The corporation, which Hugo Chávez nationalized in 2008, is part of the larger Corporación Venezolana de Guayana [Venezuelan Corporation of Guayana, CVG], an industrial complex that includes a range of basic industries.
In this interview, we talk to Sidor worker César Soto about the challenges the company faces and the conditions of its workers. In addition to having worked at Sidor for almost 30 years, Soto is a union organizer, the coordinator of the “Libertad Sindical 10” [Trade Union Liberty 10] current, and a member of the “Unidad en la coincidencia” [Unity in Coming Together] workers movement.

Venezuela has re-imposed a national lockdown to control a “second wave” of the Covid-19 pandemic.
The lockdown will last for at least two weeks and will include Easter Week, a popular vacation period in the country. While the measure is in force, only priority businesses will be permitted to open, with inter-municipal movement limited and all public transport suspended. TWO VENEZUELAN SOLDIERS KILLED IN OPERATION ALONG BORDER WITH COLOMBIA
Two members of the National Bolivarian Armed Forces were killed Sunday in a confrontation with irregular armed groups in the southwestern Venezuelan state of Apure.
A communique from Defense Minister Vladimir Padrino López reported that Venezuelan authorities captured 32 men and killed an individual known by the alias “El Nando,” described as being one of the leaders of the Colombian group. Six camps were destroyed and a multitude of weapons, ammunition, explosives, military supplies, vehicles and drugs were also seized, according to the statement, which additionally mentioned an unspecified number of injured servicemen currently being treated.

Venezuelan state oil company PDVSA has slashed production at several projects in the wake of a pipeline explosion.
On March 20, a tract of the 36-inch natural gas pipeline that supplies the Pigap II reinjection plant in El Tejero, Monagas state, exploded and went up in flames, forcing the facilities to be shut down while nearby areas were evacuated. There were no reported injuries.
