VENEZUELAN OIL OUTPUT CONTINUES SLOW RECOVERY AS WASHINGTON APPROVES LPG IMPORTS

the LPG license is unlikely to allow Caracas to tackle its cooking fuel shortages. The document states that Caracas remains barred from paying in kind with petroleum or petroleum products (swap deals) or through other sanctioned people and companies. With PDVSA and the Venezuelan government shut out of financial markets it remains unclear whether they will be able to effectively import LPG.

CHÁVEZ THE RADICAL XXVI: 'WHAT ARE PRIVATIZATIONS?'

Chavismo emerged in Venezuela as an alternative project when neoliberalism and the Washington consensus had taken hold of Latin America.

In this edition of Chávez the Radical, former President Hugo Chávez recalls how the governments of the 1980s and 1990s were following the IMF playbook, especially in terms of the privatization of state assets.

As the Maduro government, under the weight of a severe crisis and US sanctions, turns rightward in its economic policy, Chávez's warning echoes: "It would be horrifying to see another neoliberal package in Venezuela."

VENEZUELA VOICES SOLIDARITY WITH CUBA AGAINST 'IMPERIALIST ONSLAUGHT,' MEDIA MANIPULATION

Cooperation between Cuba and Venezuela remains strong, with Caracas supplying 35,000 barrels of oil a day (bpd) to its ally, down from previous highs around 90,000 bpd. Venezuela, which is also subject to an “illegal” and “devastating” US blockade, is coordinating to produce Cuba’s Soberana 02 and Adbala vaccines locally and was the first country to start using the latter. In February, Venezuela backed Cuba’s Henry Reeve International Medical Brigade for the Nobel Peace Prize.

Following the recent attacks against Havana, a number of activities have been organized in Venezuela in solidarity with Cuba, including a salsa concert “Against the Blockades of Venezuela and Cuba” next Monday in Caracas.

IN THE SHADOW OF THE BLOCKADE: STORIES OF RESISTANCE FROM EL MAIZAL COMMUNE (PART I)

El Maizal Commune lies in the fertile lands between the Lara and Portuguesa states in western Venezuela. Founded in 2009, this rural commune has since become an important political and economic force in both the region and the country. It not only produces huge amounts of corn every year, but also raises cattle and pigs, along with a growing number of additional side enterprises. Most importantly, El Maizal Commune forges new social relations and new human beings: people committed to the socialist project that Chávez promoted during his lifetime.

In the first of this three-part series, we listen to El Maizal’s communards explain the principal effects of the sanctions and the ways in which this flagship organization works to maintain Chávez’s communal path towards socialism.

UN EXPERTS WARN HUNDREDS OF VENEZUELAN CANCER PATIENTS LIVES' ENDANGERED BY US SANCTIONS

“Third countries, groups of countries, banks and private companies have been overly cautious in dealings with Venezuela because they fear unintentionally violating US sanctions,” the document reads. It is signed by UN special rapporteurs Alena Douhan, Nils Melzer, Saad Alfarargi, Tlaleng Mofokeng, Obiora Okafor and Livingstone Sewanyana. Douhan visited Venezuela from February 1-12 and described the “devastating” consequences of US unilateral measures in a preliminary report.

The independent experts urged the US government, other countries and entities to “mitigate the unexpected consequences of sanctions, and reinstate treatment for people whose lives now are in danger.”

IN THE SHADOW OF THE BLOCKADE: STORIES OF RESISTANCE FROM EL MAIZAL COMMUNE (PART I)

The sanctions have severely affected the commune’s production and also the life of the pueblo. Imperialism finished off Iraq and Libya, and they are trying to do the same with us. Sanctions amount to a declaration of war.

In desperation, some people here gave up the struggle. Some went to work in the private sector, while others sold all they had and simply left the country. The crisis and the sanctions were a harsh blow, which struck deeply into people’s subjectivity, into their very spirit.

CHÁVEZ THE RADICAL XXVII:
'BEWARE OF A BOLIVARIAN OLIGARCHY'

Always a great communicator, former President Hugo Chávez would often use his televised broadcasts and speeches to debate political theory and key concepts.

In this episode of Chávez the Radical, Chávez warns against the emergence of a "Bolivarian oligarchy" amidst revolutionary ranks, highlighting time and again that a socialist revolution is driven by class struggle.

The recent government actions, giving greater protagonism to the bourgeoisie both in discourse and policy, have generated fierce debates within Chavismo. Is it a necessary step back given the economic struggles and murderous US sanctions? Or is Chávez's project being blurred?

“Don’t be so cynical [Duque]. You are at the head of a narco government that exports drugs and violence. A factory of terrorists in power that has eliminated the option of internal peace and sends mercenaries to generate violence and assassinate Presidents in the region,” wrote Arreaza on Twitter.

Nonetheless both countries’ foreign ministers met in Mexico City last Saturday to take part in a summit of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC), though no bi-lateral meetings between Colombia and Venezuela were reported.

Ahead of the summit, Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador called for the Organization of American States (OAS) to be cast aside and be replaced with a new regional body, closer to the form of the European Union. López Obrador added that it should be “a truly autonomous body, not anyone’s lackey, but a mediator at the request and acceptance of the parties to conflicts in matters of human rights and democracy.”
