Thursday News 📅
Every year the heat in Spain comes earlier and earlier, this year will surprise even more (and faster). It will only take Spain a week to go from winter to summer — meteorologists warn that temperatures in some parts of the country will reach 30 degrees as early as March.
Spain is preparing a law according to which at least 40% of the boards of companies must be women. If passed, the law will apply to all publicly traded companies from July 1, 2024 and to all companies with at least 250 employees and annual revenues of 50 million euros from June 30, 2026.
A whale with severe scoliosis has been spotted off the coast of Valencia. This is an injury it may have sustained due to a collision with a ship. The rescue team examined it, but was unable to secure a tracker on it due to the whale's size, deformity and location.

Every region has something interesting to try, something specialty. Here are a few of these delights: from churros to sangria 👇🏻
Madrid eats:
🔸Tortilla Española (or Spanish tortilla) is a classic Spanish dish of potatoes, onions and eggs. Often served as a tapa, snack or breakfast.
🔸Churros with chocolate for dessert. These fried dough sticks are served with a cup of rich hot chocolate for dipping, making them a delicious and hearty dessert.
🔸As a drink we suggest Rioja, a red wine made in the Rioja region of Spain. It is known for its bold and fruity flavor that pairs well with a variety of dishes.
Barcelona:
🔸Eating paella.
🔸Patatatas bravas (spicy potatoes). It usually consists of white potatoes cut in 2 centimeter wide cubes, then fried in oil and served warm with a spicy sauce.
🔸Cava, a sparkling wine similar to champagne, is preferred as a drink.
In Andalusia:
🔸Eat a cold soup called Salmorejo made of tomatoes, bread, and olive oil.
🔸No one leaves without a second cold soup, gazpacho. This cold soup is made with tomatoes, peppers, cucumber and olive oil and is one of the main dishes of Andalusian cuisine.
🔸 And sangria for a drink, a medium alcoholic wine-based drink with bits of fruit, berries, sugar, sparkling water and sometimes a little brandy and dry liqueur, or sometimes spices.

Happy Friday! 📅
A Spanish court ordered a man to pay his ex-wife 200,000 euros for 25 years of unpaid housework during their marriage. At the time of their marriage, the couple entered into an agreement whereby each spouse retained exclusive ownership of property acquired during the marriage. However, this turned out to be beneficial only to the husband, who started several businesses while the wife was busy raising children and doing chores around the house. Photo from the heroine's archive.
And the Spanish airports El Hierro, Pamplona, Reus, Murcia and Asturias were included in the list of the best airports in the world. The rating is made by the Airports Council International which since 2006 polls passengers in almost 400 airports in 95 countries. Participants take into account airport accessibility and cleanliness, quality of service and staff performance.

This is the rubric #architecture. Today its hero is the family house or Galician wine estate, or pazo (a type of traditional Galician house) 🏛.
Its owner restores the house without changing the aesthetics and design, but only personalizes and restores it. The owner inherited the house from his father in 1998, and for two decades it stood untouched, and in 2015 the owner decided to open a winery. He wants to «return the house to what it was 150 years ago.» And national and regional heritage laws don’t allow owners of historic Galician homes to do full-scale renovations. The house is about 2,136 square feet and has about 50 rooms.

Travell Off Path has compiled a list of 7 ideal cities for digital nomads. We translated and are ready to agree or argue. Why don’t you join us?
Madrid. It has historic architecture, museums, developed infrastructure and moderate apartment prices (compared to Barcelona). While in Barcelona, rents have risen by 25%, in Madrid by 12%.
Valencia. A fantastic city that makes up for its smallness in style and design. Not by chance, it is home to famous architect Santiago Calatrava. And paella was invented here as well.
Seville. It is also the birthplace of flamenco and the capital of Andalusia. It is warmer and drier than the rest of Spain. It’s a peculiar city in which different cultures mingle.
Cadiz. If you’re a fan of sherry, this is the place to come. It’s the oldest city in Europe and a paradise for history buffs. The city once served as a port for ships that set out to discover the new world.
San Sebastian. Resort city on the Bay of Biscay, located in the mountainous Basque Country. It’s known for its beaches and restaurants with inventive Michelin-starred chefs. Many consider it the most beautiful city in Spain.
Palma de Mallorca. The largest of the Balearic Islands is a great option for digital nomads. It’s relatively warm all year round, not too expensive and has great beaches. Ideal for those who want an island, but with infrastructure.
Barcelona. You already know all about it. The users of Nomadlist rate the city with 3.5 stars (out of 5). do you agree with the rating?
⚡️ We find Madrid, San Sebastian and Cadiz the most attractive places to work. These cities combine history, convenient cafes, and the right infrastructure for work.
It’s like working on an island is a little harder than in the city. What do you think?

Monday news trio 📅
Spanish Cuisine ranked third best in the world by TasteAtlas (first place went to Italian cuisine, and the second — to Greek). Iberian ham (aka jamón) got the highest rating, followed by Manchego cheese, fried fish, espetos (fish on a skewer), grilled shrimp, and, of course, paella.
The weather continues to amaze: the heat of 30 degrees this week will be replaced by rain, strong winds and low temperatures, which are more characteristic of this time of year. In some regions, the temperature will drop to 7-10 degrees.
In Barcelona, the number of the homeless growing rapidly. In Catalonia, most of the funds allocated to the fight against homelessness. First, a homeless person is registered (this is necessary to access basic services), and after a while they can receive the cherished documents necessary for life and work.

News digest ⚡️
The Spanish government is planning to introduce a new university entrance exam. Today, hundreds of students will write a pilot version of it and test its different models. The changes are aimed at encouraging critical thinking and reasoning instead of rote learning.
If you don’t believe in overtourism, here’s a fact: In 2022, Barcelona’s metropolitan beaches welcomed about 11 million visitors. The occupancy rate affected all municipalities, with Castelldefels being the most visited.
The green metro line has a new addition: a new train, so far 1 in 50. The old trains will gradually be replaced with new, more comfortable and environmentally friendly ones, and this will last until the summer of 2024.
And here’s how the AI sees overtourism 👆🏼

Some startups founded after 2020 that are interesting to watch 👀
There’s a coffee community, a platform for finding a second home, and fair use of personal data.
Vivla is originally from Madrid. The company helps with the purchase of shared ownership of second homes in top European countries. Each owner of such a home can purchase up to 4 shares with a guaranteed six-week vacation on each. The company takes care of all the typical hassles: furnishing, repairs and property management. Already raised $30 million.
GoodNews is based in Barcelona in a pandemic. In its chaos, the guys decided to fill the city’s neighborhoods with something positive. They turned a newsstand into a coffee shop where coffee was poured in exchange for a story from customers. They had to tell them what good things had happened to them in the past few days. Gradually the kiosk evolved into a brand and a community of people with a good mission and good coffee. Now here they are developing best practices for growing coffee, promoting sustainable agriculture and knowing everything about coffee.
QueryLayer was invented in Valencia. Their platform helps companies become «brands of good data». How? Using automated workflows and PrivacyUX, they build and maintain customer loyalty through transparent use of their personal data.
Yumminn was founded in Barcelona in 2021. It is an app for restaurants integrated with point of sale (POS) systems. With it, restaurant customers can pay their own bill in seconds. Users simply scan a QR code at the table, view their bill, then it can be split and leave a tip. The young company has already received 1.4 million euros.

Wednesday, dudes! News digest 📅
Barcelona will become the first city in Spain to make a public pet cemetery. The city council will invest 1.1 million euros in the project and customers will have to pay about 200 euros for the service of burying a pet.
Spain does not want to make anti-inflationary food basket following the example of France. According to the National Institute of Statistics (INE), prices have risen 16.6% compared to last year. Some companies are trying to help customers with discounts (such as Carrefour and Eroski), and some supermarkets will cease to be profitable if prices fall.
Barcelona has lost the first place in the ranking of the most competitive tourist cities, now it is taken by Madrid. Third place went to Valencia, and San Sebastian is in fourth place.

There is one beautiful promenade in Barcelona 🪩
Okay, there's more than one. But this one I want to tell you more about.
«Escaleras y Mirador Vela» is a project by the architectural bureau External Reference. You can walk, run and do sports here, take pictures or look at the waves. If the facade reminds you of sea salt crystals, it is no coincidence that they inspired the authors, and the «brokenness» of the promenade refers to the sea rocks and their texture.
