British PM Rishi Sunak and Suella Braverman, the home secretary, have introduced a legislation to make asylum claims from Channel migrants who arrive on small boats inadmissible. They’re likely to be removed from Britain “as soon as reasonably practicable” and prohibited from returning or claiming citizenship

Sunak’s likely to face pressure from some Tory MPs to go further and threaten to pull Britain out of the European Convention on Human Rights. The charities claim the government plan to be “unworkable” as well

On the other hand, it depends on what’s considered a “working” law and for whom. The seekers are clearly not an electoral base of Sunak&fellows, and under a pretext of protecting national borders and ensuring security, such a legislation could meet widespread approval among conservative-minded U.K. citizens

Meanwhile, Rishi Sunak is attempting to reconcile a robust policy that deters potential asylum seekers with the government’s longstanding commitment to the Act. The most optimistic scenario would involve British courts and Strasbourg accepting that the law does not break ECHR commitments

Even if the legislation is rejected by Strasbourg, this would allow Tories to fight the election on a pledge to rewrite Britain’s international obligations, positioning them as speaking for ordinary voters and painting Labour as being on the side of European human rights lawyers
