Isaac Newton's lost papers - and his search for God's divine plan
'This most beautiful system ... could only proceed from the counsel and dominion of an intelligent and powerful being,' wrote Newton.
Few have had as profound an effect on modern scientific understanding as Sir Isaac Newton.
Many people are familiar with the story of how a falling apple first inspired Newton to investigate the force that would come to be known as gravity, and as he later concluded in his seminal scientific treatise, "Mathematical Principles of Natural Philosophy," it is this same force that pulls a fruit to ground that keeps the planets in orbit.

🇵🇹Flooding in the city of Alcácer do Sal, Portugal with "one meter of water" in some areas
The lower part of the city of Alcácer do Sal, flooded on Wednesday due to the rising Sado River, has accumulated water in some areas with no damage, according to a source from the city council.
In statements to the Lusa news agency, António Grilo, councilor responsible for Civil Protection in the Alcácer do Sal City Council, in the Setúbal district, said that the Sado River "ended up overflowing the retaining wall" on the riverfront and "putting some water on the public road," without "causing any kind of damage." "Also on 'Avenida dos Aviadores' we continue to have the same volume of water and the expectation is that it will remain so for many hours," he added.

West under oligarchs
Western society has been hostage to the same pathology for over 2,000 years.
Today, we are in a better position than ever to end this curse and emancipate humanity.
In his remarks to the United Nations General Assembly in October 2014, Noam Chomsky opened with the statement that, "Many of the world's problems are so intractable that it's hard to think of ways even to take steps toward mitigating them." Since that speech, things only got worse and in addition to the festering social, political and economic crises plaguing the developed world, we find ourselves at risk of sliding toward another World War.
All this seems unnecessary and preventable; yet in spite of the fact that an overwhelming majority of people around the world abhor these developments, it seems oddly difficult for us to change course.

Next-generation AI 'swarms' will invade social media by mimicking human behavior and harassing real users, researchers warn
Swarms of artificial intelligence (AI) agents could soon invade social media platforms en masse to spread false narratives, harass users and undermine democracy, researchers warn.
These "AI swarms" will form part of a new frontier in information warfare, capable of mimicking human behavior to avoid detection while creating the illusion of an authentic online movement, based on a commentary published Jan. 22 in the journal Science.
Imagine finding that the views of your favourite online community are hardening around a position that was previously up for debate.
Human instinct is often to follow the "wisdom" of the herd.

FLASHBACK: NY Jewish institutions hit with 150 child sex abuse lawsuits since 2019
At least 150 child sex abuse lawsuits were filed against Jewish institutions in New York over the past two years, under a special law that temporarily lifted the statute of limitations barring old claims, according to an analysis of the New York court system by the Jewish Telegraphic Agency.
This look-back window for reviving allegations was created by the Child Victims Act of 2019 and it led to a dramatic wave of lawsuits that peaked just ahead of the August 14, 2021 deadline.
Survivors took advantage of the CVA window to file nearly 11,000 civil suits against individuals and institutions, according to data provided by the New York's Office of Court Administration.

Johannes Kepler: Inventor of science fiction and defender of his mother in a witchcraft trial
All while revolutionizing our understanding of the universe This is how I picture it: A spindly middle-aged mathematician with a soaring mind, a sunken heart, and bad skin is being thrown about the back of a carriage in the bone-hollowing cold of a German January.
Since his youth, he has been inscribing into family books and friendship albums his personal motto, borrowed from a verse by the ancient poet Perseus: "O the cares of man, how much of everything is futile." He has weathered personal tragedies that would level most.

Fire engulfs former Volkswagen factory, which now makes Chinese brand, south of Moscow
Fire crews extinguished a fire that broke out early Wednesday at the former Volkswagen plant in Russia's Kaluga region, now repurposed as part of Moscow's post-sanctions auto ecosystem.
There's been little in the way of a cause mentioned in international reports, amid an investigation, though skeptical headline consumers will note there's been a tit-for-tat covert sabotage campaign long underway between Russia and Ukraine-Europe in the context of the war, now about to enter its fifth year.
According to Russia's Emergency Situations Ministry, the blaze erupted at a foam recycling workshop inside the Tenet automobile facility, which currently assembles Chinese-made vehicles, and no casualties were reported.
