Abstract:
This special topic session focuses mainly on verse 5 of Sūrat Ṭā Hā — الرَّحْمَٰنُ عَلَى الْعَرْشِ اسْتَوَىٰ — examining it within the broader context of the Qur’an and the eight opening verses of the sūrah. It closely analyzes the key Qur’anic terms al-Raḥmān, al-ʿArsh, and al-istiwāʾ, exploring their linguistic meanings and theological implications. The discussion highlights how divine mercy and authority are articulated through these expressions and how they have been understood by classical Qur’anic exegetes.

speaker, Dr. Farhad Ghoddoussi

Topic: Meaning of Hikmah (Wisdom) in the Story of Luqman (Q31:12–19)

Summary:
In the ninth lecture, we discussed the meaning of *hikmah* in verse Q31:12 of the surah Luqman as part of the pericope Q31:12-19, which is about the hikmah (wisdom) given by God to Luqman and who conveys this wisdom to his son.

Surah 31 Luqmān is believed to have been revealed during the Makkan period .The focus of this sūrah is upon worship, obedience, and gratitude. There is an extensive debate regarding the identity of Luqman, but most commentators maintain that he was simply a righteous man or a sage (ḥakīm) and probably a person with authority.

In the verse Q31:12 being thankful to God and knowing giving thanks to God is for the benefit of those who give thanks and God is in no need of their thanking is listed as an instance of hikmah given to Luqman. But what comes in the following verses also are considered as instances of Hikmah. TN this pericope and the pericope of Q17:22-39 we have instances and examples of wisdom explicitly listed which makes this two pericope among the most important one for understanding of the meaning of hikmah in the Qur'an.

Qur’an often discusses the theme of filial obligation together with that of monotheism. In this pericope doctrine of monotheism is stated by Luqman (verse 13), but the subject of filial obligation is addressed by God Himself (verses 14-15). This change of speakers from verse 13 to verses 14-15 tells us something about Luqman. Since he is counseling his own son, Luqman, out of modesty and humility, omits to instruct his son to honor his parents since Luqman himself would be the claimant and recipient of such honor. The omission is supplied by God Himself, and this explains the change of speakers. The joining of the Divine voice to Luqman’s is meant to honor Luqman. From verse 16 onward, Luqman again becomes the speaker, with verses 14-15, thus, constituting a kind of parenthetic addition but being integral to the theme of the passage.

The Qur’an’s purpose in narrating Luqman's advice to his son advice maybe is to show that the wise men of Arabia taught the same essential message that prophet Muhammad was teaching. In other words, human reason leads one to the same broad and general truths to which Divine revelation leads.

Thus the content of this pericope from the sūrah Luqmān presents a strong confirmation that ḥikmah refers to the Qur’an’s core theological claims of divine unicity and final accountability alongside natural moral beliefs deducible prior to revelation. In the larger Qur’anic perspective, then, Arabia’s wisdom tradition, represented by Luqman, complements Arabia’s revelatory tradition, represented by prophet Abraham at an earlier period and by prophet Muhammad at a later time.

🔻Lecture Series, 2 Sessions, in English
"The Qur'anic Portrait of Lady Fatima al-Zahra (a)"
Speaker, H. I. Hasan Doagoo
December 14 and 21, 2025

Summary:
This lecture series examines Shi’i exegetical perspectives on Qur’anic verses associated with Lady Fatimah al-Zahra (a) and her immediate family, the Ahl al-Bayt. While acknowledging that these interpretations are often contested in Sunni scholarship, the series presents a distinctively Shi’i narrative. The approach is primarily exegetical (tafsiri) rather than polemical, drawing heavily on the analysis found in Allamah Tabatabaei’s Tafsir al-Mizan.

The first lecture analyzes the Verse of Mubahala. It demonstrates how Shi’i scholars utilize the hadith corpus of both schools to establish that the verse refers exclusively to the Prophet, Imam Ali, Lady Fatimah, Imam Hasan, and Imam Husayn. Drawing on Tabatabaei’s commentary, the lecture elucidates the unique spiritual status implied by the Prophet's selection of this specific group—a distinction recognized by his companions. The session concludes with a preliminary introduction to the Verse of Purification (Ayat al-Tatheer).

The second lecture provides an in-depth examination of the Verse of Purification, positing it as central to the Shi’i definition of the Ahl al-Bayt’s role and attributes within a Qur’anic framework. The discussion surveys traditions regarding the Occasion of Revelation (Asbab al-Nuzul) and addresses the debate surrounding the definition of "Ahl al-Bayt." Furthermore, it offers a Shi’i justification for the verse’s placement amidst passages addressing the wives of the Prophet, before finally analyzing the theological implications of "purification" (tatheer) as presented in the text.

🔻"Hikmah in the Qur'an", Lec10
speaker, Dr. Farhad Ghoddoussi
Dec 14, 2025

Topic: Meaning of Hikmah (Wisdom) in relation to the Golden Rule (Q2:269)

Summary:
In the tenth lecture, we discussed the meaning of *hikmah* in verse Q2:269 of Surah al-Baqarah: "He grants wisdom to whomever He wishes, and whoever is given wisdom is certainly given abundant good, and none takes admonition except those who possess intellect." (Q2:269)

To understand the meaning of hikmah in this verse, as in previous cases, we must examine its context within the surah. This verse effectively serves as the culminating verse of the pericope Q2:261-269, which lays down what may be called the ethic of giving. Its more immediate context is found in the two preceding verses, Q2:267-268, which state: "O you who have faith! Spend of the good things you have earned [through trade and the like] and of what We bring forth for you from the earth, and do not be of the mind to give the bad part of it, for you yourselves would not take it unless you overlook [its quality]. And know that Allah is all-sufficient, all-laudable. (Q2:267) Satan frightens you of poverty and prompts you to [commit] indecent acts. But Allah promises you His forgiveness and bounty, and Allah is all-bounteous, all-knowing. (Q2:268)."

The statement made in the first half of verse Q2:269—"He [God] gives wisdom to whomever He wishes; and whoever is given wisdom is given a great good"—when read independently, has a proverbial force. In the particular context of this passage, however, it carries a specific meaning: those who spend their wealth in the way of God with the goal of pleasing Him are the ones who possess (or are given) wisdom. "He gives wisdom to whomever He wishes" means that God, since His will is not divorced from His wisdom, confers wisdom on those who, through spending their wealth in His way, prove their worthiness to receive that wisdom. Not everyone is able to grasp this insight: only those possessed of deep understanding have the courage to forgo the material gain of this world for the reward of the afterlife.

Verse Q2:267 is an instance of the Golden Rule in ethics—that is, "to do unto others what you would have them do unto you" (or, phrased negatively, not to do to others what you would not want them to do to you). Q83:1-3 is another instance of the universal ethical principle of the Golden Rule (Principle of Reciprocity) regarding how to treat others, in the Qur'an. Similarly, verses Q17:29-30, which were discussed in Lecture 8, exemplify the Golden Mean (Principle of Moderation), which states that virtue lies in the middle ground between two extremes—neither excess nor deficiency. Thus, hikmah(wisdom) in the Qur'an includes acting according to the two universal ethical principles of reciprocity and moderation.

🔻Lecture Series, 10 Sessions, in English
"Hikmah in the Qur’an"
Speaker, Dr. Farhad Ghoddoussi
September 28 - December 14, 2025

Summary:
▪️The Qur'an depicts humans as capable of aspiring to share with God certain attributes such as mercy and wisdom (hikmah).

▪️Qur'anic wisdom is not esoteric gnosis reserved for a select few but rather involves an emphasis on discursive outreach.

▪️According to the Qur'an, the "natural" (i.e., non-revelatory) rational faculties of humans are deemed capable of arriving at least at some of the hallmarks of Qur'anic revelatory beliefs and ethical commands (natural morality).

▪️However, it would be less appropriate to qualify the Qur'anic understanding of natural reason as "unaided." If a human, like Luqman, is truly wise, this must be reckoned as a divine gift, even if the wisdom in question was not transmitted via revelation (Q31:12).

▪️From the Qur'anic vantage point, genuine worldly wisdom is not in tension with divine wisdom (the content of revelation) but expressive of it.
