THE COMMUNARD UNION, CHÁVEZ's IDEAS IN ACTION: A CONVERSATION WITH JUAN LENZO
Inspired by Chávez’s ideas, the Communard Union was born as a space to link up communal efforts in a large national organization that would allow us to break with mere localism, overcoming the isolation of the different Venezuelan grassroots projects. In this way, the Communard Union seeks to create an integrated project with a nationwide vision and with a plan to transform the country.
Currently, more than twenty projects from different regions are being integrated into the Communard Union. This is being done by the Argelia Laya Brigade, which promotes the connections in organization, exchange, production, communication, and integral defense of the territories.

Born on February 6, 1929, Fabricio Ojeda grew up in the small rural town of Bocono, Trujillo State. At just 17, he joined the Democratic Republic Union (URD), a grassroots political force engaged in social justice.
Ojeda became a journalist and used his role as a reporter in the Miraflores Presidential Palace to help overthrow Venezuela's last known dictator Marcos Perez Jiménez (1952-1958). He was president of the Patriotic Junta, the civic-military coalition that organized the plot.
However, the popular victory was co-opted by US-backed members of the coalition, which resulted in the ‘Pact of PuntoFijo,’ signed on October 31, 1958. This was followed by four decades of bi-partisan power in favor of the country’s political elites.
Rejecting the new US-backed government, Fabricio Ojeda resigned from Congress on June 30, 1962, and founded a guerrilla movement, the Armed Forces for National Liberation (FALN). His resignation letter remains a source of inspiration for people's struggles today.
The popular leader was captured on June 21, 1966, and, four days later, he was found dead in a prison cell with signs of torture. Authorities alleged a suicide.
Former President Hugo Chávez admired Ojeda's struggles for social justice and opened an investigation of his death.
In January 2017, Ojeda's remains were taken to the National Pantheon in Caracas, and he was bestowed with Venezuelan Liberators' Order First Class.

VENEZUELA BLASTS 'US-SCRIPTED' INTERNATIONAL MIGRATION DONOR CONFERENCE AS 'MEDIA FARCE'
Last Friday, the UNHCR released its annual Global Report in which Venezuelan migration was a key element. According to UN 2020 data, Venezuelan migration has remained steady at roughly 5.4 million, of which 85% live in Latin America.
Out of the total, 171,000 are considered refugees, 851,000 asylum seekers, 2.5 million have legal residencies and 3.85 million are “displaced persons.” In contrast to refugees, the UN defines displaced persons as those “who are likely to be in need of international protection under the criteria contained in the Cartagena Declaration, but who have not applied for asylum.”
The report goes on to indicate that while 130,000 migrants returned to Venezuela in 2020, the total number of “displaced persons” has risen 300,000 from 2019.

A COUNTERHEGEMONIC APPROACH TO HUMAN RIGHTS: A CONVERSATION WITH ANTONIO GONZÁLEZ PLESSMANN
The unilateral coercive measures pushed forth by the US and the European Union are antithetical (in a structural sense) to the defense of human rights. Their impact on the population is devastating and criminal, and they are aimed at triggering a change of government in Venezuela. Thus the sanctions violate Venezuela’s right to self-determination.
Despite many internal contradictions and tensions, Venezuela was attempting to build a democratic society as an alternative to capitalism – and to do so from a Latinamericanist perspective. That is to say, with independence from the United States. This is something that imperialism had to punish: what is happening today cannot be understood apart from that earlier conflict.
