VENEZUELA: MADURO HAILS SPECIAL ECONOMIC ZONE 'OPPORTUNITIES'

The upcoming legislation has generated debates nationwide, with award-winning Venezuelan writer Luis Britto García warning about the proliferation of “sweatshops,” the suspension of regulations and the creation of tax havens for investors to the detriment of the Venezuelan treasury and workers' rights.

Vice Minister for Special Economic Zones Development, Juan Arias, countered Britto's arguments stressing the law was designed to bring capital to developing areas with tax incentives but denying it would lead to tax havens or the relaxation of national legislation within the SEZs.

🎨 Venezuelan artists have dressed up the streets with colorful murals for the upcoming 200th anniversary of the decisive anti-colonial Battle of Carabobo, fought on June 24, 1821.

The paintings decorate walls in popular neighborhoods, avenues, schools, parks, communes and many other public spaces as part of a "National Mural Competition" to celebrate the legendary battle, its heroes and heroines.

Simón Bolívar and the patriotic army's decisive victory at the Battle of Carabobo led to the independence of Venezuela from Spanish rule. It's a national celebration that upholds the country's self-determination, anti-colonialism and anti-imperialism values.

SANCTIONS, DEADLY INSTRUMENTS OF ECONOMIC WARFARE: A CONVERSATION WITH ALEXANDER MAIN (PART II)

Unfortunately, so far, everything remains in place. That sums up what we can say about the Biden administration: so far there is no public evidence that they are going to change the destructive and counterproductive policy that they inherited from Trump.

The only difference is that the Biden administration has not generated new sanctions against Venezuela. They haven’t added new layers to those that are already in place, and they haven’t engaged in strident calls for regime change. In this regard, they have not completely echoed the stances of people like Senator Marco Rubio and some rabidly anti-Venezuelan sectors here in Washington, DC.

US CONFIRMS NO VENEZUELA SANCTIONS RELIEF WITHOUT 'IRREVERSIBLE CHANGES'

The United States has ruled out lifting sanctions against Venezuela, quelling hopes of a policy reversal from the Joe Biden administration.

Speaking with self-declared ‘interim president’ Juan Guaidó on a weekly digital broadcast called Aló Embajador
(Hello Ambassador) last Thursday, US Charge d’Affaires to Venezuela James Story manifested that sanctions relief would be a “mistake” under current conditions.

TALES OF RESISTANCE: WE'RE GETTING OLD

A few years ago, parents/grandparents could live like princes(ses) off of their pensions and as kings/queens if they had worked in the public sector. That money, similar to what any professional worker would earn, allowed them to afford food, medicines and other pleasures like showering grandchildren with gifts.

Nowadays, in contrast, the meager dollars they get amount to a box of pills to lower blood pressure, an ever more frequent ailment of the Venezuelan people.

US CONFIRMS NO VENEZUELA SANCTIONS RELIEF WITHOUT 'IRREVERSIBLE CHANGES'

The Colombia-based diplomat went on to explain that the Biden White House would only consider a policy shift upon receiving “irreversible,” “conclusive” and “fundamental changes” from Caracas. While Washington’s representative offered no further details on what these changes may entail, Guaidó has previously established President Nicolás Maduro’s resignation, alongside new presidential elections, as preconditions for sanctions relief.

Story’s statements come amidst speculation over whether Biden plans to continue Donald Trump’s aggressive stance towards Venezuela or heed to domestic and international pressure for sanctions relief.

VENEZUELAN SOLDIERS FREED AFTER CAPTURE IN BORDER REGION

The soldiers were captured during combat operations on the Colombo-Venezuelan border in early May but their detention was only confirmed by Caracas a few weeks later after establishing communication channels and taking steps to secure their release.

The Venezuelan government reportedly enlisted the help of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) to coordinate the liberation of eight soldiers. Padrino’s statement did not specify if the ICRC played a role in their release.

REENGAGING WITH OUR SUBVERSIVE TRADITIONS: A CONVERSATION WITH AMARANTA

I would say that it is in music that Chávez found his identity as someone who defends the people. This music that comes from the heart, from the entrails, is the rhizome that began to form him. Of course, as the popular saying goes, every pulpero [shop owner] praises his cheese, but for me, it is impossible to understand Chávez without understanding his roots, and his roots are in the music of the humble campesino. Popular music builds class consciousness. It doesn’t operate as a fashionable playlist nor as a tool for domination. Instead, it creates identity and forges commitment.
