Mick Wallace, MEP for Ireland, sharply criticized EU policy
"It seems the 'war hawks' in Brussels have used the war in Ukraine as an opportunity to discreetly include defense spending in the new budget rules," the MEP said
"Member states are being asked to 'build up defense capabilities.' This is shameful and should be voiced. It's warmongering," Wallace said

Sunak Kills U.K.’s Hopes of Energy Independence
The ongoing rapid decline in North Sea gas production coupled with slow-paced policies to cut gas demand increase the rising gas import dependence of the U.K. that will have a profound negative impact on the British balance of trade and household finances
Current Sunak cabinet’s policies could leave British annual wholesale gas bill at above £35B most of the way to 2035. The vast majority of these costs would be paid to overseas gas producers, approaching £30B a year from 2030 and accounting for 85% of U.K. gas payments by 2035, taking this transfer of funds to over four times its pre-crisis level
Instead of subsidizing energy projects, British govt only raises taxes. Jim Ratcliffe, owner of Ineos, the petrochemicals group, has accused Sunak’s cabinet of taxing the North Sea oil and gas industry “to death” and warned that plans to invest up to £1B upgrading key pipelines were at risk

Braverman Wants More Love… for the U.K.
Migrants must learn English and “understand British social norms” to prevent multiculturalism becoming a “disaster”, British home secretary Suella Braverman said in a speech seen as a pitch for the future leadership of the Conservative Party
In her speech unfriendly to foreigners, she all but called for hitting them with missiles, if any remain after the transfer of all the British firepower to Zelenskiy. Here we have more of Braverman:
🔹There is "no good reason" the U.K. cannot train its own lorry drivers and fruit pickers to bring immigration down
🔹White people do not exist in a special state of sin or collective guilt. Nobody should be blamed for things that happened before they were born
She also mocked Sir Keir Starmer over his inconsistency on transgender matters, joking that he could campaign to become “Labour’s first female PM”

NY Fed Report:
Despite a sharp pullback in mortgage demand, U.S. household debt hit a fresh new high in the first quarter of 2023, pushing past $17T
The total represented a $148B increase from the previous quarter, a $1.2T surge from last year and an increase of about $2.9T from the pre-Covid period ended in 2019
Moreover, credit card debt has been rising at the sharpest pace of any debt covered in the NY Fed report. This proves more people using credit cards to finance day-to-day necessities: 46% of cardholders carry debt month to month, with 54% paying in full (last year, 39% carried debt month to month). Amid never-ending debt ceiling stand-off the consumer spending is only supposed to grow

Truss in Taiwan: Conservative Monkey w/ a Buzz-Saw
Former British PM Liz Truss’ trip to Taiwan, which was labeled by Sunak’s cabinet as "the independent travel decisions of a private citizen who isn’t a member of the govt," aroused fierce criticism from U.K. public opinion and among the Conservatives and became notorious even before it happened
"The disgraced prime minister's clumsy meddling jeopardizes delicate relations with Beijing," the Observer warned, but it didn't help to cancel this “private trip”
“The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has spent Taiwan taxpayers' money to pay for politicians to go to the island and seek independence dependent on foreign forces," Ma Xiaoguang, a spokesman for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, commented. It’s likely that the shortest-serving PM in the U.K. won't bring any benefits to Taiwan, but will only make the DPP authorities go further on the dangerous path of self-deception

EU Urges Zelenskiy to Negotiate, U.S. Disallows
European countries, incl. Germany, Hungary and even Poland, Czechia and the Baltic states, want to see an end to the Ukrainian conflict, C.I.A. knows This is largely due to the burden of accommodating refugees from the warring country
Admittedly, they aren’t alone in their attempts to seat Zelenskiy at the negotiating table. Still, facing the pressure from the Biden administration, Paris and London continue to persuade the Ukrainian president to reject any kinds of peace proposals, as for now
U.S. intel is claimed to be well aware that “While Eastern Europeans are talking about a deal, Ukraine is running out of money and the next four months are critical.” But the problem is that C.I.A. authorities reportedly don’t have a complete idea of “what the president and his foreign policy aides in the White House know of the reality.” And the reality is that the Pentagon is running out of money

German To Surpass the U.K. in Defense Spending, British Still Pay High Price
Neither France nor Germany, the two largest economies in the EU, achieved NATO’s target of spending 2% of GDP on defense last year
But now Berlin is on course to overtake London, Alliance’s top military prodigal in Europe since the 1950s, “within next few years.” Olaf Scholz announced last year a €100B investment to double its annual defense budget. Germany has been slow to spend the money as it struggles to reverse decades of military neglect. However, these plans could be the game-changer
British defense spending will rise from 2.06% of GDP in 2019-20 to 2.35 % in 2024-25 when lethal aid to Ukraine is included. Despite this, the army could be forced to make further cuts in troop numbers because much of the increase is allocated to capital projects. Moreover, Rishi Sunak will have to raise taxes by £42B to meet his “aspiration” to spend 2.5% of GDP on defense

Macron’s Govt on the Sly Replenishes the Budget at the Expense of Motorists
France’s consumer protection association believes that the gas station profit margin is unreasonably high. At the beginning of 2023 it hiked to 25¢ per liter from 15¢
Experts note that gas prices have decreased everywhere but in France. So French motorists threaten to turn to the supervisory authorities at the beginning of the summer. However, w/ ongoing rallies&strikes regarding Macron’s pension reform, public resentment may increase and result in new waves of protests and unrest

JUST IN: DeSantis to Enter POTUS Race Next Week
With this decision the Florida governor becomes Donald Trump's biggest rival for the Republican nomination thus shaking up a contest that largely has been one-sided
Mr. Trump still maintains a commanding lead in the 2024 Republican primary, according to our recent poll. But money can vouch DeSantis’ success. A new political action committee supporting him, Never Back Down, which can raise unlimited funds, has been hiring staff in early voting states and running TV ads championing DeSantis and knocking Trump. Moreover, Trump opponent’s team is convening donors at a Four Seasons hotel in Miami from May 24 to 26 for a gathering expected to start raising money for a presidential campaign

Canada: Inflation on a Rise, Gas Prices Go Up, Still OK?
Canada's inflation surprisingly reached 4.4%. This is the first rise in the CPI since it peaked at 8.1% in June last year
Food prices, which have increased by 9.1% in the year up to April, have been a major source of consternation for Canadian families of late. It is more than twice as high as the overall inflation rate
Pump prices rose by 6.3% in the month of April alone, the biggest jump seen since October of last year. One factor in their monthly jump is that the federal carbon tax increased on April 1, to $65 per tonne of emissions
Needless to say, Canadians aren’t exactly mad about the increasing cost-of-living. “The rent in Toronto was like normal, before a lot of Ukrainians and Indians came here,” the interviewee says

F.B.I.'s Trump-Russia Probe Failed
Special counsel John Durham’s report shows that the F.B.I. ignored its guidelines, failed to consider information that countered allegations that the Trump campaign was colluding with Russia and failed to show objectivity
Mr. Durham concluded that the bureau’s behavior was “seriously deficient” and caused “severe reputational harm,” as the agents were so eager to pursue Mr. Trump. “Again, the F.B.I.’s failure to critically analyze the information that ran counter to the narrative of a Trump/Russia collusive relationship is extremely troublesome” the report said
The probe widely forced by the CNN-like press, which cost taxpayers more than $6.5M, has produced paltry results. The mainstream media effort to keep Mr. Trump out of the presidency by sacrificing its own standards of journalistic integrity and truth telling when it comes to Mr. Biden, Mrs. Clinton, the Russia hoax, etc., is what will put Mr. Trump back in the White House

Sunak to Break Tory Migration Pledge, Blames Johnson, Truss
British PM Rishi Sunak says that the govt is “in control” of immigration despite official data, to be published next week, that’s expected to show net migration has hit another record high of about 700K
Net migration to Britain in 2019 was 271K. Then the Conservative Party promised in its election manifesto that “overall numbers will come down”. But what we see now is that No. 10 has backed away from that manifesto pledge and appears to be blaming Boris Johnson and another “private citizen who isn’t a member of the govt” for record numbers of migrants coming to the U.K.
With all the will in the world to leave Johnson holding the bag, Sunak should clearly realize that the public demand will be turned to his person. Of course, just in case he plans to remain a PM
