I'm not attacking you or you project, just stating that not diferentiating open source with Free Libre misleads many users. .

Had to join to comment on this. It's an old philosophical argument.

Having been part of this movement from day one, the egos involved have been very vocal about freedoms based on individual preferences, and watching it all play out was an interesting drama.

Fun fact: Did you know that Borland's compilers allowed a person to compile executable software which could then be freely shared or sold, whereas Microsoft's general compiler did not? A person needed to spend an extra thousand dollars for that "freedom" and even then, there were limitations.

While I disagree with Stallman on certain things of which he has set his position and will stand by and defend it until his death, he holds a bar that others may wish to aspire to.

On the open source side of things, there were leanings towards the Microsoft model. The source being open (viewable) while modifications were not allowed without licensing. Thus the different license models.

Anyhow, in the tech industry, there are many "standards" by which we can more easily gauge our freedoms by. Clear, concise, and standard language and licensing helps towards that end.

I WILL NOT call Linux GNU/Linux because Torvalds only borrowed from GNU, but the core is the creation of his and so it is Linux, plain and simple.

But, to understand Stallman's position is to better understand the original intention of free software. And that hasn't changed.
Nice work!

Success. Took my old (~2010) laptop, couldn’t install from USB because it just wouldn’t boot from USB. Couldn’t use Ubuntu because needed to burn a CD and boot from CD. So I installed Debian and now I’m up and running.

Official Community | Telegram Channel |Telegram Chat Odysee | Hive | Minds

This morning I'm putting together the 'Open Source Survival Toolkit', an introduction to awesome open-source tools. When we publish it'll mark the end of the operating systems module (for now) and we'll start learning about software, privacy, networking, and phones!

We've converted people from all walks of life to operating systems that don't spy on or control their users.

Share this knowledge to protect your friends & family. Sign up to the mailing list - unlike other publications, our emails do not track!

#TakeBackOurTech: Open-Source Survival Toolkit Will Be Released Monday
Official Community | Telegram Channel |Telegram Chat Odysee | Hive | Minds

I am constantly finding that the articles and content become much bigger than originally planned. The Open Source Survival Toolkit article & video will be released Monday!

The goal is to do much more than just share the name and download link of a particular technology, but to explain the benefits and show you the best way to use it (at a high level to start with).

I'd like to hear from y'all in terms of what software you need on your new machines! Or maybe some software you've already found you'd like to drop knowledge on!

Following your installation article and video, I installed Linux Mint on my Lenovo laptop. I consider myself to be pretty dense with computers but the installation was easy and I'm enjoying getting to know my new Linux OS. All is going well. Thank you for your help, Ramiro!! Much love and gratitude! (And good riddance, Microsoft!)

above.phone Private Announcement

Some of you may be aware, we have been hard at work improving the above.phone - our take on the best de-googled phone out there. We wanted to give more information to those closest to us in the @takebackourtech and @neo_network communities before the official launch in September. Thanks for all your support. :)

Our first batch of phones have been shipped out and we are actively supporting them. I wanted to provide a few answers around the phones, so those who are ready to buy can make an informed decision.

Official Product Page
Official Purchase Page (Accepts Credit Card / BTC / LTC)

You have your choice of CalyxOS and GrapheneOS, there are detailed differences on that page but in essence you would use GrapheneOS for maximum security & privacy at the cost of usability.

CalyxOS has less phone hardening features but still strips out all the operating system level telemetry.

Additionally it ships with its own version of Google Play Services (microG). This makes your phone compatible with a wide selection of applications that are available on the Google Play Store (the Aurora Store on a de-googled phone). This greatly reduces the data sent to Google and lets you use apps that use Google Services if you really need them.

The second option is installation type. The minimal version leaves the phone untouched after installing the operating system. The Above version chooses the settings that are a reasonable improvement to the default experience, pre-installing the application suite, and adding our handcrafted wallpapers & themes.

There is no difference in price for the operating system or installation type. It is your choice!

The last option is the Above Privacy Suite, which we are putting the finishing touches on now. This will be a set of privacy services that the above.phone can easily be configured with, for multiple layers of private communication ontop of the phone itself. Privat email, VPN/DNS, video conferencing, e2e messaging, and alternative search. This comes at $100.00 a year, and the services launch in September.

We are putting the finishing touches on the Above Privacy Suite Services and our knowledgebase, which fill feature step by step instructions on migrating over your existing data, adjusting phone settings, setting up the Above Privacy Suite and using the phone for day-to-day needs. These should both be fully available in September for the official launch of the phone.

Every purchase you make supports the company behind #TakeBackOurTech, and either way we are committed to producing high quality education on taking back our technology.
#TakeBackOurTech: Taking A Break, & Self-Healing Education
Official Community | Telegram Channel |Telegram Chat Odysee | Hive | Minds

#TakeBackOurTech is our first content initiative and over the past few weeks we have learned an absolute ton. Putting out articles and videos multiple times a week requires discipline and coordination, but these trials are fulfilled every time we hear stories from you. We've been listening to all of the feedback over the past month as our viewers discussed the Operating Systems module and wanted to capture the highlights here.

- Explain the differences between free & open source software among others, and celebrate fully FOSS operating systems & solutions
- Create guides or curate resources for macOS users to transition to Linux
- Create guides or curate resources for Microsoft Surface users to transition to Linux

Internally, we have many things to improve on our content creation process, design, website, and programs. We will be sharing additional resources and articles later this month and regularly scheduled programming will return in September.

❤️ If you have any suggestions, please feel free to leave your comments in our chat, or use our contact form.

Selling Your Personal Data Is The Norm For The Mainstream Mobile App Culture
@neo_network | @neo_network_chat | source

I'm writing up an complete argument as to why people should ditch modern day phones, and through my research I continue to be appalled at the level of data collection that occurs behind the scenes.

Here's a snippet from an independent study that summarizes what data gets sent to major advertising platforms.

The issue is that modern day developers are desperate for income over their users privacy, leading to people's political affiliation, sexual orientation, and GPS locations being sold to advertising platforms.

If you care about privacy, you've gotta sacrifice some of the mainstream apps you've been using, or have a phone that can limit permissions and observe tracking.

Gentle reminder that above.phones are still on sale, we have a few units left before the official launch in September. Select the Above Privacy Suite for your own VPN/Search/Email/E2E chat services!
