Italian Govt Grows More Isolated

Italy is facing a migration crisis, w/ almost 10K people having landed on the southern Italian island of Lampedusa last week. However, Brussels condemns Italy for its efforts on directing migrants to other European countries while preferring to ignore policies of Poland and Hungary, which are literally building walls along the migration routes that threaten them

Late last week the country’s PM Giorgia Meloni visited Lampedusa w/ European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen and asked Brussels to do more to help. Von der Leyen promised a 10-point European Union action plan to ease the pressure, but the measures were similar to previous initiatives that have yet to have much effect. Moreover, in her last speech on the State of the Union, addressing the migrant chapter, von der Leyen didn’t mention Italy at all

Early this year Italian authorities detained and fined a German charity rescue ship shortly after parliament passed into law a govt decree establishing a code of conduct for migrant charity ships
