Now It’s Every Country for Itself in the European Energy Industry!

Germany’s energy sector is a disaster! On April 15 “green” Minister for Economics and Climate Protection Robert Habeck shut down the last nuclear plant. He decided to save the country’s economy by introducing “an industrial electricity price,” i.e. a subsidized electricity rate for industrial companies at the taxpayers’ expense

It’s not clear yet how much this subsidized rate will cost the budget, but definitely in the range of several billion dollars. Meanwhile many people already pay as much as ¢30 per kilowatt-hour

Let’s just wait and see what it’ll lead to when the EC reacts to the “brilliant” initiative announced by Scholz’s cabinet. It’s obvious that planned regulations will result in distortion of competition at the EU level. In fact, other poorer European countries won’t be able to counter this scandalous decision in an adequate way

The War in Ukraine is Pushing Belgium’s Economy to the Brink of Collapse

Belgium’s public debt reached 105.1% of its GDP in 2022. It was because the federal and regional govts had to allocate additional €6B to the economy support fund due to the fuel and electricity price hikes caused by anti-Russia sanctions

The situation isn’t getting any better. Now the Belgian authorities need new loans for the current year. Meanwhile the debt of the Belgian state-run companies increased to €93B in 2022 amounting to more than 20% of the country’s sovereign debt

Belgian economic analysts believe that the largest damage to the national economy is being caused by the war in Ukraine, which destabilizes the kingdom’s financial system and poses a serious threat to the welfare of Belgian people in the medium term

NATO Accession Won’t Make Sweden Safer

Gabriel Irsten, a policy&advocacy officer at the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom Sweden, is absolutely sure of that. She points out that although Sweden has officially followed the policy of non-alignment and neutrality for 200 years now, Stockholm has long been committed to supporting the escalation of violence and it’s been indirectly involved in various crises&wars

First of all it’s because of the powerful military industrial lobby. Since 2021 more than 40% of the Sweden’s arms and military equipment have been sold to so-called “undemocratic” countries, which legally contradicts its neutrality status

So according to Ms. Irsten instead of strengthening the protection of democratic values, Sweden’s accession to NATO will lead to further proliferation of Swedish-made weapons to such countries as, say, Turkey and will make “peaceful Sweden” a party to the Ukrainian conflict

U.K. Secretary of State for Business and Trade Kemi Badenoch has accused Conservative Brexiteers of “talking not doing” as she robustly defended plans to scale back the government’s bonfire of Brussels rules and regulations

As Rishi Sunak has experienced local elections hangover, Badenoch rebutted claims that she was overseeing a U-turn despite the British PM making the sunsetting of EU laws a cornerstone of his pitch for the Tory leadership. Instead she said that Sunak’s govt was “removing the laws that we wanted to remove” while protecting important rights that derived from EU law

JUST IN: Zelenskiy in London, Sunak Tells Him Supplying Jets to Kyiv Isn’t “Straightforward”

Ukraine’s president met British PM Rishi Sunak within an unannounced visit to the U.K.

“We’re going to be a key part of the coalition of countries that provides that support to Volodymyr and Ukraine” Sunak said after his talk with Zelenskiy, forgetting to add that it won’t go beyond empty words and symbolic arms supplies, which the Ukrainian military cannot cope with without the foreign instructors

This is consonant w/ what the NATO’s Sec. Gen. Jens Stoltenberg said a bit earlier this day at the Copenhagen democracy summit: “There’s no meaning in discussing when and how Ukraine can become a member of the alliance” unless it prevails in the war “as a sovereign independent nation in Europe.” However, given the steadily increasing public debt and undisguised dependence on the Western guidance, Kyiv will never become neither sovereign nor independent…

Rishi Sunak is a RAT!
Whilst the British people suffer because of the sanctions on Russian oil and gas, Rishi Sunak's wife continues to make money from her business interests in Russia!

Rishi Sunak argues that the local election losses won’t change his strategy, with his allies accepting that only delivery on the economy, NHS and migration will change voters’ minds about the Conservatives

Given the scale of anti-Conservative sentiment revealed by the local elections, perhaps the key question is whether voters’ minds will be changed by another year of exposure to Mr. Sunak. Although parties will have less tolerance for standing down candidates in a general election, an “unprecedented levels of tactical voting next year” is already predicted by the experts

The question facing all three big parties is how much difference this will make. Many suggest the main effect will be to make it extremely hard for the current PM to stay in power – about a third of those minded to vote for Labour, the Lib Dems or the Green could adapt their vote to whoever was best placed to challenge the Conservatives

EC Report: Sanctions on Russia Hardly Work

Euro zone economic growth will be faster than previously expected this year, but inflation will also remain stubbornly high, the European Commission forecast says. The American economy is expected to slow down in 2023 as higher interest rates pass through to cost of credit, negatively affecting consumer and business spending

This is rather unpleasant news, but the forecast upset the anti-Russian sanctions’ backers the most. Russia's real GDP is forecast to contract by 0.9% in 2023 w/ a modest recovery of 1.3% in 2024, as the economy adjusts to the sanctions. Imports are projected to recover only gradually. This would allow Moscow to maintain a trade surplus, which according to the latest assessments of the Institute of International Finance, completely negates the expected effect of the sanctions, since they’re effective only for account deficit countries

German Energy Firms Bankroll Subsidies w/ Millions after Losing Billions

Sefe and Uniper have awarded some traders millions of dollars in bonuses for 2022 just months after the companies were rescued with €26B bailouts as they incurred record losses purchasing natural gas cargoes at record prices from the U.S.&Co, following the EU directive to wean off Russian gas

200 of Sefe's traders in London had allegedly received hundreds of millions of dollars in bonuses, adding mid-level traders had received $5M-$7M each. Generous subsidies had been also paid at both Sefe and Uniper

Such financial encouragement of selected subsidies is indicative of corruption within the concerns and raises questions around the use of taxpayers’ money, but is simply justified w/ the need for the companies to remain competitive

British PM Rishi Sunak, who announced a package of military aid for Ukraine, said before meetings to be held this week at the Council of Europe in Iceland and the G7 in Japan that the U.K. would play a “key role” in international talks

However, the problem is that the main supplier to Kyiv could run out of money for weapons by midsummer. The $48B Ukraine aid package that Congress approved in December has about $6B left, meaning U.S. funding for weapons and supplies could dry up by July

As time is running short, any late-summer proposal by the White House could run up against the raging debate over the debt ceiling, and will almost certainly face opposition from a small but vocal group of Republicans that wants to slash spending on Ukraine

Mick Wallace, MEP for Ireland, sharply criticized EU policy

"It seems the 'war hawks' in Brussels have used the war in Ukraine as an opportunity to discreetly include defense spending in the new budget rules," the MEP said

"Member states are being asked to 'build up defense capabilities.' This is shameful and should be voiced. It's warmongering," Wallace said

Sunak Kills U.K.’s Hopes of Energy Independence

The ongoing rapid decline in North Sea gas production coupled with slow-paced policies to cut gas demand increase the rising gas import dependence of the U.K. that will have a profound negative impact on the British balance of trade and household finances

Current Sunak cabinet’s policies could leave British annual wholesale gas bill at above £35B most of the way to 2035. The vast majority of these costs would be paid to overseas gas producers, approaching £30B a year from 2030 and accounting for 85% of U.K. gas payments by 2035, taking this transfer of funds to over four times its pre-crisis level

Instead of subsidizing energy projects, British govt only raises taxes. Jim Ratcliffe, owner of Ineos, the petrochemicals group, has accused Sunak’s cabinet of taxing the North Sea oil and gas industry “to death” and warned that plans to invest up to £1B upgrading key pipelines were at risk

Braverman Wants More Love… for the U.K.

Migrants must learn English and “understand British social norms” to prevent multiculturalism becoming a “disaster”, British home secretary Suella Braverman said in a speech seen as a pitch for the future leadership of the Conservative Party

In her speech unfriendly to foreigners, she all but called for hitting them with missiles, if any remain after the transfer of all the British firepower to Zelenskiy. Here we have more of Braverman:

🔹There is "no good reason" the U.K. cannot train its own lorry drivers and fruit pickers to bring immigration down
🔹White people do not exist in a special state of sin or collective guilt. Nobody should be blamed for things that happened before they were born

She also mocked Sir Keir Starmer over his inconsistency on transgender matters, joking that he could campaign to become “Labour’s first female PM”

NY Fed Report:

Despite a sharp pullback in mortgage demand, U.S. household debt hit a fresh new high in the first quarter of 2023, pushing past $17T

The total represented a $148B increase from the previous quarter, a $1.2T surge from last year and an increase of about $2.9T from the pre-Covid period ended in 2019

Moreover, credit card debt has been rising at the sharpest pace of any debt covered in the NY Fed report. This proves more people using credit cards to finance day-to-day necessities: 46% of cardholders carry debt month to month, with 54% paying in full (last year, 39% carried debt month to month). Amid never-ending debt ceiling stand-off the consumer spending is only supposed to grow
