👨‍💻 Working from the Beach and Hot Data Analyst Jobs in Thailand

I'm starting a series of posts about where and how to work as a data analyst abroad.

The first country on the list is Thailand, where I currently live. Thailand actively hires foreigners and offers work visas.

A few facts:

➡️ Many international companies have headquarters in Thailand.

➡️ Thailand attracts IT expats, creating a multinational and innovative environment.

➡️ Digital nomads love Thailand for its fast internet and low cost of living.

➡️ In many IT companies, the working language is English, which is convenient for expats.

Thailand is also a very friendly country.

Key employers in Thailand that hire foreigners:

Agoda: A popular online hotel and flight booking company with competitive prices. Over 4000 employees worldwide. Why do we work at Agoda?
Grab: The leading ride-hailing app in Southeast Asia, also offering food delivery, grocery delivery, and cashless payments. 6000+ employees.
FoodPanda: A tech company with a strong presence in Thailand, with over 9000 employees from 50+ countries. They deliver food with authentic recipes from around the world.
Lazada: The largest e-commerce platform in Southeast Asia, offering a wide range of products and services.

Hot job openings:

🔹 Hot analyst jobs (data, marketing, finance, etc.) at Agoda
🔹 Business Intelligence-Data Analysis at Lazada
🔹 [Cooperative Internship 2024] Machine Learning Intern, Data Team at Agoda
🔹 ManEx Data Visualization - Homecare SEA Intern at Unilever
🔹 Sales Operations Analyst at Grab

📍 This list of companies and job openings is not exhaustive. You can search for jobs on company websites and job search websites like LinkedIn Job, JobsDB (these links lead to analyst jobs).

P.S. In the photo, I'm working with my laptop on the beach. I do this about once a week. I've noticed that by the sea, I have a high level of concentration, and work hours fly by. There's a canopy for shade, and there are outlets and Wi-Fi near the loungers, although I use mobile internet because it's excellent here.

🏄‍♂️ Data Analytics in Surfing: A Startup Combining Hobby and Work

Today, I want to talk about a unique startup that combines data analytics, machine learning, and surfing.

Most of its employees are surfer-data specialists who merge their hobby (surfing) with remote data work.

Surfline is a company founded by American surfer Sean Collins. Its mission is to help surfers catch the perfect waves.

500K+ downloads on Google Play
7M+ visits to the website monthly

I use Surfline myself to check how good the surfing conditions are on any given day. For example, if the conditions are "Poor," there are no waves, or the waves are too high, it's not a good day to surf, and it's better to plan something else.

How does the company forecast surfing conditions? Three key points:

👉 Data Collection.

Information is gathered from ocean buoys, weather stations, and satellites.

👉 Modeling.

Initially, Sean Collins made forecasts based on what he could calculate on paper.

Modern models involve billions of calculations, considering thousands of different variables. These models are constantly improving.

👉 Visualization.

The collected information is translated into "surfer language" and visualized as dashboards on the website and in the app (see screenshot).

This startup is an inspiring example of how data can improve the quality of life. It also shows that work and hobbies can coexist harmoniously when you build a career around your interests.

👨‍💻How to Find a Job When It Seems Impossible?

Especially relevant for beginners.

Job hunting can be compared to a funnel 👆🏻 because the process involves several stages that gradually narrow down from the number of job openings in the market to the number of offers you receive.

You can always manage the funnel at each stage: if you notice problems, adjust your actions.

Few job openings? Expand your search:

👉 Look beyond your usual job sites; explore Telegram channels, other social media, company websites directly, and use networking.
👉 Even if you feel your skills don't perfectly match the job denoscription, apply anyway—sometimes it works out.
👉 Reevaluate your initial criteria. Maybe you need to lower your expectations for now (e.g., location or salary).

Applying to many jobs but getting few interviews? The issue might be your resume:

👉 Tailor your resume to meet the specific job requirements.
👉 If you can't do it on your own, work on your resume with an experienced mentor.

Not getting a second interview after the first one with HR? Analyze your interview:

👉 Review how you answer HR's questions.
👉 Research the company beforehand (how it makes money, who its clients and competitors are); this helps.
👉 Practice on your own or ask a mentor to conduct a mock interview with you.

Failed the technical interview? Analyze the interview:

👉 Identify which topics or tasks were the most challenging.
👉 If possible, ask the employer what specific areas you struggled with during the interview.
👉 Take additional courses or training, and work on practical projects to fill knowledge gaps.
👉 Prepare answers to common questions.
👉 Solve practice problems on free platforms.
👉 Conduct several mock interviews with a mentor.

When job hunting, it's essential to constantly analyze and improve your strategies at each stage. Tracking your conversion rate at each stage can also be helpful.

How does this help?

👉You control the process. You see specific numbers and can influence them (e.g., by improving your resume or changing your job search strategy).
👉Detailing the process helps identify problem areas more effectively.
👉It's easier to track progress at each step, which helps maintain motivation.
👉It helps you realize that rejections are a normal part of the process and that you can influence them.

👋 How Duolingo Succeeded in the Market (And How Analytics Helped)

Duolingo is one of the most popular language learning apps (ranked #1 in app stores). Instead of boring lessons, it feels like a game with progress, levels, rewards, mini-game exercises, and more.

According to the company, around 34 million people use Duolingo every day.

But what’s behind this success?

1. "Test Everything" is a key principle at Duolingo. Constant experiments help the company improve learning and find new ways to grow. At any given moment, Duolingo runs hundreds of A/B tests. They experiment with everything—from small UI changes to major features like leaderboards. They've even built their own A/B testing platform.

➡️Learn about Duolingo’s experiments: article

➡️Example of an A/B test to build a daily learning habit: article

➡️Tools Duolingo uses for data analysis: article

2. Duolingo develops its own metrics to help improve the product. One of the most important metrics is "time spent learning well."

3. In 2018, after several years of consistent year-over-year growth, the DAU metric began to stagnate. To address this issue, the Data Science team developed a "Growth Framework," which helped increase DAU fourfold since 2019.

➡️More on this case: article

4. Motivation to use the app and learn a language may work for speakers of one language but not for speakers of another. Duolingo developed the Expurrimenter, which helps conduct A/B tests on in-app messages to ensure that the messages motivate all learners equally and feel natural to them.

Competition in the data industry is tough, and many people, especially beginners, struggle to find a job.

In this series of posts, I’ll share tips to help you find a job faster.

The first tip:

Be proactive. Don’t limit yourself to just one job board. If you're not finding enough relevant opportunities on one platform, explore others to discover more suitable job listings.

1. Explore Platforms Specializing in Tech Jobs

These sites connect you with employers looking for tech talent, giving you more chances to find the right jobs.

3. Explore Startup Job boards

Startups offer unique chances for growth and innovation and let you work on exciting projects.

4. Dive into Company Websites

Check the websites of companies you admire. You can also search online for lists of companies in any industry and visit their sites. This helps you find potential employers you might not have thought of before.

Many companies post jobs only on their own sites, giving you access to opportunities not found on job boards.

- 53 Data Companies to Know About in 2024

5. Try Growth Job

I built this platform to make your job search easier. We gather the best data jobs from over 100,000 sources and send them straight to your inbox. And here's the cool part – we also catch those hidden vacancies that companies don’t always post on regular job boards.

6. Explore General Job Boards

These platforms provide a broad range of job listings across various fields, including data.

- linkedin.com
- indeed.com

7. Discover Job Boards for Remote Work

If you’re interested in remote opportunities, specialized remote job boards are a must.
