Views related to the Imamate among the companions of the Imams (peace be upon them); a rereading of the book Maqālāt al-Islāmiyyīn.

The background to the formation of Imami Shiʿism in the 2nd Islamic century; the discussion of “ḥujjah,” knowledge, and the infallibility of the Imam.

🔸Lec03:
Sources of the Imam’s knowledge; the relationship between the Imam’s infallibility and the issue of religious authority and the Imam’s knowledge.

🔸Lec04:
Muʿtazilite views in the 2nd century regarding the “righteous scholars”; what was the meaning and core substance of speculative theology (ʿilm al-kalām)? Why should the issue of ghulūw (extremism) not be confused with theoretical foundations in monotheistic theology?

🔸Lec05:
Has the Imami school undergone an intellectual transformation in its most important and central doctrinal foundation—namely, the Imamate—since the 2nd Islamic century? The Imamate and the finality of prophethood.

🔸Lec06:
The importance of the Imam’s knowledge among Shiʿi sects in the 2nd century and the sources of the Imam’s knowledge from the perspective of early Shiʿites; the Imamate of Imam Muhammad b. ʿAli al-Jawād (peace be upon him) and Shiʿi disagreements over the Imam’s knowledge during childhood.

Discussion and examination of the theory of Yunus b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān and those who considered the Imam’s own legal reasoning (ijtihād) in the Sharia as among the sources of the Imam’s knowledge.

An examination of the sources of the Imam’s knowledge from the perspective of early Shiʿites based on the book Baṣāʾir al-Darajāt, and Shiʿi beliefs at the end of the 3rd Islamic century regarding different types of the Imam’s knowledge.

Disagreements within Imami Shiʿism in mid-3rd-century Khurasan regarding the Imam’s knowledge and its sources, factionalism, and disputes over the doctrines of Faḍl b. Shādhān.

🔸Lec10:
How, in the 2nd century, the “scholars” came to be regarded as the primary heirs of the Prophet in opposition to the caliphs.

The views of Ibn Qibah al-Rāzī, the prominent Imami theologian of the late 3rd Islamic century, on knowledge, designation (naṣṣ), and infallibility.

The views of Ibn Qibah al-Rāzī as a theologian of the period of the Minor Occultation, compared with the views of hadith scholars such as the author of Baṣāʾir al-Darajāt regarding the Imam’s knowledge.

The theological views of Ibn Qibah al-Rāzī, a late-3rd-century theologian, concerning the Imamate, the status of the Imam’s knowledge, infallibility, and designation (naṣṣ).

Continuation of the narrations from Baṣāʾir al-Darajāt and several other contemporary texts by Imami scholars of Baghdad and Qom at the end of the 3rd Islamic century concerning the status of the Imam and his knowledge, including the views of Abū Sahl al-Nawbakhtī.

🔸Lec15:
The sources, scope, and extent of the Imam’s knowledge from the Imami perspective in the 3rd Islamic century; concluding session of the rereading of Baṣāʾir.

🔸Lec16:
Moderate and extremist views during the Buyid period based on the works of Shaykh Ṣadūq and Shaykh Mufīd; various relevant sections of Shaykh Mufīd’s Awāʾil al-Maqālāt.

🔸Lec17:
Continuation of the examination of moderate and extremist views during the Buyid period based on the works of Shaykh Ṣadūq and Shaykh Mufīd; relevant sections of al-Iʿtiqādāt by Shaykh Ṣadūq, Awāʾil al-Maqālāt and Taṣḥīḥ al-Iʿtiqādāt by Shaykh Mufīd, as well as al-Dhakhīrah by Sharif al-Murtaḍā.

🔸Lec18:
Discussion of the issue of the Prophet’s forgetfulness (sahw al-nabī); also an examination of two texts from works on the doctrines and intellectual and theological foundations of the ghulāt (extremists).

🔸Lec19:
Continuation of the discussion introducing the ideas of the ghulāt and examination of sections from the work Maqālāt by Saʿd al-Ashʿarī.

🔸Lec20:
A general analysis of the relationship between moderate Shiʿism and ghulūw; a renewed look at the topic of the “righteous scholars.”
