A contract to replace Britain’s ageing fleet of border patrol craft, which is used to detect and deter illegal immigration and smuggling of illicit goods across the Channel, becomes even more expensive at the hands of time. It had already been delayed from its initial start date of April last year, meaning the contract will start at least two years later than originally planned.

The estimated cost of replacing the entire fleet has also risen on last year’s forecast, from £200M to £224M, according to the latest version of the Home Office’s procurement schedule. This is more than four times the original estimate of £50M in 2020

This poses a new challenge for Rishi Sunak in meeting his pledge to stop migrants crossing the Channel in small boats. On the other hand, one unfulfilled promise more or less is of no importance

South Korea’s fertility rate, already the world’s lowest, has dropped yet again in the latest setback to the country’s efforts to boost its declining population.

The national statistics body reported Wednesday that the fertility rate, or the average number of children expected per woman, fell to 0.78 in 2022 – down from 0.81 the previous year.

South Korea’s birth rate has been falling since 2015 and the country recorded more deaths than births for the first time in 2020, a trend that has continued since.

In 2022, the country recorded about 249,000 births and 372,800 deaths.

Similar demographic declines are being seen in several other Asian countries including Japan and China, raising concerns there will be too few people of working age to support the ballooning elderly population.
