From a very young age, and growing up in a rural environment, Gabaldón became close to campesinos, listening to their stories and struggles. This camaraderie would help him understand the reality of the country’s deep social inequality and oppression, first under cruel military dictatorships and later at the hands of US-backed right-wing governments (1958-1998).
“The lessons from workers and friends prevailed in ‘Chimiro’ [childhood nickname] over the lessons from books. He preferred the knowledge of the people,” reads the biographical book An encounter with Argimiro Gabaldón, Commander Carache by the Cuba-Venezuela Solidarity Committee.

The ALBA Summit went on to take aim at US intervention in the region, blasting the “genocidal” blockade against Cuba and the “massive, flagrant and systematic violation of human rights” through unilateral coercive measures against a number of the alliance’s members.
“Not even a thousand sanctions will defeat the dignity of the Venezuelan, Nicaraguan and Cuban people,” said Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel at the meeting.
From Cuba, ALBA Executive Secretary Sacha Llorenti unveiled a Counter-Intervention Observatory which will reportedly look to “periodically analyze the role of non-governmental organizations and funding in destabilizing efforts,” as well as study how the “neoliberal coercive measures” are being levied against member nations.

Venezuela has steadily grown its oil production to end the year while strengthening alliances with Iran looking ahead to 2022.
The Caribbean country pumped 625,000 barrels per day (bpd) in November, 15,000 bpd up from October, as measured by secondary sources in the latest Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) report. For its part, state oil company PDVSA registered a much higher 824,000 bpd figure, a 68,000 bpd rise from the previous month. The Venezuelan government had set a one million bpd target for the end of the year.

The United Kingdom’s highest court issued a ruling on Monday favoring opposition figure Juan Guaidó and his efforts to wrest control of US$1.7 billion worth of Venezuelan gold stored at the Bank of England (BoE).
The Monday decision is the latest episode in the legal struggle by the democratically-elected Nicolás Maduro government to regain access to the reserves. Following what the court described as the “one voice principle”, the court ruled that under the UK’s constitutional arrangements political recognition of foreign states falls to the country’s executive.

According to documents seen by Reuters, the growing oil revenues will fund 61 percent of the country’s 2022 budget. However, no government official has specified financial sources for next year’s plan.
On December 14, Venezuela’s National Assembly (AN) approved the 2022 budget for a total amount of 62 billion bolívares (around US $13 billion), some 60 percent higher than the 2021 equivalent. During the annual plan presentation, Vice President Delcy Rodríguez explained that 77 percent of resources will be allocated for social programs.
