El Salvador's Bitcoin Usage Has Not Taken Off

https://www.nber.org/system/files/working_papers/w29968/w29968.pdf

A recent survey from the National Bureau of Economic Research (American non-profit) has shown a lack of Bitcoin adoption on the government's platform Chivo wallet.

1,800 households were interviewed, just over half of all respondents had installed the app, only 20% of respondents continued to use it after they received the $30 reward for setting it up.

My Analysis
Cryptocurrency cannot be strong-armed onto the public, especially a state-sponsored platform, even with incentives like BTC/dollar feeless conversion. El Salvador's implementation of this solution has failed for several reasons:

- People don't trust the government
- The wallet is custodial, users aren't actually in control of their funds
- The wallet is KYC
- The wallet already has had claims of unauthorized charges, blocked accounts, phishing, identity theft

From the study:

"The most important reason not to download the app, conditional on knowing about it, is that users prefer to use cash, which was followed by trust issues—respondents did not trust the system or
bitcoin itself"

How can other localities learn from El Salvador's failed implementation?

India Orders VPN Companies to Collect and Hand Over User Data

A new government order will force virtual private networks to store user data for five years or longer.

In India, virtual private network companies will be required to collect extensive customer data -- and maintain it for five years or more -- under a new national directive from the country's Computer Emergency Response Team, known as CERT-in. It's a policy that will likely make life more difficult for both VPN companies and VPN users there.

The body, under the country's Ministry of Electronics and IT, announced Thursday that VPNs in the country will have to keep customer names, validated physical and IP addresses, usage patterns and other forms of personally identifiable information. As first reported by Entracker, those who don't comply could potentially face up to a year in prison under the governing law cited in the new directive.

The directive isn't limited to VPN providers. Data centers and cloud service providers are both listed under the same provision. The companies will have to keep customer information even after the customer has canceled their subnoscription or account. And, in all case, CERT-in will require the companies to report on their users' "unauthorized access to social media accounts."

CDC Tracked Millions of Phones to See If Americans Complied With COVID-19 Lockdown Orders, Documents Reveal

🇺🇸
@COVID19Up: The CDC bought access to location data harvested from tens of millions of phones in the U.S. to perform analysis of compliance with curfews and other patterns, according to CDC documents obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request.

The documents reveal the expansive plan the CDC had to use location data from a highly controversial data broker. SafeGraph, the company the CDC paid $420,000 for access to one year of data to, includes Peter Thiel and the former head of Saudi intelligence among its investors. Google banned the company from the Play Store in June.

The CDC used the data for monitoring curfews, with the documents saying that SafeGraph’s data “has been critical for ongoing response efforts, such as hourly monitoring of activity in curfew zones or detailed counts of visits to participating pharmacies for vaccine monitoring.”

Homes Being Sold For BTC

I was reading about a home being sold for BTC in Louisville KY.

The seller of the property was reportedly looking to invest profits from the sale into bitcoin by liquidating multiple properties. The buyer had taken an interest in Bitcoin some years prior and suggested he could make the purchase using BTC.

The property was sold for $65,000, according to Brown. After commission, noscript fees and the recording fees being paid in dollars, the final purchasing price was “ roughly 1 Bitcoin” according to the report, which was worth approximately $33,000 at press time.

Ridge noted that normal paperwork and processes were completed, but ultimately, the actual purchase of the home was a direct transfer from one Bitcoin wallet to another. The Courier Journal reports the transaction took about eight seconds to complete, and instead of paying a wire fee of $25-$30, the fee was only $0.70.

Then I realized there were other properties being bought and sold for BTC on other online platforms. Its a cool experience to see different properties on the market for crypto. A lot of these sites are in their early stages, please do your own research and use at your own risk.

Hey peeps,

I've been doing a good amount of research into EMF, how it works, and its health effects - there's a staggering amount of info and I want to break it down simply.

As someone who's been around computers all their life, its a critical issue to understand. We have a right to know any potential dangers to our long term health and to take action before its too late.

I'll be releasing a #TBOT article about EMF and solutions on how to deal with it in the coming weeks!

What are your thoughts on this issue? Do you have concerns on its safety? Anything you've noticed with your own health?

Nokia CEO Says 6G Will Be Here by 2030 — but You Might Not Access It Via Your Smartphone

Nokia CEO Pekka Lundmark expects 6G mobile networks to be in operation by the end of the decade but he doesn’t think the smartphone will be the most “common interface” by then.

Speaking on a panel at the World Economic Forum in Davos last Tuesday (May 24), Lundmark said he expects 6G to hit the commercial market around 2030, which coincides roughly with when Huawei expects to see the technology on the market.

Asked when he thinks the world will move away from using smartphones to using smart glasses and other devices that are worn on the face, Lundmark said it will happen before 6G arrives.

“By then, definitely the smartphone as we know it today will not anymore be the most common interface,” he said. “Many of these things will be built directly into our bodies.”

Will Linux eventually come to new Apple Macs?

https://asahilinux.org/about/

Asahi Linux is a project and community with the goal of porting Linux to Apple Silicon Macs, starting with the 2020 M1 Mac Mini, MacBook Air, and MacBook Pro.

Our goal is not just to make Linux run on these machines but to polish it to the point where it can be used as a daily OS. Doing this requires a tremendous amount of work, as Apple Silicon is an entirely undocumented platform. In particular, we will be reverse engineering the Apple GPU architecture and developing an open-source driver for it.

Asahi Linux is developed by a thriving community of free and open source software developers.
