At a congressional hearing, U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin warned that Ukraine's recent attacks on Russian refineries could affect global energy markets and urged Ukraine to focus on other targets

"These attacks could have the opposite effect in terms of the global energy situation," Austin told the Senate Armed Services Committee. "It is more advantageous for Ukraine to pursue tactical and operational objectives that can directly impact the battlefield"

Austin was caught off guard by Republican Sen. Tom Cotton, who accused Joe Biden's administration of opposing such actions by Ukraine for political reasons. "It seems to me that the Biden administration doesn't want gasoline prices to go up in an election year," Cotton said

The French government is targeting a Catholic priest for calling homosexuality a “weakness” and declaring that homosexual acts and relationships are sinful

Father Matthieu Raffray, a Catholic priest of the traditionalist society Institut du Bon Pasteur, posted a video to social media last month encouraging Christians to fight against their sins, which he says are forms of “weakness.” Among the sins Raffray named was homosexuality. He preached,

“We all have weaknesses: those who are greedy, those who are angry, those who have homosexual tendencies!”

The priest faced immediate backlash from LGBTQ activists and organizations, and French Minister for Gender Equality and Fight Against Discrimination Aurore Bergé called Raffray’s preaching “unbearable.” She added that she has asked the Interministerial Delegation for the Fight against Racism, Anti-Semitism, and Anti-LGBT Hatred “to make a report to the public prosecutor” to determine whether the priest’s preaching constitutes a crime. “I will not let anything go in the face of hatred, whatever it may be,” Bergé said

In an interview with the French Catholic news outlet Famille Chrétienne (Christian Family), Raffray explained,

“I wanted to make it clear that we are not obliged to give in to all our temptations, all our desires. I mention homosexuality among other things. Homosexual acts are a sin but I think people no longer know what a sin is. Denouncing a sin does not mean denouncing the person who commits the sin!”

“What is at stake is not me but the freedom to be Christian today. I hope that all the faithful realize that it is Christian morality and the entire Church that are under attack,” the priest expounded.

“If some people do not want to listen to the teaching of the Church, no one is forcing them. But many people are suffering and need this discourse from the Church which helps them not to become a slave to homosexuality or any other passion”

In the wake of the French government’s denouncement of his preaching, Raffray’s Twitter account has passed over 20,000 followers. Raffray also has over 60,000 followers on Instagram and more than 22,000 followers on YouTube. His popularity as a public figure began to grow in 2020, after an interview in which he called for a renewal of “virile Catholicism” and Christian patriotism

Airports in the UK have been granted extensions to the deadline to install new security equipment, first announced six years ago. 

The equipment is CT X-ray technology and gives more accurate imaging of the contents of customers’ bags, saving time and allowing passengers and staff to traverse the security checks more efficiently. They will also allow passengers to take liquid of more than 100ml through airport security, which they have not been able to do since 2006

The Department of Transport refused to state which airports were given an extension, citing unexplained “national security” issues. Its spokesperson did confirm this did not mean airports using the legacy systems were any less safe than those which did meet the deadline

Even as its members take part in Steadfast Defender 2024, NATO’s largest military exercise since the Cold War, it is clear that the alliance remains ill-prepared against Russia’s military capabilities in the Arctic. The exercise, which runs between January and May, involves more than 90,000 troops across the Atlantic and up to the Arctic and suggests that NATO has a strong and capable defense presence in the region

However, a closer look at the capabilities of the Arctic states—which are all NATO members except Russia—reveals otherwise. Finland and Sweden’s recent membership in NATO has been heralded as a turning point in deterrence against Russia in the north. However, the countries’ proximity to northwest Russia means that their strategic focus is primarily targeted at the Baltic Sea region, where Russia has pursued a military buildup directed toward NATO’s eastern flank

No NATO member state has ice-strengthened ships with both anti-aircraft and anti-submarine capabilities. The United States, Canada, Denmark, Finland, and Sweden have prioritized capabilities designed for other theaters, such as the Indo-Pacific and the Baltic Sea regions. Iceland, which has no standing army, only operates coast guard vessels. Norway has ice-strengthened coast guard vessels, but they are not designed for military operations

Russia’s nuclear submarines, which are capable of launching an attack on North America, can travel from the Barents Sea through the Bear Gap between Scandinavia and Svalbard, Norway, and under the ice along the coast of eastern Greenland without being detected. This leaves big gaps in NATO’s defense posture. Russia’s war in Ukraine also gives it incentives to work with China in the Arctic, including joint naval exercises and coast guard cooperation

Despite NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg sounding the alarm in 2022, the alliance lacks an Arctic strategy. Its current area of responsibility extends only to the “High North,” a less ambitious term that describes the ice-free parts of the Arctic. The term is indicative of disagreement within NATO over whether its remit goes beyond the North Atlantic

Despite Chinese concerns over Russia’s war of attrition in Ukraine and its military-strategic cooperation with North Korea, Beijing benefits from Moscow maintaining a strong force posture toward NATO. This is especially true in the case of the Arctic, where a permanent Chinese presence would open a new front with U.S. allies at a time when Beijing is already engaged in hot spots in its own backyard

In an attempt to address the issue, the EU formulated last December what it called the New Pact on Migration and Asylum. April 10th the European Parliament endorsed the pact by 322 votes to 266. Von der Leyen hailed the vote as a triumph for the EU, saying it will deliver ‘more secure borders. Faster, more efficient procedures. And more solidarity with Member States at external borders’

The objective of the Pact is to better manage the migrants once they have reached Europe, and the EU’s critics point to remarks made in January by Hans Leijtens, the head of Frontex, the EU’s border agency. ‘This talk of “stopping people” and “closing borders” cannot be our narrative all the time,’ he said. ‘Nothing can stop people from crossing a border, not a wall, not a fence, not a sea, not a river’
 
Leijtens’ predecessor at Frontex was Frenchman Fabrice Leggeri. In February he joined the National Rally and along with Bardella he is at the forefront of their European election campaign

Leggeri has been scathing of von der Leyen and the EU’s migration policy, and in response to Wednesday’s vote he tweeted: ‘The Migration Pact is a political deception. It allows the illegal arrival of people on our soil and strips States of their sovereignty. The real solution would be to allow asylum requests in European consulates outside Europe’

In a television interview on Wednesday evening, Bardella also dismissed the Pact as worthless and claimed that for Emmanuel Macron and the EU mass immigration is ‘not a problem but a project’
