United States Army Special Forces distinctive unit insignia
SF Crest

Special Forces Crest
USASFC CrestThe Special Forces crest insignia was adopted in 1960 and approved as the Special Forces regimental designator in 1984. Its design reflects both the lineage and mission of Special Forces.

In 1890, the crossed arrows were officially prescribed as uniform insignia for the U.S. Army Indian Scouts who served in the American west from 1860 through 1939. In 1942, during World War II, a joint U.S./Canadian special operations unit was established to conduct operations behind enemy lines. Members of this First Special Service Force wore the historic crossed arrows as their branch insignia.

In the current Special Forces crest, the intersecting dagger represents the V-42 dagger issued to each member of the force. The encircling scroll which arches at the base bears the Special Forces motto, "DE OPPRESSO LIBER" which is translated from Latin as "To Free the Oppressed."

The distinctive unit insignia (better known as unit crest) of the 1st Special Forces still has the V-42 prominently displayed in the center of the design between two crossed arrows. It has been worn by Special Forces soldiers since 1960 when it was originally approved for wear.

Just realized my posts yesterday about Nahum were from Habbakkuk.

Folks, I make mistakes. I read through Nahum & started on Habbakkuk without realizing it.

Habbakkuk 2:18-19 was the part where I was referencing.

Ugh.

That’s embarrassing.
Japan Cherry Blossoms Reach Earliest Peak Bloom in 1,200 Years | AccuWeather

By Maura Kelly, AccuWeather meteorologist
Updated Apr. 1, 2021 10:36 AM MDT

Records about the cherry blossoms have been traced back to 812 AD by Yasuyuki Aono, a researcher at Osaka Prefecture University, using imperial court documents and diaries.

Since about 1800, the data suggest that the peak flowering date has moved from the middle of April to the beginning of April, the BBC reported.

AURORAS AND A VOLCANO: Iceland's Geldingadalur volcano is turning into a must-stop destination for aurora photographers. The latest photo combining geothermal and geomagnetic activity comes from Wioleta Gorecka standing on the banks of the iconic Blue Lagoon.

"My friend had the great idea to take a picture of the BIG THREE: the Geldingadalur volcano, which just erupted, Northern Lights and the Blue Lagoon," says Gorecka. "We were lucky. On March 31st, a little surge of geomagnetic activity produced swirls of green near the volcano's plume; both were reflected in the still waters of the lagoon. It was a wonderful night!"

Pro tip for other photographers on the Reykjanes peninsula: A solar wind stream could hit Earth's magnetosphere on April 5th. That would be a good night to try your own aurora shot near Geldingadalur.

Mysterious brain infection is making young California bears ‘fearless’ towards humans | Live Science

By Harry Baker - Staff Writer
2 April 2021

Infected bears are less scared of people and are struggling to survive on their own.

The bears, which are all around 1 year old, appear to be suffering from a form of infectious encephalitis — inflammation of the brain tissue that can be caused by viruses, bacteria, fungi and parasites, as well as part of an autoimmune response. But veterinarians are unsure exactly what is causing the problem or how fast it is spreading among the population.

Symptoms include a prominent head tilt, lethargic movements, muscle tremors, seizures, walking in circles and being significantly underweight, as well as a surprising fearlessness towards humans.

The disease also doesn't appear to be transmissible between individual bears, Bryant said. This is encouraging for the rest of the population but has left researchers confused as to what is causing it.

"We have identified five new viruses from black bears, some of which are being pursued further as possible causes of the encephalitis," Munk said. "We are also working with a research lab to further evaluate whether a protozoan parasite might be the cause."

However, it is also possible that there is more than one pathogen responsible for the encephalitis, Munk said.

Crowded Train Crashes In Taiwan, Killing 50, Injuring 69 Ahead Of Holiday Weekend | ZeroHedge

Taiwanese officials said the accident was apparently caused by a maintenance truck sliding down an embankment and striking the train just before it entered the tunnel. The truck's emergency brake was reportedly not active, and police have taken its driver for questioning. "Our train crashed into a truck," said one surviving passenger speaking on Taiwan television. "The truck came falling down."

In what appears to be the worst train wreck in Taiwan's history, a passenger train crashed Friday while entering a tunnel north of the eastern city of Hualien, killing at least 48 people and injuring another 66. The crash, which unfolded at the start of a long holiday weekend, was particularly devastating since the train was packed with nearly 500 travelers. Transport Minister Lin Chia-lung told reporters 490 passengers were aboard at the time of the crash.

Taiwanese news reports claimed that many passengers were forced to stand on the overcrowded train, which amplified the damage caused by the impact since many were simply thrown across the car upon impact.

How small mistakes can result in major disasters, such as:
The Space Shuttle Challenger Explosion and the O-ring
The Space Shuttle Challenger Explosion and the O-ring

Published Dec 16, 2016
By Nemil Dalal

The cause of the disaster was traced to an O-ring, a circular gasket that sealed the right rocket booster. This had failed due to the low temperature (31°F / -0.5°C) at launch time – a risk that several engineers noted, but that NASA management dismissed. NASA’s own pre-launch estimates were that there was a 1 in 100,000 chance of shuttle failure for any given launch – and poor statistical reasoning was a key reason the launch went through.
...
But NASA management made one catastrophic mistake: this was not that chart they should have been looking at.
...
This comparison highlights just how important having a full set of data is – and how it might literally mean the difference between life and death. You can't just look at the problem events, you also have to look at the absence of problem events.
...
I drew a key lesson from the Challenger disaster: looking at selective data that excludes critical information leads to flawed decision-making.
...
My particular interest is how selective data has been particularly troublesome in media, especially with the growth of social media. In the next post in this series, we’ll look at the challenges of selective media coverage, seeing how it leads us to bad inferences and distorts the decisions we then make.

Do You Live in 1 of the 11 Sanctuary States?

Sanctuary policies are those followed by towns, cities, counties, states, and other jurisdictions that restrict most forms of cooperation with federal immigration authorities. While jurisdictions are not compelled by federal law to participate in federal immigration enforcement activities, federal law (8 USC § 1373) prohibits them from actively obstructing enforcement of federal law. In addition, sanctuary policies may violate the supremacy clause of the United States Constitution (Article VI, Clause 2) and the 10th Amendment.

Most importantly, sanctuary policies place the public at risk by preventing the federal authorities from locating, arresting, and prosecuting criminal aliens. The result is that all residents, including legal immigrants and illegal aliens, are in danger of being victimized, even killed, by criminal illegal aliens who benefited from protections afforded by sanctuary policies.

Currently, there are 11 states in the nation that have through executive action or passage of a law declared themselves “sanctuary states.” Although not a state, the District of Columbia is also considered a sanctuary jurisdiction. All are part the approximately 600 sanctuary jurisdictions in the U.S., most of which were established after 2000.

Mafia fugitive was living a quiet island life. Then police found his YouTube cooking show.

The alleged gangster's "love for Italian cuisine” — and tattoo ink — made his arrest possible, police said.

Though he carefully hid his face during the videos, Biart failed to disguise a distinctive giveaway: his body tattoos.

He had been wanted for allegedly trafficking cocaine from the Netherlands since 2014, police said.

Biart, 53, had been living in the Dominican Republic for the past five years and police said he had been keeping a low profile during his stay in the Caribbean — besides the cooking videos posted to the internet.

Alerted by his wife's YouTube activity and armed with the knowledge that the fugitive had previously worked at a restaurant in Italy, Galasso said, police discovered the cooking videos and realized they had their man.
