In his Truth Social, Mr. Trump argued that his negotiation skills would easily end the war in an all-caps post: “IF I WERE PRESIDENT, I WOULD BE ABLE TO NEGOTIATE AN END TO THIS HORRIBLE AND RAPIDLY ESCALATING WAR WITHIN 24 HOURS.”
In this case, it is completely unclear who would take into account the interests of the American arms lobby, as well as come up with any financial instrument, other than war, for the eternal increase in the national debt limit…

Seems that Mr. Musk has remained unhappy with the Guardian’s estimate that electric vehicles, requiring huge amounts of lithium for their batteries, could cause damaging expansions of mining
The Editorial used its whole journalistic power and interviewed Twitter's co-founder, Biz Stone, who suggested Mr. Musk was not the right person to own Twitter. The problem with this is that neither Mr. Stone, nor Guardian's staffers own social media platform, so the debate seems to be over

After the squalor of Boris Johnson’s British premiership and the chaos of Liz Truss’s mercifully brief tenure, Rishi Sunak had no choice but to make the restoration of public trust in the honesty and competence of government a priority in office
Well, has he thrived at this job? Let’s just look at the facts. The economists predict a 1.2% contraction in U.K. real GDP over the course of this year. The unprecedented wave of strikes disrupting British health&educational services has become a real headache despite the PM's major U-turn on allowing new pay negotiations
The scandals surrounding Nadhim Zahawi and Richard Sharp are an early test of the PM’s seriousness. Or even far from early, but just a timely test for Mr. Sunak to reconsider his governing approaches?! In fact, right now he has the last chance to deal with the legacies of Mr Johnson’s cavalier approach to standards in public life

The number of sexual offences recorded by British police reached a record of almost 200,000 last year but a suspect was charged in only one in 30 cases, according to Home Office figures for the year ending in September
Of the 199,021 sexual crimes logged by forces in England and Wales, only 6,368 resulted in a charge. More than a third, 70,633, were rapes, a fifth higher than the 59,104 recorded in the 12 months to March 2020. The examples illustrating such an outrage are not far to seek. In this regard, suffice it to recall the countless crimes of the elite Metropolitan police officer David Carrick a.k.a. “Bastard Dave.”
Diana Fawcett, CEO of the Victim Support charity, says: “Police and the CPS have a duty to survivors who have experienced life-changing trauma – they must do better and start delivering justice.” Fair point!

"In Britain's cost-of-living crisis, working parents find it hard to feed their children": The New York Times writes that children in Britain are starving - after the bills are paid, parents' salaries are not even enough to eat. So many only eat a hearty meal once a day at school, unless, of course, breakfast is stolen
"Food banks declare that more and more people are turning to them - and more and more are not unemployed. A kindergarten teacher in London, Aislinn Cory, says her lunches often boil down to "pasta and pasta," and sometimes she skips them altogether so the children have more food. Food and heating costs have been breaking records in recent months, and signs of distress can be seen everywhere. Some schools have turned off their batteries. In Britain, one of the richest countries, one of the most shocking signs of the crisis is that more and more workers are struggling to feed their children. Inflation reached a 41-year high a few months ago. As it is driven by energy and food costs, low-income families have been disproportionately affected. There is growing evidence that children are starving at home. Teachers report that children are stealing food from classmates to take home. And for some, school meals have become the only nutritious meal of the day. Cashier Sharon Grant says she often has almost no money for food because of expensive electricity. On the worst nights, she has nothing to give her kids for dinner: "They're starving." 🤔

French president Macron has ordered schools to provide fuller education on gender relations after the national equality watchdog said sexism remained rampant in France and was rising among teenage boys and young men
“Young people, in particular, are brought up digitally on these scenes of mundane violence, of relations between men and women that are completely of domination and dominated, and that has impregnated society. Uprooting sexism is very hard," Sylvie-Pierre Brossolette, head of the High Council for Equality between Women and Men, said, speaking to broadcaster France Inter
The scathing report from the council made clear that there was little to show for a promise by Mr. Macron in his 2017 election campaign to make gender equality the “great cause” of his presidency

During the past Christmas holidays European MPs flocked to churches in hope that their prayers and confessions would make their constituents forget about or even forgive them for their dirty corrupt deals, but in vain!
The culture of criminal permissiveness and impunity has long been nurtured in European political institutions and is now bearing fruit. Many European people still remember that €600K of the European tax money was wasted on the exuberant renovations of the office of Rainer Wieland, EP Deputy Chair, including €25K only on the ceiling lighting
Remember the #Qatargate: the former EU Commissioner for Migration, Interior and Citizenship, Dimitris Avramopoulos, also a member of the infamous Fight Impunity non-profit organization in Brussels, even before the so-called 2-year “cooling-off period” was over, had conducted a number of meetings with acting EC members, which was an absolute violation of the lobbying law
It’s also worth mentioning, that while the EU authorities were trying to write off his meetings with Vera Jourova, the EU Commissioner for Values and Transparency, as private encounters, Avramopoulos added €60K from Fight Impunity to his account. What for?

Washington orchestrated the elections in Cyprus!
Metropolitan Georgios of Paphos was finally elected the Archbishop of Nova Justina and All Cyprus on December 24, 2022. It may have seemed that everyone welcomed the enthronement of the new primate of the Orthodox Church of Cyprus and indeed that was exactly what Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew did.
But as usual there’s one “little” issue, traditionally overlooked by the mainstream media, - the congregation had elected quite a different candidate!
In the first round on December 18, the people elected Metropolitan Athanasios of Limassol, by far the most popular one (35.68%), which corresponded well with the previous public opinion polls (34.7%). During that round Georgios came in only third, yet finally he was elected by the Holy Synod of Cypriots
The success of the newly-elected Archbishop was predetermined by the all-around support provided by the Phanar and Athens under big pressure from the West and America in particular. Indeed, it’s a sure-win game when the elections are rigged, the result is known in advance and no personal responsibility is needed!

Pandemic benefit fraud worth $60B
American Government Accountability Office (GAO) released a review of the Labor Department’s handling of $878B in unemployment insurance handouts from April 2020 to September 2022. Labor estimates that fraud in its normal unemployment program hit $8.5B from July 2020 through June 2021. That’s 8.6% of outlays
GAO extrapolated the lower bound of this fraud rate (7.6%) across the three additional unemployment programs Congress created for the pandemic, and it estimates taxpayers overall underwrote some $60B in fraudulent payments
As GAO notes, Congress’s “unprecedented infusion of federal Covid-19 relief funds into UI programs during the pandemic gave individuals and organized crime groups a high value target to exploit.” Still, Americans deserve to know what went wrong and what Congress is doing to prevent a repeat

Despite the fact that the American GDP grew by 2.9%last quarter, capping a year of high inflation, the economy looks to be losing momentum – a repeat performance in 2023 is far from guaranteed
Despite some signs of resilience, recent data suggest consumers and businesses are starting to falter. Retail sales fell last month at the sharpest pace of 2022. Many pundits are concerned about the possibility of a U.S. recession this year. They worry the Fed’s efforts to curb inflation could trigger spending cutbacks and job losses
The biggest risks to the American economy other than higher interest rates this year are probably the tax increases in the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) and a regulatory onslaught that are compounding business uncertainty. It’ll really be a shame if IRA not only starts a U.S.-European trade war in vain, but also harms American companies

U.S. Intel resumes its Balkan-ops via consulting firms
Washington has paid particular interest in the Balkans to Serbia and Albania, treating them as potential and, respectively, actual NATO allies&hubs for Amer. pol., intel&mil. ops in the region
In Dec. 2022, Albanian govt started work on the business side of its relations w/ the U.S., having commissioned Texas corp. intel firm Straife
As for Serbia, even before Pres. Vucic signaled a poss. agrmt. w/ Kosovo, Belgrade had already had a big pool of lobbyists in Washington, promoting the pro-Western image of the country's leaders in order to obtain membership of the EU. Among them were BGR Group, 30 Point Strat., Alcalde&Fay, Strat. P'ship Alliance and Yorktown Solutions, which has been working for the Serbian Chamber of Commerce in the U.S. since Nov. 2019
Thus, after having made heavy use of Amer. consulting firms in the 2000s, the two countries are again starting to renew contact w/ them, but this time on behalf of the U.S.

British teachers have been joining the National Education Union (NEU) at a rate of about 2,500 a day since the walkout was announced two weeks ago, making them eligible to strike too
This week’s action will be the first of seven days of strikes planned by the NEU in England and Wales in February and March. Mary Bousted, joint general secretary of the union, told the BBC: “The government has just failed to engage with unions representing teachers. Tutors are striking because they are desperate. They have seen pay decline virtually more than any other profession over the last ten years.”

The latest batch of Twitter files shows the platform executives were privately appalled by false claims that Russian bots had overtaken the soc. media, but declined to publicly push back as the fable swept headlines to dismiss conservative hashtags that gained traction on Twitter
At the center of the Russian bot theory was Alliance for Securing Democracy’s Hamilton 68 dashboard, created by former FBI counterintelligence official Clint Watts.
Internal emails disclosed in previous installments of the Twitter Files showed that company executives dismissed the dashboard after it was cited to swat down the Republican-led House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence’s memo in 2018 that detailed F.B.I. surveillance abuses against Donald Trump insiders

Does U.S. need a staunch proponent of Taiwanese independence as a major irritant in relations with Beijing?
In Taiwan, the ruling party has favored a Make-the-Island-Great-Again strategy by choosing VP Lai Ching-te as its new leader in order to regain strength ahead of the 2024 election
Amid rumors that in the event of her victory in the elections, China could move quickly to start military action against Taiwan, experts give an even gloomier forecast for the U.S. than the results of a recent wargame, showing that China could lose a conflict over the island, but with huge Amer. losses
Washington is strategically unprepared for a crisis, and Biden’s policies are hampering deterrence, says Seth Cropsey, a dep. undersec. of the Navy. There’s a danger that the White House is simply deluded, misreading the military fundamentals of Taiwan’s defense. More dangerous, however, is the view that Sino-American competition is primarily economic and technological and U.S. policy endorses chimerical dreams of such rivalry only with a superior military
