta, located in the Eixample neighborhood. If you want to sit on the outdoor terrace and enjoy Catalan cuisine.

😎 Take a walk down the Rambla
A popular pedestrian street in the city center. To immerse yourself in the vibrant atmosphere of the city, listen to street musicians, watch street artists and buy some trinkets to take home.

Also check out the Boqueria Market. The Boqueria Market is one of the largest and most famous markets in Europe and is located near the Ramblas. A great place to try the local food and drink.

Spain remains one of the most favorite vacation destinations for tourists from all over the world

The fight against overtourism is only gaining momentum. Recently, some of the autonomous communities have introduced new rules for tourists.

Tourists are reminded that:
One must have enough money
And show that they can feed themselves for the entire trip before they can enter Spain.
Tourists will need to have at least 100€, for each day of vacation, and 900€ for any unexpected expenses that happen.

No smoking on the beach
Smoking is banned on all beaches in Barcelona in 2022. There is a fine for violation.
On the Balearic Islands, too, smoking is banned on most beaches. About the ban warns 4-meter banner. There are no fines yet, the authorities hope that for now there is enough sense of responsibility.

Quieter is better
Alicante has introduced regulations regarding noise pollution. Since 2019, visitors and establishments are fined between €600 and €30,000 for excessive noise, such as loud music and dancing.
This year, the rules were tightened: Now tourists can be fined for talking too loudly, turning up the music on the beach.

Restrictions on all-inclusive drinks
Drunk and noisy tourists are a big problem for the Spanish authorities and locals. That's why some cities (Magaluf, Sant Antonio and El Arenal, for example) have imposed drink restrictions in all-inclusive hotels.
What's the limit? 6 drinks: 3 at lunch and 3 at dinner.

The new dress code
Last year, several Mallorca bars and restaurants introduced new rules to make sure tourists dress appropriately.

Four co-working spaces for productive days ⚡️

MOB -— Makers of Barcelona is a community of people who believe that it is possible to combine work, life and personal fulfillment. And they put this idea into co-working spaces. There are several subnoscription rates, and there is a free trial day.

The atmosphere at Cometa Coffee House will especially appeal to those who are immersed in a creative project and really want to finish it. Tasty coffee, bright interior with posters to distract you during breaks.

La Vaca is downtown. This is a dynamic and creative space and community. There are a bunch of different formats of events. You can come for yoga, a workshop, and just lunch. The most minimal pass is a weekly pass. It costs 80 euros excluding tax.

Kubik is located in the heart of the Gracia neighborhood. There are also activities, conferences and workshops. Open 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., 3:30 to 6:30 p.m.

The euro, the moon, and embroidery have it. Yes, the downside 🙃

Barcelona has one, too. Today is about the facts that it's good to know before you move. Yes, it's sunny and delicious, beaches and sunshine, offices of international companies. But...

> High cost of living
It's higher here than in other parts of Spain. It's the most expensive city in Spain to live in, the cost of living here is 35.51% higher than the national average.

> High levels of petty crime
Although Barcelona's crime rate has decreased due to the absence of tourists in the pandemic, the city still has a very high level of petty crime compared to other cities. In 2019, there were 299 daily robberies in the city, that's 12 robberies every hour.

Pickpockets steal most often, and they especially like handbags, purses and phones. Despite this, overall, Barcelona is a relatively safe city. In 2021 it ranked 11th safest city by The Economist, ahead of Frankfurt, New York, London, Madrid and Paris.

> Rent fraud
In addition to petty crime, there are several types of fraud in the housing market in Barcelona. Be vigilant, especially if you're new to the city. Never sign a rental agreement without visiting the property in person, and don't hand over any money before you receive the keys. To avoid getting complacent, ask a real estate agent or lawyer to walk you through the contract.

> If you have long-term plans, you will have to learn 2 languages
Catalan is one of the two official languages of Barcelona, and many signs, official documents and menus are written in Catalan rather than Spanish.

This point is one of controversy. Some make do with just Spanish, but there are cases where Catalan proves useful. All public schools teach in Catalan, so families with school-age children will inevitably have to learn Catalan and Spanish as soon as they arrive. And it's probably important for those who want a career here. What do you think?

> It's not just the architectural heritage
There are also ugly and disadvantaged neighborhoods in the city, like Raval, or parts of the Gothic Quarter, Sant'Adria de Besos and La Mina. These neighborhoods also have the highest crime rate. Don't walk here at night.

> Overtourism
There's a shocking amount of tourists and it's not just the crowded sights and main streets, but also the piles of people in transport, the unnecessary noise, and the constant price increases.

🇪🇸 Despite this, Barcelona is still one of the best and most attractive cities in the world. What can't you get used to? What factor weighs so heavily that you should consider another city?

Brief Herald 🇪🇸

No more fast-fashion: this year Inditex will launch a secondhand platform with items from Zara. It has already been launched in the U.K., where you can donate, repair, or sell items.

12 Air Europa flights today (between Barcelona and Palma, Madrid and Palma, Rome, Milan, Lisbon, Paris and Malaga) have been cancelled because of the pilots' strike.

Spain expects more summer tourists than before the pandemic. Put a blue heart if you're already used to the number of people on the streets. Red if you've been wondering where to hide from people for a long time.

What to do with children in the summer?

Like all the other three seasons: feed them, ask them to stop yelling and play. Or you can send them to camp.

The children's vacations in Spain last 10-12 weeks, starting at the end of June and lasting until mid-September. It is one of the longest summer vacations in Europe, in France it lasts about 8 weeks.

If you're not a teacher or self-employed, but a salaried employee, you can take no more than 2 weeks off at a time, which means parents often find themselves at a loss as to what to occupy their children for the rest of the summer.

What options are available and how much does it cost?

🏖 Summer school camps
Most schools organize summer camps (campamentos de verano) and it's convenient. Kids still go to their school, but instead of classes, they do fun daily activities, crafts, and games. And they go on day trips.

If your school does not have this, you can always sign up for campamento at a nearby school. Sign up in advance to have enough places.

The camp costs 70 to 100€ per week for a full day and usually includes lunch. However, camps do not usually run all summer, so you still have to come up with entertainment, but only for August.

Another advantage is that the kids are often with their friends in a familiar setting, but that can be a disadvantage. They may not feel like it's a vacation or a break from school.

🚀 Specialized or themed summer camps
Another option is a themed camp based on children's hobbies and passions. There are many different ones focusing on sports, languages, even music and theater.

In Barcelona, the City Zoo offers a summer camp, as does FC Barcelona, where children can spend a whole day learning soccer from the professionals.
In Valencia, the Biopark offers a summer camp, as well as several local outdoor pools.
Try typing «campamento de verano» plus the name of the town or city where you’ll be staying online. You’ll find options there for almost all of Spain.

Since these are private companies not sponsored by public schools, they usually cost considerably more than school camps. Prepare to pay from 200€ per week, and double that in popular ones.

🤝 Temporary nanny or au pair
If you want to keep the kids at home.

There are many young people looking for summer jobs, and many nannies who may be out of work with their regular family for the summer.

This is a good opportunity for children to learn another language by hiring a native speaker from another country. Many Spanish families hire native English speakers for the summer, and you can hire a Spanish or French nanny.

Au Pair salaries in Spain are 70€ per week if you live in the countryside, and 80€ per week if you live in the countryside.

10 types of people you'll meet at your local bar 🍻

According to Spain's National Institute of Statistics (INE), there is one bar for every 270 inhabitants of the country. About 0.3% of the country's population lives in a municipality without a single bar.

Today's post is about those without whom it's hard to imagine a traditional neighborhood bar. It's not about a pub or an elegant cocktail bar. Rather, it's a place where you can have a beer, coffee or tapas at any time of the day. Unfortunately, at the end of 2021, such bars were closing at a rate of 20.7 bars/day. They are being replaced by chain restaurants, most of the bars have not survived the pandemic.

So, look for the bar:
✔️Señor sipping carajillo quietly.
✔️ A professional bartender. May be grumpy. Might turn out to be a bar owner.
✔️ Señorita with perfect hair and makeup. May be met at 9 a.m. for a cup of coffee and milk or a glass of wine.
✔️ A man sitting at tragaperras (slot machines).
✔️ The guy who smokes with one foot inside and the other foot outside. Can watch everyone, give advice, and eventually become a familiar part of the bar landscape.
✔️ The janitor who drinks his morning beer after work.
✔️ The person in charge of cutting jamon.
✔️ Students and teens eating breakfast on the way home after a night out/party.
✔️ Someone throwing napkins on the floor.
✔️ Abuela spoiling her grandchildren.

👀 Recognize someone on the list?
