Today, I want to talk about a unique startup that combines data analytics, machine learning, and surfing.
Most of its employees are surfer-data specialists who merge their hobby (surfing) with remote data work.
Surfline is a company founded by American surfer Sean Collins. Its mission is to help surfers catch the perfect waves.
500K+ downloads on Google Play
7M+ visits to the website monthly
I use Surfline myself to check how good the surfing conditions are on any given day. For example, if the conditions are "Poor," there are no waves, or the waves are too high, it's not a good day to surf, and it's better to plan something else.
How does the company forecast surfing conditions? Three key points:
Information is gathered from ocean buoys, weather stations, and satellites.
Initially, Sean Collins made forecasts based on what he could calculate on paper.
Modern models involve billions of calculations, considering thousands of different variables. These models are constantly improving.
The collected information is translated into "surfer language" and visualized as dashboards on the website and in the app (see screenshot).
This startup is an inspiring example of how data can improve the quality of life. It also shows that work and hobbies can coexist harmoniously when you build a career around your interests.

Especially relevant for beginners.
Job hunting can be compared to a funnel 👆🏻 because the process involves several stages that gradually narrow down from the number of job openings in the market to the number of offers you receive.
You can always manage the funnel at each stage: if you notice problems, adjust your actions.
Few job openings? Expand your search:
Applying to many jobs but getting few interviews? The issue might be your resume:
Not getting a second interview after the first one with HR? Analyze your interview:
Failed the technical interview? Analyze the interview:
When job hunting, it's essential to constantly analyze and improve your strategies at each stage. Tracking your conversion rate at each stage can also be helpful.
How does this help?

Duolingo is one of the most popular language learning apps (ranked #1 in app stores). Instead of boring lessons, it feels like a game with progress, levels, rewards, mini-game exercises, and more.
According to the company, around 34 million people use Duolingo every day.
But what’s behind this success?
1. "Test Everything" is a key principle at Duolingo. Constant experiments help the company improve learning and find new ways to grow. At any given moment, Duolingo runs hundreds of A/B tests. They experiment with everything—from small UI changes to major features like leaderboards. They've even built their own A/B testing platform.
2. Duolingo develops its own metrics to help improve the product. One of the most important metrics is "time spent learning well."
3. In 2018, after several years of consistent year-over-year growth, the DAU metric began to stagnate. To address this issue, the Data Science team developed a "Growth Framework," which helped increase DAU fourfold since 2019.
4. Motivation to use the app and learn a language may work for speakers of one language but not for speakers of another. Duolingo developed the Expurrimenter, which helps conduct A/B tests on in-app messages to ensure that the messages motivate all learners equally and feel natural to them.
5. Turning a Free App into a $7.7 Billion Business: video

Duolingo has 700+ employees from 30 countries, with 45% being engineers (including developers and data scientists). Check out their job openings, including internships: careers. Learn about Duolingo’s interview process: article.
