Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro warned that Colombian President Iván Duque was behind a plot to sow unrest on their shared border through the targeted killing of Venezuelan security forces.
“The enemies of our homeland are constantly conspiring (...) I call on all ministers, governors and mayors to be alert to neutralize and defeat the violent plans that come from the Colombian narco-government," said Maduro.
“Anti-chavismo” has long been a key component of right-wing politics in Colombia and the bilateral relationship has been a frequent topic in the ongoing presidential race.

Venezuelan activists rallied to demand freedom for five youths reportedly detained unjustly during anti-gang operations last year.
“We [still] don't know what is the evidence held against them, authorities refuse to meet with us and inform us about the process. They are being pressured to admit crimes they did not commit," reads a communique presented in the rally held on Tuesday in front of Caracas' Justice Palace.
The activists demanded that the Venezuelan government change the “inhuman conditions” in the country’s prisons, revolutionize the judicial system to advance human rights and “stop the criminalization of poverty in popular neighborhoods.”
