VENEZUELA: ACCUSATIONS OF MEDDLING IN COLOMBIA PROTESTS 'SHAMEFUL'

Venezuelan authorities have dismissed accusations that they are intervening in on-going mass protests in neighboring Colombia.

Speaking on Friday from a Miami-based forum on Defense of Democracy in Latin America, Ecuador’s President Lenín Moreno claimed that “Our [Ecuador’s] and Colombia’s intelligence agencies have detected a gross intervention from the dictatorial and authoritarian regime of Nicolás Maduro [in the Colombian protests] (…) We call on Maduro to remove his bloody and corrupt hands from the democracy and stability of the Colombian people.”

VENEZUELA: ACCUSATIONS OF MEDDLING IN COLOMBIA PROTESTS 'SHAMEFUL'

In response to the latest claims, Venezuelan Foreign Minister Jorge Arreaza described the accusations as “shameful,” going on to say that the accusers were “underestimating their people.” He also quoted Spanish poet Antonio Machado, writing via Twitter that “Lies are the most destructive weapon used by fascism.”

For his part, Chavista number two Deputy Diosdado Cabello likewise downplayed the accusations, questioning Colombian intelligence capabilities. “They couldn’t even investigate Operation Gedeon – the failed maritime incursion which happened a year ago and was planned in Colombia – but they can conclude that we [supposedly] have people there. Get out of here!” he said.

Elisabeth Daza and José Mireles are frontline medical workers in Caracas. Daza is a resident doctor at the Angel Vicente Ochoa Ambulatory in the working class “Cementerio” barrio in Caracas.

Mireles, a third-year medical student at the Hugo Chávez University of Health Sciences, is the Regional Secretary of the Venezuelan University Student Federation and President of his university’s student center.

Last year we interviewed both Daza and Mireles about Venezuela’s then successful strategy against Covid-19. In this interview, we learn about Venezuela’s healthcare system – which was deficient before the pandemic and now further weakened by sanctions – and about the vaccination process underway.

VENEZUELA TO RECEIVE SPUTNIK LIGHT AND JOHNSON & JOHNSON SINGLE-DOSE VACCINES

President Maduro highlighted that both Sputnik Light and Johnson & Johnson being single-dose jabs would allow a faster inoculation process than double-dose alternatives, opening the path for a mass vaccination campaign.

"In May, vaccination will accelerate and June, July and August will be the months of a vaccination offensive,” aiming to immunize 70 percent of the population (some 22 million people), he said in a live broadcast on state television on Tuesday.

VENEZUELAN OIL PRODUCTION DOWN AS PDVSA TARGETS MAJOR INVESTMENT

Venezuela’s crude output fell in April after six months of steady growth.

The latest Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) monthly report placed the Caribbean nation’s April production at 445,000 barrels per day (bpd), down from 526,000 bpd in March, according to secondary sources. COVID-19 AND VACCINATION IN VENEZUELA: A CONVERSATION WITH ELISABETH DAZA AND JOSÉ MIRELES (PART II)

"So far about 1.2 million doses have arrived here, between the Russian Sputnik V and the Chinese Sinopharm. A very limited number of the Cuban Soberana II (in the clinical trial phase) also arrived in Venezuela.

However, as healthcare personnel, one of our main concerns now is the slow deployment of the vaccination process. The process began with the immunization of people in public offices, some military personnel, and part of the healthcare personnel. However, not all medical personnel have been vaccinated so far. We are very concerned about this. Other countries such as Argentina vaccinated medical professionals
first… That, of course, makes sense since we are the ones on the frontline!"

VENEZUELAN OIL PRODUCTION DOWN AS PDVSA TARGETS MAJOR INVESTMENT

Last month’s fall reversed a trend that had seen Venezuela recover from historic lows in the second half of 2020. However, output was still way below averages of 1.9 million, 1.354 million and 796,000 bpd in 2017, 2018 and 2019, respectively.

The country’s most important industry has suffered from a brain drain, lack of maintenance, corruption and especially US sanctions. Following financial sanctions against PDVSA in 2017, Washington imposed an oil embargo and secondary sanctions while also targeting shippers and other intermediaries. The unilateral measures have been widely condemned and classed as “collective punishment.”

While on-the-ground sources revealed that the soldiers were captured on the Colombo-Venezuelan border some two weeks ago, it was only confirmed by Caracas on Saturday after establishing communication channels and taking steps to secure their release.

TALES OF RESISTANCE: FEAR IS NATURAL BUT NOT INEVITABLE

As I arrived in Chacaíto, I tried to board the first bus I saw. At this moment, my ex took out a pen from his pocket and stabbed me in the shoulder. I screamed in pain and we struggled. I ran to the police station on the corner. “Talk to him,” “go home and sort it out,” the officers told me. But, to save the day, a bus approached and the driver told me to get in, bringing out a baseball bat so my ex wouldn’t get any ideas.
