Russia's allies are mostly wartorn/communist shitholes.
Wartorn African countries, North Korea, Some of the Middle East, etc

Ukraine's allies are what you would call 'prosperous, well-off nations' that can stand on their own two feet without having to resort to oppression or not being able to 'stand' at all.

Europe, the entire Western world, etc.

I will translate this into non-bullshit.

The United States supported the Maidan revolution as it was a population's revolution for self-determination. Ethnic Russians are always and have always been a minority in Eastern Ukraine, as Donbass has always been a Russian SPEAKING territory. Many of the Donbassians, despite speaking Russian, are ethnic Ukrainian and do not support Russia and these same people are imprisoned and silenced.

There is a VICE documentary on the Donetsk People's Republic available on YouTube that I recommend you watch if you haven't already. It sheds light on the incompetence and oppression that this proxy state evokes on its citizens.
