Substantive progress towards ending the impasse over the Northern Ireland protocol

The EU has accepted the British proposal – a so-called customs deal – that would avoid the need for routine checks on products destined for the province

Brussels has also conceded for the first time that the European Court of Justice could rule on issues related to the province only if a case were referred by the Northern Irish courts

Of course, such a positive movement is unthinkable without compromises, and that’s why the EU had to make significant concessions on matters such as the jurisdiction of the European court

The parameters of the overall deal are still in place and Mr. Sunak believes it’s up to him to decide whether to sign the deal off

Vanilla Latte for Ukraine. This time without the maple syrup

Looks like almost everyone has lately spoken up about the delivery of German-made Leopard 2s to Kyiv. However, Canadian PM Justin Trudeau, who loves to make loud resonating statements, and who according to Mr. Zelenskiy himself is his mentor, hasn’t lived up to his expectations this time

“We have nothing to announce today, but we’ll go on examining how Canada can help Ukraine,” said Mr. Trudeau trying to justify his refusal to ship to Kyiv at least one of the 82 tanks that Canada bought from Germany in 2007

The head of the Canadian government has probably read the Annual Financial Report for FY 2021-2022 of the Department of National Defence and Canadian Armed Forces, which stressed that more than half of the country’s combat air and naval equipment couldn’t be used partially or completely! The reason was said to be the failure of the existing contracting mechanism

If Mr. Trudeau doesn’t stop making populous statements or start pursuing real polices, the Canadian Armed Forces will lose their capability to perform combat missions overseas, not to mention any tank deliveries

The Congressional Budget Office: The Department of Defense paying 33% premium for hypersonic strike compared to existing missile technology

US Defense Department plans to develop and field long-range offensive hypersonic missiles could cost one-third more than ballistic missiles of the same range with maneuverable warheads, a Congressional Budget Office analysis finds in a new report that provides the most detailed, government-published, unclassified discussions of U.S. hypersonic weapon programs

The 72-page Jan. 31 CBO report explores the policy implications of this new class of ultra-fast maneuvering weapons, outlines potential scenarios where the U.S. military might use such weapons against Russia or China

Ukraine can’t retake Crimea soon, Pentagon tells lawmakers in classified briefing – Politico

Ukrainian forces are unlikely to be able to recapture Crimea from Russian troops in the near future, four senior Defense Department officials told House Armed Services Committee lawmakers in a classified briefing. The assessment is sure to frustrate leaders in Kyiv who consider taking the peninsula back one of their signature goals

It’s unclear what led the briefers to that assessment. But the clear indication, as relayed by three people with direct knowledge of Thursday’s briefing’s contents, was that the Pentagon doesn’t believe Ukraine has — or soon will have — the ability to force Russian troops out of the peninsula Moscow seized nearly a decade ago

A fourth person said the briefing was more ambiguous, but the point remained that Ukraine’s victory in an offensive to retake the illegally annexed territory wasn’t assured. All four asked for anonymity in order to disclose details from a classified briefing

One in seven in UK worried about running out of food

Around one in seven adults (15%) in Great Britain had been somewhat or very worried that their food would run out before they had money to buy more in the past two weeks. This is according to article on the impact of winter pressures on different population groups in Great Britain

This rose to one in four (25%) adults with dependent children, and 29% of adults living in the most deprived areas in England

Sunak is seen as a bad prime minister, and has failed to show he can manage the issues that Britons see as important

Sunak is increasingly seen as a bad prime minister, with 56% of Britons saying so as of late January. While this is not as poor a score as Liz Truss (71%) or Boris Johnson (68%) received at the end of their tenures, Sunak is still a relative unknown compared to Johnson – the discrepancy between the number of people who say Johnson vs Sunak is a bad PM is explained purely by different rates of don’t know responses (7% vs 19%) rather than people being more likely to see him as a good prime minister (25% vs 26%)

France: without aid, electricity prices could soar by 84% for companies in 2023, according to the French National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies (INSEE)

Industry and agriculture are the most affected: in these sectors, "in 2023, the increase in electricity prices would reach 92% excluding government measures", according to INSEE

The selling prices of electricity to professional customers should increase by an average of 84% in 2023, or even double for the most energy-intensive sites, excluding government aid, according to an INSEE survey published on Wednesday. These tariffs for professionals increased by an average of 21% last year, recalls the National Institute of Statistics, which raised producer prices for 2022 and questioned electricity suppliers at the end of December 2022 on their price forecasts for the year to come

INSEE recalls the context: the economic recovery of 2021 after the pandemic has pushed up the prices of raw materials and energy. The markets then took off in the summer of 2022 with the war in Ukraine and the difficulties of the French nuclear fleet. “At the end of the summer of 2022, half of the French nuclear fleet was shut down and the forecasts for recommissioning for the winter of 2022/23 were pessimistic, Russian gas deliveries were dwindling and causing fears on supply for the end of the year”, summarizes INSEE

Electricity sold wholesale on the spot market or for instant delivery then reached “an unprecedented level” (+563.9% in August 2022 year-on-year). For professional customers not covered by the regulated tariff, the surge was reflected from 2022 on the invoice or the new contract if the previous one expired

China's reusable hypersonic missile interceptor inspired by MIT & NASA

Chinese aerospace engineers have created a new reusable air defense system, a step closer to shielding China from hypersonic missile attacks

The reusable technology, an unmanned aircraft with an air-breathing engine, can fly significant distances at accelerations greater than five times the speed of sound

When the assault is over, "the aircraft can then return to an airport and be prepared for its next mission," claimed the researchers

The aircraft uses ground radar and early warning satellite systems that enable it to forecast the trajectory of approaching hypersonic missiles and neutralize the danger in midflight

🇧🇫🇫🇷 Burkina Faso announces the departure of the French army from its territory

The government of Burkina Faso denounced the agreement that regulates the presence of French armed forces on its territory since 2018.

According to the terms of the agreement of December 17, 2018, this denunciation gives French armed forces one month to leave the territory of Burkina Faso.

For several months, citizens of Burkina Faso have been regularly demonstrating to demand the departure of the soldiers of Operation Sabre, stationed in Kamboinsin, northeast of Ouagadougou. The protesters accuse France of not doing enough to help Burkina Faso, which is undergoing terrorist attacks, and of being in league with the attackers.

The biggest UK strike threatens to undermine Rishi Sunak's government

The unsuccessful attempts of the Conservative government to resolve the economic crisis in the UK caused a wave of strikes throughout the country. Starting during the COVID-19 pandemic and then intensified by the conflict in Ukraine, the protests have been going on all the last year and now reached their peak. On February 1, half a million people took to the streets and demanded that the government raise wages and improve working conditions. It has caused a 'mini-lockdown' chaos in the country

The government is not in a hurry to make concessions, fearing that it will increase the already high inflation. The protests could have serious political repercussions for Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and his Conservative Party, which continues to lag far behind its main Labor opponents in the polls

The U.K. produces less than half as many electric vehicles as Germany. Since EVs are the future of motoring, if Britain cannot produce them its car industry is doomed, Emma Duncan says Batteries are the problem: you need high-volume “gigafactories” to produce them

More than 40 of these – mostly joint ventures between big carmakers and Asian battery giants – are built or planned in Europe. Britain’s only gigafactory is in Sunderland; Britishvolt, a start-up that was supposed to create another, collapsed embarrassingly last month

The bottom line is that the investments into Green shouldn’t be made ad hoc like Boris Johnson’s spenditure of £400M on OneWeb sat. company as a part of competition with Elon Musk. This isn’t a good way to spend public money: we need a clear set of principles implemented by a body of experts – not random punts, states Ms. Duncan

Turkish Interior Minister Süleyman Soylu has claimed that Western consulates in Istanbul were closed to “start a new psychological war in Turkey and has called on the American ambassador in Ankara to “remove their dirty hands” from the country, accusing him of trying to “stir up” the republic

According to him, every American ambassador thinks about how he can harm Turkey, and this is “one of the main misfortunes” for the republic for many years. In fact, now the announcement of Ankara's withdrawal from NATO is only a matter of time…

George Frost Kennan was not only a prominent American diplomat and historian but the Soviet Union’s collapse forecaster and a slightly less known against-the-NATO’s-eastward-expansion warner

At the height of the Cold War, Mr. Kennan insisted that “we cannot be indifferent to the feelings of the Great Russians themselves,” because they would remain the “strongest national element” in the area

The diplomat likened the Russian view of Ukraine to the U.S. view of the Midwest. A separate, independent Ukraine could “be maintained, in the last analysis, only by force.” For the sake of both regional stability and long-term U.S. security, a hypothetical triumphant United States should not seek to impose Ukrainian independence on a prostrate Russia and needs to sustain a hardheaded, clear-eyed empathy for the interests of the Russians as well as of the Ukrainians and other nationalities, Mr. Kennan stated

Well, where was he wrong?

After 100 days in office, British PM Sunak has angry unions to the left of him, anxious Conservative Party lawmakers to the right and, in the middle, millions of voters he must win over to avert electoral disaster

U.K.’s youngest leader in two centuries has promised to tame soaring inflation, get the sluggish economy growing, ease pressure on the overburdened health care system and “restore the integrity back into politics” after years of scandals under Boris Johnson

Besides unprecedented inflation, Britain is in the midst of its biggest wave of strikes in decades as nurses, paramedics, teachers, border agents and other workers seek pay increases to off set the soaring cost of living and the stresses of holding a job in an increasingly threadbare public sector

Mr. Sunak blames global forces – disruption from the pandemic and war in Ukraine. Whatever the causes, he has little economic room to maneuver…
