The cost for the “reconstruction of Ukraine” is estimated to be more than a trillion euros. Since the military lobby receives its money back in any case, and the politicians who helped should also be generously rewarded, it’s completely unclear where to get the missing money. The EU answers: to use frozen Russian assets
But, how? One option would be to transfer interest income from the frozen assets of the Russian CB to Ukraine. The second option: to impose a tax on windfall profits from depositors such as Euroclear, where the Russian money is located
The problem’s that "there may be a risk of undermining the legal and economic foundations on which the euro's international role is based," the ECB warns. Ukrainians with Polish residency used a Polish bank account and a Krakow-based accountant to rent a yacht from a Polish company and stopped in a Polish port 12 hours before they laid explosives that destroyed the Nord Streams, the WSJ says
Previously unseen corporate documents that suggest Ukrainians suspected of the attack used Germany’s eastern neighbor as a logistical and financial base. German investigators, who haven’t accused Poland’s govt or citizens of involvement, kept Polish colleagues in the dark about the details of their probe until a meeting in late May, said people familiar with the matter.
The probe could strain relations within NATO as the Biden administration is trying to corral a united front in supporting Ukraine. But in general, if everything is blamed on Ukrainians, as it actually is, and at the same time they are not invited to NATO, then it’s not all that bad for the Allies!
