Venezuelans will head to the polls on November 21 for regional and local “mega-elections.” This election, the 27th since Chávez came to power, marks the first time since 2015 that Chavismo will face most of the opposition. In the latest episode of our podcast, we take stock of the political landscape ahead of these pivotal contests.
Host José Luis Granados Ceja talks to fellow VA writer Paul Dobson about the different political forces vying in these elections and some of the main issues at play in the campaign. Likewise featured is Venezuelan writer and theorist Reinaldo Iturriza, who analyzes the “disaffiliation” that has taken over politics and how Chavismo can revitalize its grassroots.

VENEZUELA: 'MEGA-ELECTION' CAMPAIGN WRAPS UP WITH LARGE RALLIES ACROSS THE COUNTRY
Candidates across the political spectrum received ample airtime on public and private media to promote their electoral proposals, centered on recovering the country’s public services, significantly strained after a years-long economic crisis and under crushing US sanctions.
Sunday's ballot, the twenty-seventh since 1998, will see the election of 3,082 public officers, including 23 state governors, 335 mayors, 253 regional legislators and 2,471 local councilors.
The ruling Socialist Party (PSUV)+ bloc set in motion its electoral machinery in all 23 states. For the final campaign event, the incumbent Miranda state governor Héctor Rodríguez gathered hundreds of supporters in the populous Petare barrio in eastern Caracas.

Caracas mayor
Amazonas state governor
Anzóategui state governor
Apure state governor
Aragua state governor
Barinas state governor
Bolívar state governor
Carabobo state governor
Delta Amacuro state governor
Falcón state governor
Gúarico state governor
Lara state governor
La Guaira state governor
Mérida state governor
Miranda state governor
Monagas state governor
Portuguesa state governor
Sucre state governor
Táchira state governor
Trujillo state governor
Yaracuy state governor
Hard right opposition is leading in following 3 races:
Cojedes state governor (MUD)
Nueva Esparta state governor (Neighborhood Force)

DOMINANT PSUV SWEEPS VENEZUELA'S 'MEGA-ELECTIONS'
The United Socialist Party (PSUV) landed a comprehensive victory in Venezuela’s regional and local on Sunday, winning 83% of the governorships.
The ruling party secured at least 19 of the 23 governorships, as well as the important Caracas mayoralty according to initial results from the National Electoral Council (CNE) on Sunday night. The PSUV also successfully overturned rightwing incumbents in Mérida, Táchira and Anzoátegui states and held off fierce challenges in a number of others, including Miranda, Carabobo, Bolívar and Apure.
