DOMINANT PSUV SWEEPS VENEZUELA'S 'MEGA-ELECTIONS'
In Zulia, the country’s most populous state, the MUD scored a strong win in the race for governor, with former governor and 2006 presidential candidate Manuel Rosales defeating incumbent PSUV governor Omar Prieto by 57 to 37%. Following his victory, Rosales, who is already being projected as a potential 2024 presidential candidate, took to Twitter telling supporters that “hope had won” in the oil-rich region. The opposition alliance also won the mayoral race in the Zulia state capital of Maracaibo. The hardline sectors likewise scored a surprise and inaugural victory in the rural and traditional government stronghold state of Cojedes.
For its part, the more moderate right Democratic Alliance landed just one victory after backing Morel Rodríguez of the recently formed Neighborhood Force. He beat the PSUV’s Dante Rivas by 43 to 39% in Nueva Esparta state.

VENEZUELA REJECTS US AND CANADIAN EFFORTS TO DISCREDIT ELECTIONS
Venezuela dismissed declarations issued by both the US and Canadian governments that attempted to discredit the country’s recent regional elections that saw a dominant United Socialist Party (PSUV) win at least 19 of 23 governorships.
“It is the height of cynicism that a country where there is an indirect democracy, with second-degree elections and that has declared a brutal economic war against Venezuela, [...] purports to have the morals to question the elections alleging lack of freedoms or other conditions.” read a statement by the Venezuelan Foreign Ministry. It added that “US imperialism and its allies were the big losers” in the process.

VENEZUELA REJECTS US AND CANADIAN EFFORTS TO DISCREDIT ELECTIONS
The Venezuelan process was accompanied by international groups such as National Lawyers Guild (NLG) whose members said they “observed a balanced and transparent voting process” and rejected the Washington’s characterization of the vote.
“The US’s consistently false narrative of elections in Venezuela is formulated to legitimize the continuation of U.S. sanctions, which are violations of international law and amount to economic warfare,” said Suzanne Adely, NLG President and member of the delegation, on Wednesday.

Venezuela recently held "mega-elections" to elect governors, mayors, regional legislators and local councilors. The US-backed hardline opposition returned to the ballot after years of boycotts, but its results were underwhelming. Chavista forces secured huge majorities, winning 19 of 23 governorships and 212 of 335 mayoralties.
In this infographic, designed by Kael Abello, we break down the electoral results and put them in perspective compared to past contests. We also examine the current political landscape and look ahead to future races.

MUSIC BRINGS DOWN WALLS: A CONVERSATION WITH SANDINO PRIMERA
In Venezuela today, there are no record labels producing albums with the kind of content that we produce. In fact, there are practically no record labels! That forces us to look for ways to produce and finance the whole process – from pre-production, recording, and editing to live concerts and music videos (which are very important nowadays).
We have had to learn a great deal, from technical sound production and instrumental execution, video, and photography, to sound and visual effects, and so on.
These are difficult times for those of us who don’t conform to the precepts of the music industry, but I have enjoyed the support of many friends, institutions, private initiatives with social responsibility. All that is very important, but it is also ephemeral... That's why we constantly struggle for economic independence.

[UPDATED] VENEZUELA'S MADURO REACHES OUT TO ELECTED OPPOSITION LEADERS, CALLS FOR UNITY
EU observers are currently centered in Venezuela’s Barinas state, where CNE authorities are under pressure after the Supreme Court (TSJ) ordered the ballot be held again.
According to the ruling on Monday, last Sunday’s results, which the TSJ claims narrowly favored MUD politician Freddy Superlano, are to be annulled and the vote is to be repeated on January 9, 2022. The ruling follows an earlier one suspending a planned CNE recount, and also stipulates that Superlano was ruled ineligible to hold public office by the comptroller's office on August 17. According to the TSJ, the decision was based on a 2013 ruling, but no further details were offered by either the Supreme Court or comptroller. Electoral authorities had previously established a timeline to review candidates’ eligibility to run which expired in September.
