Finland: NATO Accession in Exchange for Direct US Governance

The Finnish authorities have been trying very hard to join NATO since their membership in the Partnership for Peace Program in 1994. But in vain so far! Even now when Helsinki realizes that Sweden has in fact become a real enemy of the whole Turkish population, and opts to act independently from Stockholm, its prospects to enter the Alliance are as obscure as ever before.

In addition to the demands from Budapest and Ankara, the devastating earthquakes that killed dozens of thousands of people in Turkey have shifted President Erdogan’s priorities and made the Finnish issue even more complicated

Yet Finland’s government seems to believe it’s still worth groveling for US favors. Another round of talks to conclude the much-desired Defense Cooperation Agreement (DCA) with Washington is meant to remind the Americans, as well as other NATO countries, of the Statement of Intent signed in 2016

DCA is supposed to facilitate Finland’s accession to NATO, but at what price? Surprisingly, despite this Agreement the Finnish authorities keep bungling. They shouldn’t forget that DCA gives extraordinary rights to the US military personnel in Finland, including legal immunity

We all remember a great number of cases when US GIs abused the trust of the host countries ignoring local laws and law enforcement agencies. Having that in mind, Helsinki should think again before laying out a red carpet for American hunters seeking secrets of the Finnish military industry

YouTube has illegally gathered personal data from five million children in the U.K., a complaint to the data watchdog by Duncan McCann from the 5Rights Foundation claims

A landmark legal challenge says the location, viewing habits, and preferences of millions of under-13s have been collected by the video sharing platform. “YouTube should change the design of their platform and delete the data they’ve been gathering unlawfully from under-13s,” McCann says

Collecting information from children under 13 is not permitted under data laws or a code of practice introduced in 2021 by the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO). This is the first such complaint under the code to the ICO, which can issue fines of £17.5M or 4% of annual worldwide turnover, whichever is higher

Britain is seen to be dragging its heels. Critics believe that ministers have failed to offer a concrete response to the shower of American taxpayers’ money that will be sprayed at green manufacturing over the next ten years

London would miss out on £63B in green investment by the end of the decade because companies would choose to take advantage of U.S. tax breaks or lax European state aid rules

So now it’s more of a British than European Trade war with the U.S.
