TikTok admits to spying on users
An internal investigation by ByteDance, the parent company of the video-sharing platform, found that employees tracked multiple users, including journalists covering the company, improperly gaining access to their IP addresses and user data in an attempt to track the reporters’ physical movements
This covert surveillance campaign was designed “to unearth the source of leaks inside the company following a drumbeat of stories exposing the company’s ongoing links to China.” The released report is emboldening high-profile enemies of TikTok like Missouri Sen. Josh Hawley, whose bill to ban the service on U.S. govt devices passed in the Senate
The disclosure could add to pressure the platform is facing in Washington from lawmakers and the Biden administration over security concerns about American user data, thus giving free rein to the use of the White House's favorite punitive mechanism using the FBI and prosecution
