The single greatest dietary change we can make to improve our health is to completely cut out sugar. You can still eat sweet, just avoid chemical sweeteners and cane sugar and that cactus sweetener. Sweeten with stevia, or even better, fruit (juice). I have been without sugar for about twelve years and in that time, I only got a cold/flu once, when I went through a difficult time while moving. My asthmas went away completely. And, my emotions were a lot more stable. Sometimes, I would find myself feeling weepy, and then I realized that there must have been sugar in the food I ate at a restaurant earlier that day. Always true!

There is a wonderful little book called Suagr Blues by William Dufty. If you read it, you will have excellent reasons to quit sugar for good. Here is the best one:

Historically, when two countries were at war, the country that had sugar always lost. It's like kryptonite that way. It makes us weak. Case in point: When Americans were fighting with South Vietnam against the communist North Vietnamese, they had access to soda, gum, candy bars, and drugs. The Viet Cong had handfuls of rice. And they won.

This book has bene translated into dozens of languages and is available online in PDF form. My parents read it in Hungarian and it helped them move away from sugar in their retirement. If seniors can do this, so can we.
