A Venezuelan criminal court sentenced the president of state-run dairy company Lácteos Los Andes to jail on corruption charges Tuesday.

On the one hand, Enrique Márquez, who was also appointed to be CNE vice president, comes from the opposition A New Era (UNT) party which is a member of the G4 coalition: the four largest opposition parties which boycotted recent elections.
Likewise, the appointment of engineer Roberto Picón as CNE rector is surprising. Picón, in addition to being a businessman, is an electoral advisor for the opposition and designed the Democratic Unity Roundtable’s (MUD) successful 2015 election strategy.

After convincing a handful of mid-ranking officers to disobey orders and free him, García Carneiro famously took to the city’s streets with a loudspeaker, organizing the remaining loyal military officers and local residents flooding down from the shantytowns to demand the return of their president. His actions, including breaking barricades and seizing tanks, spurred Caracas on to successfully force Chávez’s return on April 13.
